Who would of thought SE would be doing this?

Square Enix announced Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection will be coming to PSP in Japan in Spring 2011, the game will include remake of both Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IV The After Years. In addition, the PSP version also includes a new scenario that connects the stories of FFIV and FFIV The After Years together.

Sounds awesome, but god dammit, it needs more FFIII ported to PSP.

Only if they make it like the NES FF3. DS one was decent, but the NES version is in a league of it's own.

Wonder how the PSP version will play. Like the SNES version? Or the tweeked DS version?

i'm a technological snob, but i think i've every right to be given the history of this game's re-releases.

if its just HD2D im giving it a miss..
makes no sense to me when a 3D version exists.

I am looking forward to this, this was my first Final Fantasy back in the SNES days, so I will play any remake they shoot at me. Maybe they will fix a few things that were wrong with After Years. I thought After Years was okay and did like some of the new characters. Kain's story was definitely the best, and Golbez's. After Years though did feel like it was cheaply put together, interface wise, so hopefully they work on that a bit.

I would love them if they straight out made an HD version of FF3. As much as I enjoyed the DS version, it changed the characters and the feeling of the NES game. It would be nice if they remade this with the classic Onion Knights. Not to mention, would be weird in the PSP's remakes if it went 1, 2, 4. But lets not forget that SE said there is possible future plans to remake Final Fantasy V and VI. Rather if they will be on the PSP and 3DS, I dunno.

I would say the main lure would probably be playing After years, since till now it was Wii console exclusive. Should be interesting.

I dunno. I'd prefer a DS remake of FFV or FFVI, I do suppose I'll have to give this a looksee though,

Knowing Squenix, though, we'll see FF7 long before either of those.

I wouldn't hold your breath on a FF7 remake either. That is definitely SE's trump card whenever the company flops to the point that the only thing that would save them is a remake. I am not caring about remakes as much as I want to see future games come out.

Final Fantasy XV (Hopefully SE's answer to people's complaints over the years, since they finally admitted that something is wrong in the company.)

Kingdom Hearts 3 (Whenever it's 50,000 side games finished getting made.)

Chrono Break (Debating if this will ever come out in my lifetime.)

Final Fantasy v.XIII (Waiting just for the actual preview in January, sad that this game is taking so long to make, everyone is psyched about simply getting to see a preview of it.)

So as much as I like to play remakes of classic games I love, I rather see the company try to move forward and learn from their mistakes in the recent years. Even though I loved FFXIII, there is so much more that could have been done to make it a better game, especially with all the time they had with it. Remakes are basically SE's way of getting out of a jam whenever they are dropping in business.

I think SE is getting fairly close to that :P

Either way, I wouldn't mind a portable remake of FF5/FF6 myself since the GBA ones were pure crap IMO (How the hell did the sound quality suffer so much?) but yeah, when FF15 rolls around I hope SE goes back to the roots of what made FF fun.

Not necessarily. Square-Enix is still holding strong in Japan. FFXIV was just one of the things that created a major setback for the company in many ways. SE has gotten themselves out of jams before. The thing here is that (and would hit Japan also) is bringing out a half ass'ed product with a large name on it. Final Fantasy is the glue that holds that company together, and bringing out titles that are not up to players satisfaction will hit them heavily to the point that they will fuse together with another company. Stay tuned for Square-Enix-Atlus.

If SE even THINKS of touching Atlus and the Tramua Center series...

But still, it seems SE won't recover from the decline they've had since Hironobu Sakaguchi left and created Mistwalker.

I won't say SE has gotten worse since Sakaguchi left, but it is definitely different from when he left, and that is what Square's core fan base is seeing. They want the vibe in a game that Sakaguchi gave, and SE just can't get that aspect right. Future Final Fantasy's I bet will be as fantastic as the previous, but they never will have what FF1-10 had, even if the game is better.

SE will still be around for years to come. You forget that the still have one BIG card up their sleeve. If things really get bad for them they will just remake (or at the very least have a FFHD collection) one of the older titles, presumably FF6-9 and that would intently prop them out of the hole. No matter how you guys may feel about those possible remakes, you can't deny the power they hold over the fans and they would sell like really really REALLY HOTcakes lol.

Well we'll see. After the mixed reviews 13 seems to get and how much of a disaster 14 was hopefully SE does make a major change. I still want SE to go back to their roots for FF15 with a fantasy based setting instead of all this sci-fi crap.

Only 7, 8, and 13 had real sci-fi themes. 10 did sort of, but that theme was really all it's own, using southern Asia as a theme.

Well I guess what I mean is a high fantasy theme. Where airships are a lost technology or ungodly rare, swords/shields,etc., no guns. And a job system instead of the blank slate crap.

i dont think SE will ever reach that point.
They have FFXI. It'll be able to spin enough money to keep them afloat as long as they downsize on some projects or restructure to take on less at a go.

The restructuring was mainly in XIV's team only, because XIV bombed on release and they haven't yet started charging on it, incurring lost subscriptions since October, but its a necessary loss to ensure that XIV can be righted in the near future..

I get the feeling SE will go down the path of remakes pretty often. They sell well, and people actually prefer the older stuff to the new ones, save for KH and FF mostly. DQ is an acquired taste that hasn't performed nearly as well anywhere else outside of Japan.

Square under Sakaguchi was very different, but it also employed a lot of make-or-break strategies which are far too risky in todays gaming industry. The initial FF and FF7 was a make or break and thankfully they succeeded. The Spirits Within brought Square to near bankruptcy and it was mainly the merger that ultimately saved Square. TSW was entirely Sakaguchi's idea tho, so I think he left the company out of a mixture of pride/honor and the fact that he was no longer at the top.

Other than full or updated remakes of FF3-9, I'm actually looking forward to a new Final Fantasy that follows in the style of FF8 in particular. Most FFs are rooted in medieval fantasy. FF6 has elements of steampunk and 7 cyberpunk. 10 has some asian elements and 13 is futuristic. 8 was the only one that stuck to a modern atmosphere and I loved that. It never really went over the top on anything other than Esthar - I also loved that it featured a lot of art nouveau and early 20th century architectural styles (very European) which gave it a classic look.

I just like the idea of realistic fantasy a lot i guess

Square has lost touch with the audience that made them superstars, primarily because that audience has grown up.

Solution: Remake Xenogears, and actually fucking finish it this time. (Also, I am not biased in the least by my favorite JRPG of all time.)
