Why do I see this so much in Abyssea?
Is it because people are following guides from 2004 without using their brains or what?
I would join a party, you see, and I'd see a fellow BST, subbing WHM and in full Bison gear (why? there has never been a reason for that - in solo or otherwise, the only good piece is the head...)
so, this is sort of a post to tell you that things have changed .... actually they havent, you were never ever supposed to sub WHM in a melee party.
Sub Ninja in an EXP party, guys, or even dancer if you want to keep the healing properties. WHM sub solo isnt all that useful anymore, its best usage would probably be pushing as much MND as you can for reward - in the event that you cannot melee with your pet in solo (ie, bakka, raskovnik). beyond that, Ninja has almost always been superior once you could use it (getting hit vs healing those hits, and being able to pump out a few swings in the absense of a pet)
you are not an effective healer, you are best suited to a miniature warrior in the seat of a relatively large and replaceable truck. sub WHM when soloing/duoing/farming outside of Abyssea, if need be. DNC is usually superior, unless you cannot melee.
On a tangent of other experiences, do not bring BST/WHM to Dynamis. Do not sic your pets on statues, we dont melee those for a reason.
You dont even have to try hard to be a decent DD in abyssea, my Nazuna would occasionally pull hate with its humongous critical hits, but at least maximize your effectiveness and wear some perle if you havent worked on melee gear. It will make that much more of a difference, and it will prevent the perpetuation of more myths among beastmaster.
BST/WHM dropping a little note for new BST's

A post that makes sense on KI? I must be losing my touch with the game.

If you wanna heal, break out the white rabbit. AoE Magic Carrot. mmmmm
Was the Dynamis BST at least using the ladybug for minor TH? My LS has a blm that can 1-shot statues and we usually bring more than 1 with us. Hard to land TH on something that's dead, and I don't think Thf boomerang TH counts when it misses or does zero dmg.

It would apply TH according to the old standards so it should still give you a lowered level of TH with the current system.

So even in solo situation, /DNC > /WHM now? I didn't played a lot since the level cap, except for, well, leveling in Abyssea.

As is so often said, "shit's situational". However, /DNC offers Dual Wield, in addition to healig utility, certainly making it a bit more preferable for a melee situation than /WHM. Back when I levelled BST I did it almost entirely /DNC. Wish it had DW built in back then, less TP loss for charm than switching to Light Staff. >.>

So Dual Axe is better than Tatami Shield nowadays? Sorry I didn't update my knowledge of stuff we can/must/shall equip.
And another question: since our jugs are 90 like we are, don't we need CHR anymore, since I don't see the point of charming less powerful wild mobs now.

Dual axes with Pet -PDT seem to be the preferred MO on Alexander. Dual Pet Evasions are nice for letting DipperYuly shine for high level farming. I've taken to soloing NW Apollyon with her tanking for me quite admirably even without said axes. I cannot recall the last time I saw a Tatami Shield in use.
Charisma gear is all for Primal Rend, if you find yourself using it these days. In Abyssea I wouldn't be caught using anything but Rampage due to Crit Atmas being so important to DPS in a party situation. Though I suppose if you stacked some MAB Atma you could get some interesting results. It refuses to unlock for me, otherwise I'd consider testing myself. SE is of the opinion that we are only to charm mobs up til the point we start XPing in Abyssea with everyone else. The highest level mobs I can think of off the top of my head to charm are outside Tavnazia anyways, though maybe there are some in Aht Urgahn, but.... dead expansion is dead.

R.I.P - Tatami Shield BST/whm.
Tatami is Situational at best, but I think dual wielding axes as /dnc or /nin proves more reliable nowadays. Don't forget FFXI has entered into "easy mode". Why struggle with /whm when /dnc and /nin can accomplish that and much more?
I haven't seen one Tatami shield worn by any BST's I've walked by/checked. In fact, I've seen Hickory Shields selling (or not selling) in bazaars for 5k. Gration is a lonely Giant...

Thank you for the answers, I figure how wrong I was!
So if I understand this correct, everything is about trials weapons now?

Or dropped weapons like Glyph Axe (Bakka has yet to drop one for me >.>). At issue is that Beastmaster is now as valuable a party member as most other classes. Rampage is a Crit WS, and therefore exploited with Raging Rush/Voracious Violet Atmas. The pet makes an excellent hate dump, Biscuits cure obscene amounts of health in Abyssea, and the most important detail, the new jugs are WORTH USING. I never thought I would see that day!
A Beastmaster should never have hate for longer than a few seconds in Abyssea, so you should add as much to your damage as possible via a second axe rather than rely on Tatami Shield maybe tossing you a spare intimidation/even less frequent Shield block.

Thanks to everyone's advices, I finished my first PDT-10%! Took less time that I thought!
Now, to level dancer...
BTW, I found several new high-level charmable monsters in Halvung. Orichalcum Shell (Crab lv88-89) and Sulfuric Pugil (lv~86). Was so happy to charm something worth again!
