Whether people like it or not, thanks to WoW and a number of other popular MMOs that feature jumping, swimming, mounts, what have you, a lot of people view those features as a standard in the MMO genre. Of course games can do without them but then you're alienating a large portion of the MMO market who view games without jumping as inferior for traveling, combat, exploration and give the feeling of being tied down when other games allow them much more freedom in movement options. When you've got scenarios such as:

FFXIV trailer appears on gaming site --> "DOES THIS GAME HAVE JUMPING? NO? WTF???" etc.

trying to justify to SE to not implement jumping is nonsense. It doesn't really matter if a small minority of people in the already gigantic amount of people playing or interested in FFXIV right now (hmm...) have a problem with it, because adding it in is going to attract people who wrote the game off or haven't looked at it more than once since shown. (What, those people are idiots? Morons, you say? I'm pretty sure all SE can hear is "money")
Assuming PS3 release is going to look like an entirely different game and it needs to be very different from what it is now to interest people, jumping would really help make it look different to those people with a passing interest. Can't really entice anyone with "FFXIV, NOW WITH MORE CONTENT!" when A ) People always expect MMOs to create more content as time goes on, FFXIV's only problem wasn't that and B ) a big complaint about the game were the foundations i.e. crappy combat, no jumping/swimming, etc. Content issues didn't come up on forums until after a month or so from release when most people who tried the game had already quit (I don't personally know anyone who played FFXIV for longer than 3 weeks before giving up) so a lot of people who tried FFXIV and hated it aren't concerned about content that's guaranteed to be added, they want to see visible improvements. Jumping is a visible improvement. Serious improvements that shake the foundation of the game. Jumping, auction house, new battle system etc. are what they're looking for.

But you know what, that makes too much fucking sense. Let SE keep catering to the 20-50k people currently playing FFXIV and not try to attract the people who thought it looked like a piece of shit from day one. Visible, marked improvements to the gameplay to facilitate an easier more impactful marketing campaign for the re-launch? Fuck no! Behind the scenes only changes, please! Make those new players do research to find out what's different!

XI and XIV areas are different. XI worked fine without jumping. People asking for jumping in XIV have a better case simply because of the type of terrain that's found in XIV areas.

XI's terrain issues aren't as bad as XIV's. Most of the cliffs you could drop down in XI, similar ones you can't in XIV. XIV has far more cliffs than XI to begin with, but when you add in the terrible invisible walls impeding you all the time the number of people clamoring for jumping increases, many of which were XI players which can be seen from the poll. Asking for jumping in XI wasn't needed because there were few cliffs and ledges in the game and the invisible walls were less obtrusive. Asking for jumping in XIV makes far more sense.

XIV can and will change the terrain issues so it's just as easy to jump down from cliffs like it was in XI. That's a given. But that doesn't address the obvious fact that XIV as a whole has a fuck ton more cliffs in the game. Lessening terrain boundaries so you can walk up cliffs doesn't make sense. Jumping and climbing does from an aesthetic and logical standpoint.

Can anyone mention a game that doesn't allow you to jump but forces cliffs and hills in your face constantly that you need to walk around to progress? A game that is asking you to travel from A to B but places massive amounts of terrain or objects in your path which forces you to walk around it to progress for no other reason other than inconvenience? Those listed earlier, Demon's souls, MGS, etc. don't have that problem. It's quite easy to traverse in those games, in XIV it's annoying, hence the outcry. Asking them to remove or remake large portions of areas that have cliffs seems a bit crazy and the absurdity of walking up large cliffs seems counterproductive for a community that seems so against jumping because it looks "retarded"

It's beyond March, it will renew it's subscription when the PS3 version is near release. The game is empty as it is, SE won't start charging and slam down that last nail.

From the beta to the final weeks after launch I still played... the problem isn't the game being unfinished. It's people not wanting to talk to each other.

Sure I've found a few people to talk to, but most people are more concerned with the game rather than the people in it. If it required more party play, yeah, it may have died day one. We won't ever know. I do know, however, than with it being so solo friendly, social interaction takes a back seat to listening to itunes while grinding away solo. FFXI did everything right. I had so many friends it wasn't funny. When you need to be nice to get anything done it really makes a difference. FFXIV will never be the game FFXI was because of this.

I don't know what happened to society. Way back on the Dreamcast when PSO came out everybody loved to talk to each other over the stupidest shit, and that game could be 100% solo if you wanted. Somewhere down the line people became more focused with making their character the best and not being nice.

Jumping? Great. I just keep FFXIV updated every update so that when they are finished with it and release the PS3 version, I can log in and see what all is done. If it's not, then I'll just uninstall it and chunk the box in the trash.

As a gamer who cut his teeth on Dreamcast and PSO and spent 7~ years in FF11 I gotta agree. Level 25 Lancer and I have yet to speak to a SINGLE PERSON, let alone join a linkshell. My crafts support my gear, everything is totally self-sufficient. Which is cool...but it completely defeats the point of playing an MMO. Remember the sense of shared destiny and intense partisanship that made FFXI so addictive? This game is like the complete anti-coop.

I play because it's free and I only have to log in every other day for quests. But Christ what a clusterfuck of a game. Bloated laggy UI, agonizingly sluggish item search, lack of adequate world search, completely ineffectual party system, gimpy combat, lack of quests...man lol. They could have just ported a fat piece of FF11 in with new graphics and done a million times better than this. Maybe a year from now they'll have their shit together!

just as I expected, this is something they should have implented earlier. but even if they do implent jumping it will be like a 1 sec delay like everything else and will reveal even more sluggishness of this worthless game.
