Was going to start a new game this week, and wasn't sure whether I should try out FFXIV before 2.0 released, or mess around with SWTOR until then.

Is leveling in FFXIV "fun"? , will there be other people in lowbie zones with me or is it pretty much barren unless you're a high level?

Don't bother, ever. The game is still pure shit and 2.0 doesn't seem like it's going to fix anything when it comes to leveling, balance, etc.

I don't really think there is any low players since no one is playing. Only a few high lvls that I've seen. That being said I do think more will restart hoping for a big change

I mean really? Pure shit? Sad to hear, since I been waiting for the game since 07... and been teased with a PS3 only promise in 2010 only for it to be 2012, and have seen nothing, not even a whisper about the PS3 version except for a September outline where they plan on starting the PS3 beta...

I hope E3 will provide a lot more information.

The game really is a long way from becoming even remotely enjoyable. There are a few dedicated groups playing and advancing through content... well, whatever content there is. Each patch holds promises of more things to do, but in the end the people who play aren't very impressed with the changes. As for my perspective on the game, i've been playing for about a year now and just cancelled my sub a few weeks ago and am not playing any MMOs at the moment. My reasons for quitting are varied (a less harsh way of saying that I quit because there are too many things the game doesn't have or is doing wrong), but if I were to list the main reasons for why I left I'd have to say it's that the content is very repetitive and not very difficult. There are no rewards for playing or advancing other than being able to tell people you did it since there's little to no content for you to use new gear on. Other than that, the job/class system is a complete joke. Some, if not most, of the jobs implemented are not even being used in dungeons because classes offer more utility while only sacrificing 1 or 2 useful abilities a job offers you. All in all, the game is a huge grind the entire way through for little to no reward. Not only that, but the game is so incredibly far from being worth a monthly subscription, and yet you are now forced to pay one.

I was planning on holding on until 2.0 is released, but seeing these bigger patches come and go, and seeing very little change at all, I sincerely doubt that when 2.0 comes around this game will be worth playing. There's always that possibility that I will come back and check it out if I see something interesting, but a lot of us have already wasted a lot of hours of our lives waiting for things to change, and with the exception of a very few minute things, it hasn't, and it doesn't look like it will.

As for my advice on starting FFXIV? I'm sure you've already guessed. Don't. A lot of us got sucked in because we loved FFXI and thought they were going to be changing this game into something worth playing, but wound up wasting a lot of time... waiting. You're better off playing something else. That's my firm answer to you. Do not waste time on this game.

(I'd just like to note that I was a firm supporter of SE and this game until the return of subscription fees when the game is nowhere near ready, and the constant postponement of updates which are very unimpressive.)

There are many more F2P games that deliver a much more enjoyable experience. The only thing FFXIV has going for it is the FF universe and graphics which don't justify a monthly subscription fee at all.

I beg to differ with the lot of you. I played the Alpha and Beta versions of FFXIV and disliked it as it progressed up to launch. That being said, I did not buy it at launch but i waited until March 2011 to join. When i started it lacked a lot it was hard to get me to log in. However since patch 1.19 came out I couldn't put it down. Here we are at 1.21 with 1.22 coming out soon and I still love the game. It is by no means anywhere near the fun FFXI was around 2003-2005 however the game has improved DRASTICALLY since Yoshi-P took over the game's development.

You could start now and do okay, a lot of people came back and a lot of new people started because they heard of the recent server merges that brought up peak time populations by a tremendous amount. I see EXP parties constantly at all levels (atleast on Ridill server).

However, for the best experience, I'd say wait until version2.0

If anyone decides to join sooner or wait and wants to come to Ridill (formerly Selbina) which is considered the FFXI veteran's server drop me a /tell to Xion Raserei

I feel like a lot of the people above who are calling the game crap really are not aware that the content that has been added to this version of the game between the summer of 2011 up until 2.0's release is just filler content until they are done rebuilding the game from the ground up for 2.0. Your not going to see that drastic difference until 2.0 is release. I say take a break and revisit it upon release, maybe a patch or two in.

Honestly also, XIV right now is only $9.99 a month for me also. I don't mind paying that until 2.0 is out to make my judgement. Hell, they gave us the game free for more than a year as an apology. They needed to start charging at some point to pay for 2.0. SE knows if they fail with 2.0 the company will most likely not recover from the bad image & money loss.

Thanks for the insight, Xion. I'm looking forward to the FFXIV release on PS3. I'll most likely head to Ridill if that is, in fact, where most of the old school FFXI peeps have gone. I cant wait to immerse myself with some old school friends of FFXI. Allears, will return!

People want it to be like FFXI and that's not the case. FFXIV is a whole different thing, it's based on it's predecessor but meant to be this way. The game is more fast paced for sure. If you got a free trial you might want to just give it a try if not convinced just wait. Simple as that.

I kinda think if they didnt use the same races as XI it would of had a differnt start. Sure it was unpolished at the start and has gottin some-what better, but alot of people went in thinking would be FFXI.2 and that isnt what they got.
