Anybody else get the feeling this is a more dps focused red mage? Maybe like a sam/blm?

sam/blm lol
Seems more like a replacement for aegis. "Tank job with main focus on elemental defense"
RDM is basicly obsolete, has been for sometime. This just seems to put the nail in the coffin for the melee rdm out there.

That was one of my fears as well as others who were discussing about Runic/Rune Knight as a possible new job some years ago. The players at that time that were discussing it were afraid it overlapped too much with PLD and/or RDM.

Fast forward to now and SE actually announces it as a sort of tank with elemental defense. PLD already died by the time Abyssea reached its peak and MNK replaced it as the de facto tank.

I'm seriously debating to give FFXI another try again having stopped back in September of last year. RDM was my first job in FFXI and will always be my primary job. Seeing a job that could possibly put the "final nail in the coffin" on it just like MNK has done to PLD, actually saddens me.

A friend last night that still plays FFXI said it best: "SE should work on fixing the original jobs first before adding new ones... PLD and RDM need fixing primarily."
