I don't think many are surprised by the nature of these exchanges, but rather that they came to light in the first place and we finally get to see some of the transparency we were promised. It's less shock, and more of a refreshing surprise, like a splash of cold water to the face after you've been wandering the desert without food and water for days. Rather than staring at some immutable bulwark that defies our attempts to trust and understand, we now get to see a little glimpse inside.

And with the Whistle Blower Bill, the U.S. government has again shown it is completely incapable of understanding the sentiment of its own citizens. If you can't trust the government because of corruption and deceit, you can't trust another government organization that promises to do away with it. A government cannot regulate itself without leading to ever more heinous, compounding corruption--a government must be regulated by the society it governs, and to do that requires information, lest we all become crazed tea partiers spouting off nonsense because we don't have enough hard data to come to a rational conclusion.

We're not here to discuss your goddamn feelings. Facebook and Twitter are that way. --->

LOL i hate you feng. I also am so tired of their fucking shit. They believe they are above us and have literally horse fucked our constitution and bill of rights with petty laws to the point they believe there are no rights for the citizens. I bought a place in asia and im moving out of this fucked up place. I love what my country was founded upon but this shit going on its beyond any comprehension. Our founding fathers would literally roll over in their graves if possible with how these fucks have done.

The way the goverment is run in Asia is not perfect but I dont' feel like im wiretapped every god damn day or spied upon like they are doing in the US because you don't agree with them (Philippines).

I am in Angeles City right now and bought me a place here. I plan on starting a business here inside the subdivision community that should thrive as time goes on. I rather take my chances with volcanos, Tsunamis, earthquakes, and the occasional beheading than the shit the goverment keeps throwing our way. I can take care of myself and not needing a goverment agency to baby me with every law or make me out helpless as is the current direction now.

Well he turned himself in today. Yesterday he was saying he would "talk" to authorities but if he were arrested or harmed more leaks would occur, nastier ones at that. Was arrested anyway, and bail has been denied. Funny thing is, a wikileaks spokesperson said they do not intend to release the more damning leaks Assange said would be released upon his arrest.

I read the memos myself, they don't seem that nasty or surprising to me.

I think his insurance file is for if and when he is killed or jailed for life. More likely the killed though.

Only until it comes out that they are all secret Muslim-Jews hellbent on destroying-conrtolling the free world. And I have yet to see any pertinent (or truly damning) information to be released by The Great Albino Hope. What's been released amounts to nothing more than high school gossip.

I'm still trying to figure out what the guy running Wiki Leaks is trying to prove.

The video seems relevant to his statement. I hope this post is worthy enough Fireguy.

Not some giant revelation, our diplomats like most ranking bureaucrats are mostly the children of connected people who have degrees in lager drinking and think their jobs entail gossiping about foreign leaders. I know, try not to act shocked.

I think the fact that nations were panicking about lowly proles getting a glimpse of what they actually do is funnier than the revelations themselves.

American journalism professors urge Obama not to prosecute Julian Assange, WikiLeaks

Columbia Journalism School said:

Attorney General Eric Holder
U.S. Department of Justice
950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20530-0001

Dear Mr. President and General Holder:

As faculty members and officers of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, we are concerned by recent reports that the Department of Justice is considering criminal charges against Julian Assange or others associated with Wikileaks.

Journalists have a responsibility to exercise careful news judgment when classified documents are involved, including assessing whether a document is legitimately confidential and whether there may be harm from its publication.

But while we hold varying opinions of Wikileaks' methods and decisions, we all believe that in publishing diplomatic cables Wikileaks is engaging in journalistic activity protected by the First Amendment. Any prosecution of Wikileaks' staff for receiving, possessing or publishing classified materials will set a dangerous precedent for reporters in any publication or medium, potentially chilling investigative journalism and other First Amendment-protected activity.

As a historical matter, government overreaction to publication of leaked material in the press has always been more damaging to American democracy than the leaks themselves.

The U.S. and the First Amendment continue to set a world standard for freedom of the press, encouraging journalists in many nations to take significant risks on behalf of transparency. Prosecution in the Wikileaks case would greatly damage American standing in free-press debates worldwide and would dishearten those journalists looking to this nation for inspiration.

We urge you to pursue a course of prudent restraint in the Wikileaks matter. Please note this letter reflects our individual views, not a position of Columbia University or the Journalism School.

Respectfully,

Emily Bell, Professor of Professional Practice; Director, Tow Center for Digital Journalism

Yeah any charges they level at Assange are complete bullshit unless they can prove that he solicited Bradley Manning to obtain the material. This guy is doing us a giant favor and this is how we repay him.. fuck.

Okay there's a new Assange interview on MSNBC. Surprise, surprise he says that the DoD is trying to psychologically pressure manning into testifying that Assange solicited the material from him.

It's difficult being right all the time.

The burden of being correct. Or the burden of knowing how our pathetic government operates.
