Hello, I've been trying to keep up on the news about FFXIV... mainly because I played FFXI for 4 or 5 years and left a few years back for WoW. When I heard from an old friend awhile back that this game was coming out, at first I was planning on buying and playing it... but I waited a week and read the reviews and decided against it for obvious reasons. Well, now that I have quit WoW (right around the time CATA came out), and my life has settled down, I've been looking into any MMOs that aren't WoW. So, of course, I've already bought and tried Rift, but I can't get the fact that I loved FFXI so much out of my head... so I figured I'd ask if FFXIV has gotten any better since launch, if anyone at all even plays it, any information of that sort.
Sorry if this has been posted already. Thanks for the replies (if there's anyone to reply lol)

XIV has gotten better, but better is a very relative term. The game is still horse shit. You'd be better off going back to FFXI. It's almost like a new game with all the changes in the last year or so.

Like Banter said, FF14 has improved a lot but, it still has a lot left and the new staff for FF14 is in the process of making it better, probably will take like 6-8 months to be awesome. FF11 is fun now I came back after 2 years out.

Well, I don't have a 75 FFXI character anymore, that ship sailed a long time ago. Is there still a large enough community to be able to level to cap, or do endgame? Oh, and how long would it take to get to cap? Because it used to take forever, and I'm not really up to that kind of a grind anymore, especially on a game that probably doesn't have much life left.

Would be best to wait til April or May to see what happens. I believe in April the battle system will be readjusted.

Yeah, I decided against playing 14. I was thinking about 11 since it's like 9 dollars to start playing anyways... but I don't have any characters so I'd be starting from scratch which I doubt is worth it... considering the amount of time and effort it used to take to get parties and make money. Unless those things have changed?

Okay, the only thing that's holding me back from entering my credit card and downloading FFXI off the official site's link to D2D is that gil is apparently still just as hard to make... starting from scratch makes it very hard to procure the money for the armor I would be used to having... has SE remedied this in any way? Like quested armor rewards or something?

All I can say is meh. You get twice as much of xp from monsters now and you can do fields of valor as much as you like now for xp. Also Dynamis is going to start giving out xp too. You hardly need full parties anymore. Though I haven't played since October so...

The FFXI grind is ridiculously easy. You can leech Abyssea XP from level 30 on up and the XP rates can reach ridiculous levels. Making gil is easy for some people and not so much for others (crafters have really gotten shafted) but you don't need gil nearly as much any more because most of the top tier equipment is via quests or NMs anyways.

If you do enter ffxi, its probably not very difficult to look for a server that has a pretty high economy, build up your tenshodo/windy/jeuno/bastok/sandy fame and do scroll/brown belt/tele etc quests for gil. I banked off of that and I'm still sittin on gil after 4 months. Then again, there isn't very much to buy, but its easy to get into the game and pick up fairly quickly.

Thanks so much for the replies! =] I'll be coming back, but I'm sure you remember how long it takes to download all those patches >.< haha, while I'm waiting, does anyone have a suggestion for a realm I should start on? Maybe even a linkshell I could join? I'm sure all of my old friends have quit, and the best part of this game is the community and I don't want to be lonely! haha

Go to Lakshmi and join the Ballista Ranks.....
No but seriously, ffxiah.com, check the server price index for item prices, and decide from there where you wanna go. I would say come to Sylph since I have a pretty nice linkshell with 15+ppl in it every single day, but to each his own. I haven't visited other servers (besides olde Cerberus, X-Fairy) so I can't tell you how Sylph compares to others really.

Just an FYI, the current collection on sale does not include the abyssea addons, so you need to buy them for 10 bucks each. So coming back is roughly 35-40 dollars.

Ah, well then I'm going out and getting ffxiv. Maybe by ps3 release things will get better and a lot of the fanbase will come back. Anyone know of a decent server with a few NAs around? Or a linkshell. I doubt there are any considering how the game's launch went.

Unless you don't buy Abyssea (like me) and just level up your jobs until you're ready for some end-game. I think the price of Abyssea is going to see a price drop soon after the major update in april. Well, I hope anyways.
Also, FFXIV... good luck finding enjoyment in that game. There's definately things to see, as graphically, the game is gorgeous. Just it's not on par with what you'd expect from a next generation MMO that has been in development so long. My advice would be to wait until ps3 version is released, as I'm sure you probably won't miss out on ANYTHING by starting late. Hell, SE might even throw in some type of incentive for ps3 users. It's your choice tho bro, but I guess you can't go wrong since they don't charge monthly fees yet. I don't know what servers are booming, but I know a few people around here lurk on Trabia. Just a thought.

I was under the impression that ps3 release was in March. Did they move it back?

When is the Auction House supposed to be implemented into the game?

When the ps3 version is released (we hope), then again, was it ever confirmed?
People, just wait til June-ish before you start your campaign into ffxiv. It'll cmoe with a new expansion, new in-game content, job uniqueness, improvements to the battle system and quest system and some other goodies I'm sure. This game is still in Post-Beta Beta Testing.
