FFXI on Asus Eeepc 1000 HE Error on log-in

Ok, first of all, I do know that FFXI can be run on an Eee PC 1000HE- I have seen videos documenting this. I put XI on mine, which is running on Windows 7, and it plays the opening CS with no trouble, and even logs into the game- but the moment I see my character on screen, I'm told that I've encountered an error and Playonline must shut down. Is there some adjustment I should be making? It can't be Windows 7- that's what I was running on the desktop, and it worked fine... and I know the processor and video card should work (seen it done, again), and it's not coming anywhere near using all of my RAM (2 gigs, which is the most this little guy will hold).

I downloaded the Windows 7 friendly Playonline viewer, I should also mention. I'd really love for this to work...

any experience with playing XI on this model? Any suggestions (and not 'get a better pc'...believe me, I'd love to)

Do you happen to be useing widower, if so turn off plug-ins see if it still crashs.

All the videos I have seen of XI running on a Eee have been useing XP.
Being that it happens as soon as you get into game, Id think its some kinda gfx driver issue. I'd start there and see if there is any newer drivers (or older even) and try them out.

Sorry I couldn't be of much help, try checking out http://forum.eeeuser.com to if there is anything that may be of help for you.

Can you provide the exact error that you're seeing when it crashes?

I managed to get FFXI working on my laptop which uses an Intel GMA X3000 chip. Now, here's the thing: It didn't run before, well it didn't run very well a year ago. A year ago with an older driver, the game looked more like Final Fantasy VII on the PS1-- no textures, all color shaded graphics. Flash forward to about three or four months ago, Intel had a new update and I installed it with some modification to get it installed on my Dell laptop. Now, it runs pretty decently though I have to turn off a lot things like weather and special effects. It gets really laggy in Port Jeuno thanks to Abyssea. Other than that, haven't had any issues.

If that worked for me, then it might work for you. A driver update for the GMA 950 in the ASUS would probably fix it. Like someone said above, I've only seen FFXI work on Windows XP for the EEE PC. Windows 7 probably requires an update.

Also, the Intel driver might need to be modified to get it installed on your laptop.

Here is a link to the updated driver: http://www.mediafire...cg6djyxyd65bmyz

Note: If it refuses to install, "force it" by going to Device Manager then right-click the video card (Intel HD or Intel GMA or similar) then select "Update driver..." Afterwards, point it to the folder where you extracted the ZIP file to. Locate the INF file it finds and install it.

ASUS' had September 2009. Intel's latest is October 2009 for the GMA 950. I add those files to that ZIP file in the download. Lastly, this is for Windows 7 32-bit only. PM me if this fixes it or there are problems.

I got it to log in! :) Thanks a lot!

The only problem now, which I should have anticipated...is how to control it on this keyboard. I can move the camera with the arrow keys, but there's no pad to the right for movement and I'm not sure how to open the menu now (I always just hit the middle button on the mouse, and this has a touch pad) since it's not a full-sized keyboard. I guess I've gotten so used to it over the years that I find myself at a loss for what to do now...right now I'm trying to use FFxi config and figure out how to make this work:P

I'm glad it worked out. ^^

I highly recommend getting a controller for a laptop or a full sized keyboard to control FFXI. The laptop keyboard's are too compact for controlling FFXI. Even with setting keyboard to Compact in the in-game settings (under Config), it's still unintuitive to control FFXI on a compact laptop keyboard unless you get one of those laptops with a fullsized keyboard.

I'll definitely have to do that...I can barely function in an abyssea party with this keyboard! Just have to find a keyboard that hooks up to it via usb... for cheap (it'll have to do until I can get a new desktop).
