Will a mid-2009 unibody Macbook Pro run FFXI (well)?

2.26GHz Core 2 Duo
2GB RAM
GeForce 9400M
160GB HDD

Please and thank you.

I can run SC2 on my macbook pro at fairly high settings.

There's no reason it shouldn't run it.

Well besides the OS.

Mac OS X sucks and SE doesn't code for it. I need to get windows for this machine badly.

You can actually run FFXI on OSX using wine, FFXI is the nr. 1 game available at WineHQ. I've tried installing it but didn't have to correct iso files so ended up not working. Not like I still play but just wanted to mess around with it.

I thought OSX Wine was never finished.
I'll check around for a link. I was looking to play FFXI again since the new Abyssea collection came out.

I wouldn't really trust the OSX wine ( AKA WineBottler(?) ) I'd just go for the Unix version installed through ports. But installing FFXI through wine can be quite difficult and frustrating. Also you need to make sure you have the correct wine version and the right ISO version.

http://appdb.winehq....TestingId=63824

Although it is possible on OSX it seems to work easier on Ubuntu.

I'm far from an expert but I'll try to help. I might even try to install it myself. But have you been able to install FFXI as well? or just POL? Which ISO did you use to install, what are the settings when you run winecfg? What version of wine are you using?

I've tried Crossware Games edition.. which was buggy.

I did pick up wine however from a website.. And it seems to run POL great. So far I can't test the game play.. as I am waiting until tomorrow to reactivate my account.. After update is finished.. I'll see if I can get it to run. But Wine is looking promising.

I've started to download the update and I find it runs incredibly slow.. not the program, just the download is going quite slow..

Anyone know if anything can be done about this?

idk if there are any ports to be forwarded to make it faster. Might want to look that up. I'm actually quite excited to see if it works haha, I haven't been able to download the game itself yet though.

Same here. I'll look into it in a bit. I have a 14000 flle download and after about 50 minutes it had only budged about 7.5% or so. It was downloading at a normal speed in CXG. So I'll see how it works out. Will poost some screenshots if I can get it to work.

I think FileVault May have been affecting download speed.. I turned it off and it seems to be running a bit faster but I can't tell yet..

Well I did manage to make it work after some trying. I'll post a brief screen shot for now.. as I need to go. I'll give updates on how the performance is in actual game play later.

Mythx, did you have any issues booting up the config software or did you edit the register file that houses the graphic info?

The actual FFXI config software I didn't touch. I did modify the registry to give a bigger screen... I had troubles booting up the game period after updates. And I found that you have to enable a virtual desktop in wine. I'll check on the config for ffxi in a bit when Im out of the game.

I've tried Wine-1.1.29 and the latest version of wine from mac port. Did you use the application wine or downloaded it through terminal?

Edit: I just downloaded the wine app it im able to use POL and updating right now. Cant open the config.exe though, however. If you use a virtual desktop like parallels you can open the config.exe there and edit your setting. Not really a pleasant way but atleast it works.

Edit edit: updating FFXI now, going to take a while, Good night!~

gl.
Make sure you have the virtual desktop enabled or it seems that it won't initialize direct3d.

and It ttook me about 10 hours for that update.. I thought it was running slow but it turns out it was just massive update to take on. I updated a smaller update on my windows laptop and it was going roughly the same speed.

This is what I used.

Ok, the game works, the screen is good, framerate is ok but the only problem i have right now is that my numpad wont work correctly. Whenever I type it works but if I try to walk it doesn't do anything. it seems to be something in the game I guess but I have no idea where to look.

Edit: I just noticed that my numlock key is set to Esc, and that my enter key on my numpad is set to alt, does anyone have any idea where I could configure this in FFXI? I know that it's not set on my computer, only FFXI.

Edit edit: I just bought GamePad Champion at the apple store for 6 euros, and now I can set keys to my PS3 controller. If you adjust FFXI misc. that you can use asdw to walk, you can put that on the controller. So that's solved.

I configured it in misc by either opening it with alt - or ctrl - then scrolling to settings.

I had to reconfigure it for some keys as there were slight lay out difference in a mac that arent what Im used to.

Some things weren't configurable like the targeting, so that didn't work for me. But at least my controller works
