i posted it within a thread, but it might be easy to post it under a new topic so everyone can find it more easily. here's the deal:
1. get a DivX Bitrate Calculator or Xvid bitrate claculator (depends on the codec you're gonna use)
now you can calculate the size of the divX / Xvid file you want. Its easy, so you'll figure it out.
2. Download Flask encoder
http://flaskmpeg.sourceforge.net
use this program to cut the size. you need to have the codec you want to encode it to on your pc. i would advise the latest Xvid codec. much better than divX imho. dont have them? --> DC++ or bittorrent are good resources.... (offcourse, it goes without saying that you should never download illegal stuff there, like iso's, movies and other things)
3. Dub the movie
www.virtualdub.org
to clear errors and mess around with other stuff, sub to finish. Not always necessary.
just note that once you increase the size (surface size) of a movie, the filesize grows exponentially. (definately not in a straight line).
also, Xvid and DivX are the better codecs for avi files. Mpeg is either crappy quality or huge size.
a better alternative would be to make it into an ASF movie. plenty of tools for that around.
good luck!
