For one week they should do a free to play event aka FFXI Trial (which includes a FFXIV Client download.) i think it will draw more people in who are curious but don't want to shell out $60. If they decide to play they will have to pay $60 (or what ever the games cost is) too keep their Registration code going after the trial.

I don't see a problem is this. You might say CGFs CGFs. But since its only a week and not something thats 30day free trial thats on the website 24/7 it wont do much harm.

What are your thoughts.

Secondly, no bad idea!
The game is far from a state where you'd want to offer people a 7/14 day trial with a free downloadable package.
Let them first get this game in shape, when the player population is growing again and the game is recieving positive media attention then is the time to consider the above idea.

Right now my true thoughts as one that bought retail:
If they would start with that now I would buy a ticket for the next plane to Narita airport, a train ticket to Shinjuku, take the New Minami exit, stroll towards the SE HQ take the elevator to the 12th floor, pass the reception and and shove the FFXIV box with its entire contents through Wada's throat.

that, the open beta hit FFXIV hard enough

yes they should do the trail thing, but NOT in the state it is in now
