I am looking and I cant find it where someone asked the question about FFXIV's mass copy and paste.
it showed a ton of areas circling all the copy and pase areas then ask SE to comment.
they said something along the lines of its too much data so thats why we did that.
anyone know where it is?

I can't remember where it was, but Tanaka said they've been doing that since FF1 (Which is 100%) true. They had to copy/paste a lot due to if they didn't the size of zones would be about a TB or so.
I'll see if I can find it.
EDIT: Found it:

Quote
PC Gamer: Recently, players have been posting videos of terrain they think was copy and pasted (eg. 1, 2 maps showing all the relevant areas). Is that the case, and if so why?
Hiromichi Tanaka: Since FFI, we have always used the same design to show the scenery. We have one map divided into different parts, and then we use those parts. Otherwise, the data size is going to be terabytes. So, from the memory size point of view, its important to compile the data size. That being said, because we wanted the game to be seamless, we do understand theres a lack of variation. So thats why we do want to have more unique aspects in the area, depending on what area of the game it is. However, even for the 3D version for other MMOs, using the same data is quite common in designing the game.

thanks, might as well talk bout it since its here.
do they really need to copy/paste in the amout they did in ffxiv? was it caused from the huge graphical data to make it look pretty? laziness? ( like some say)
i mean you see the same thing over the span of 5 mins like :

Either the areas need to be smaller or the textures worse.
Regardless as the development team learns to use their game engine better the results will improve considerably in the future. As with any other MMO around.

Or they'll make it F2P and it'll turn into absolute garbage.

You really can't do much with areas already released. It's understandable when you use copy and pasted terrain, all games do it, but hiding it is what makes the game not feel copy and pasted. FFXIV unfortunately put no effort into trying to get people to not notice it. The only thing you can do is not make it feel copy and pasted in future areas.
It doesn't bother me to tell the truth, but I can understand the complaints towards it. The only time it bothers me is in the Gridania area. That place was copy and pasted so badly that you can't get through there without having to refer to your map every 5 seconds because everything looks the same. I just find it hard to believe that the company did not see this before Alpha. It just makes it feel like rushed work.

As far as I'm concerned, Limsa was the only area SE did a good job on zone wise.

I would say thanalan, ,mor dhona, and coerthas are the lest trobblesome.
I really dislike the black shroud and La Noscea.
the black shroud has too much a linear feel and the areas are way too narrow. (it is hard to do some leves because of how narrow/ small the zone is)
La Noscea is a bit more open then black shroud but it is still a linear feel.

stuff like that, i mean really why do i have to walk all the way around like that if i want to walk say skull Vally to bloodshore?

Still beats Ul'Dah and Grid's zones by a long shot.

It's pretty much Tach. Canyon and Meri Mountains, some of the most annoy assed zones in the game.

And La Noscea isn't Konschat/La Theine, huh?
You don't really have much of an argument there.. You hated some zones in XI and carried it across games, OK.

At lest La Noscea doesn't have a bunch of cliffs you need to walk around to get up on.

yeah i have to agree with this, What i really care about is an open, non linuar, non copy paste feel, out of the 3 starter zones, outlaying ul'dah is best for that.
if you want to talk about cliffs you cant run down on there is a lot of shit like that around limsa that is not even maped.
a lot of examples being stuck like that on review sites are limsa areas.
in ffxi the zone that pissed me off the most was la thene platu and i will not use that to judge a different game

For me the only annoying areas in La Noscea are the areas around cliffs, other than that it's pretty smooth terrain.

those strange caves that when you fall down you can't get back up ( and leve mobs sit on some of the edges)
so if you fall on the wrong edge you have to run all the way back around again.
the unmapped cliffs.
the towers and other things like GT shown, the ul'dah part when they showed it was actually mapped.
what do you mean by smooth? ul'dah has a smooth path too, both zones are annoying off it, though ul'dah has more mapped then limsa.
