I'm currently reinstalling FFXIV to see if I can stand the game as of now. I remember with the beta version you had to separately download each update from a torrent if you actually wanted to get somewhere.
Do I still need to do this if I want a fast update?
Thanks.

Does FFXIV still take forever to update?

Yes and no. If it's not on the day of the update it goes pretty smoothly. However on a major update, ramming bamboo under your fingernails is less painful than attempting to download.

I don't think it's THAT bad.. Still isn't what I would call smooth, but not fingernail bamboo worthy. More like.. Watching someone eat some cake, and you ask for a slice, but there isn't any left.

This is another problem I've noticed. For some people it works decent, but for some people you can't even peek 100KB/s

If you're having trouble hitting a decent speed on the 14 client you can easily remedy this by starting the download with the 14 client and then opening the download file on a different torrent client such as utorrent. I do it every time there's an update and haven't had problems yet.
EDIT: I didn't read the post. Apparently you already know all of this. If you're not downloading updates during peak hours (during the release of a major update) you should be fine.

People still use the client?
I haven't used the client since early 2011 after I figured out how to torrent it from the patch folder.

The more important question is "People still play the game?"

or a big fat "I TOLD YOU THIS GAME WOULD SWALLOW THE WHOLE LOAD".
