I am starting up a new account with a friend of mine.
I would like to:
level a sub job to 18
level RDM to 30+
and then either level the sub job some more in order to just level RDM or unlock PLD/NIN/DNC and start leveling those(also solo/duo).
Pretty much I would like to be able to solo and duo with a friend for exp (no I have no idea what he is going to play) as RDM.
Questions:
What sub job(s) for RDM would be good for solo and duo exp'ing from level 1-?? ? (you can break it up into leveling groups like 1-20 21-30 and so on)
Are any of the crafts still worth leveling for convenience and or money?
Will I have to make most of my own armors? (are the AHs dead/dying?)
I have pretty much opted to join Asura, is there a better server or is Asura my best bet for a new account?
If you can think of any other info I need please let me know.

generally /whm is for when you need to na, off sub you get your first one at whm9 so rdm would need to be 18
09 Paralyna (rdm 18)
14 Blindna(rdm28)
19 Silena(rdm 38)
29 Cursna(rdm 58)
32 Erase(rdm64)
34 Viruna(rdm 68)
36 Teleport-Dem (rdm 72)
36 Teleport-Holla (rdm 72)
36 Teleport-Mea (rdm 72)
38 Teleport-Altep (rdm 76)
38 Teleport-Yhoat (rdm 76)
39 Stona (rdm 78)
42 Teleport-Vahzl (rdm 84)
/BLM gives these though the 2 spells people useally /blm now is stun, sleepaga, and to a lesser extent tractor.
16 Shock (32 RDM)
18 Rasp (36 RDM)
20 Choke (40 RDM)
22 Frost (44 RDM)
24 Burn ( 48 RDM)
31 Sleepga (61 RDM)
45 Stun (90 RDM)
/SCH can aoe buff or AoE spell like sleep, once every 2 mins (rdm 80) , futher it can give you na spells up to erase ( no viruna or stona at 90) while giving you 10% mp off spells when you use the right spell under light arts or dark arts.
you can start doing rdm/sch at level 20 but you dont gain much that point.
with soloing at 90 be mostly /nin
while duoing at 90 ill be mostly /SCH or /WHM depending what na you need to na your friend. if you are able to get away with /SCH that means you can aquaviel and stoneskin them as a safeguard for thier shaddows.
no one really cares about gear 1-70 ish so crafting took a big hit from abyssea, for the most part because its smn burn 10>30 and abyssea 30>70 as leeches , though people can still leech till getting 90 gear or what do i sub for this level is for the most part irreverent.

RDM/SCH is going to be your best support role option (sit back, buff, debuff and nuke occasionally) unless you need a specific spell from another sub. However, it seems like you might want to focus on melee jobs, specifically PLD, NIN or DNC, once you get to 30. I'll give a quick run down on either way.
If you want to level RDM as your first, RDM/SCH will be your best option from 20+ (realistically 30+ because you won't be able to unlock it until 30) if you don't plan to melee AND you don't need specific spells from /WHM or /BLM. Before 20, /WHM gives a couple extra spells where /SCH gives absolutely nothing. If you plan on meleeing (which is most likely, seeing as how you are going to try to duo), RDM/DNC will actually be a fairly viable option as soon as you get Curing Waltz, which will be @ RDM30/DNC15. What I would do, as far as leveling priority here (and assuming that you're taking RDM up first), is take WHM to 18, unlock SJ, take RDM to 30, unlock SCH and DNC, then level all of your sub jobs to 49 (SCH, DNC, BLM, WHM). As far as grinding XP, what you should do is check out the mobs you're going to be targeting, see if they have any paralyze, poison or other enfeebling moves and make sure you can counter them (if at all possible). Once you're higher level (74+), solo and duoing will mainly be done /NIN, but that's an entirely different type of play and you shouldn't worry about that for a while. I will note though, that leveling this way is going to be slow an painful. Even with the recent buffs to Fields of Valor and just regular XP off of mobs, this is not going to be a quick way to level.
However, if you want to go the melee route, what I would do is level MNK to 18, WAR to 30 (with /MNK obviously) and unlock advanced jobs. Depending on what job you want to take up first, you'll need to level different subs. For NIN, you'll mainly want /WAR and /DNC. There are some other semi-situational sub jobs once you get to higher levels for NIN, but you can worry (and ask) about those later. For PLD, you'll want NIN, DNC and WAR available (again, there are other SJs for situational use later). For DNC, you'll want to have /MNK early on (until about 20 or so) and then from there either /NIN or /WAR (or /SAM at mid levels, usually about 60+ it becomes viable, depending on the mob and your partner). You should be warned that all three jobs (PLD, NIN and DNC) are going to kill very slowly compared to a pure DD (like MNK, SAM or WAR), which is going to make your already slow grind even slower.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

What has been said already is sufficient until additional information is provided on your partner's job/specifics. To expand on crafting a bit, it is difficult, slow, and takes a long time to see a profit under the best circumstances. The only real way to make money crafting is consumables, for the most part. Cooking has some fantastic money makers even for me now, but it still is an arduous and Gil consuming process to get to that point. I'd advise against it until you are secure enough to farm your own materials, and just look for easy synths that will make you money. Depending on some raw materials prices, there are level 1-5 synths that will render a profit at vendor, which can really help turn your trash into starting Gil.
