Aside from that, I'm fairly certain all major universities now have a group study area, which is intended to be loud, and a more quite area where cell phones are not allowed. If she'd stop playing with her Stupid Spoiled Whore Video Play-set, she'd probably figure that out.

Eh, people are loud as shit in the library, asian or not. Put on some headphones or earplugs or deal with it like the rest of us. But I do think it's funny how this kinda thing blows up so much when I hear more racist shit on youtube from Peter Chao (Only bringing this up because I saw this UCLA vid on youtube like the rest of you). Racism isn't even funny, it's a crutch for people who aren't clever enough to think of anything else to bag on. Maybe shouldn't have mentioned the tsunami just yet and people might not have been so up in arms over it. My friend was getting so uppity over this video cuz she's asian, but she's constantly cracking jokes on mexicans. I kinda just sat there listening to her rant about how racist this was and struggled so hard not to be a douche and call her out on her hypocrisy, because, well, she's kinda cute. Still, people need to stop being so sensitive or just learn to ignore these kinds of racist people, it's not that hard to do.

Anyhow, UCLA has declined to get involved. I consider this a good thing. She claims she is withdrawing due to death threats and similar. I am less certain about this. I mean, obviously this waste of flesh doesn't need to be clogging up the arteries of higher learning (not that about 60-80% of any given freshman class at university is meaningfully different in their having no good reason being there) and clearly the university did not need to step in because mob rule took care of the problem for them... but is mob rule something to applaud? I can't really see someone carrying through on a death threat against her, though, so I guess we'll just chalk this up to self-correction by one's peer group.

Also, what kind of moron goes to school in California and publicly rants about Asians (or Hispanics)? There's painting a target on your face and then there's suicide. This is certainly the latter.

And for the record, I went to the largest university in the country here in central Ohio which has a remarkable racial diversity and all of our libraries are quite hushed. Not pin-drop quiet, but even when they're jam-packed during finals week, I cannot imagine anyone having trouble concentrating on their work. Maybe it's a California thing to treat the library and your fellow students like trash?

College is probably the absolute worst place I could be in this respect, as it seems that 95% of the population is of the jersey shore mentality and I honestly have gone beyond my threshold to deal with these drinking and partying savants. I, everyday, experience such searing hatred when presented with their ignorance, that I half expect to experience abnormal cardiac/artery dilation by the time I'm 30. No, I don't think you're sexually attractive when you drive next to me at school (blasting whichever hip-hop/pop/garbage is currently being played at the clubs) and try to talk to me over the auditory diarrhea spewing from your vibrating car. Are you kidding? The library here is obviously intended for facebook, youtube, and cell phone use only, as that's the only thing anybody does. Starbucks is where you study. (Because who wouldn't want to be a pretentious douche and learn at the same time?) It's as if these people can't afford to pay for internet and instead catch up on the totally awesome music video that accompanied "Look at Me Now" or Katy Perry's latest single in the library, with headphones (At maximum volume, so the rest of us can still hear it, duh). The only solace I find in this is that they will be deaf in twenty years.

I honestly don't get it. You'd figure that with all the hours I've worked in the library and other computer labs on campus that I'd have run into this sort of thing. Sure, I've watched people spend 4 hours on Facebook (and on Manhunt [gay hookup site] and World of Warcraft and other suitably embarrassing things), but everyone is actually fairly quiet and polite. You'd figure, if nothing else, that there's be one token really loud black chick or something but, nope, it's pretty much heads down and focus. Then again, the same is rather true of places like Texas, or so I am told. Maybe it's something to do with red-state-type influences? We have more than our fair share of the guys you were complaining about in your first half (and their female equivalents), but they just don't go to places where learning might happen if only by osmotic pressure.

On the note of people who apparently cannot afford internet access, though, sometimes that is true. I was working a midnight shift and a guy came in, no joke, with his entire home rig. He'd cleared it with me first (who the fuck cares at 3 AM?) and we got him connected to the network exclusively so he could verify his copy of Spore. The world is a strange, strange place, especially for us nocturnal folk.

I'm probably just remembering the times it happens more than the times it doesn't, but I honestly don't even try to study in the library. I have never had a pleasant experience studying there, though that's not solely due to the aforementioned.
