I've been levelling my summoner since i got all the avatars to sub for my whm.
It seems like summoner actually can do damage pretty well.
If you want to summon and watch your summon bash and IT monster and do as much damage as a melee, your wrong, if you join in and use ( +1 ) rings from level 14 and an up to date weapon ( staff ) you will be outdamaging all the melees.
Only got my summoner up to level 20 ( only been exping it this week, and not very hard ), but it seems pretty good so far, I've been doing it with a linkshell set group who all have full up to date gear every level so i'm not outdamaging because they are newbie.
I'll see if its the same situation higher up.
My main problem so far is not getting bored while levelling summoning skill between our xp sessions.
Summoners actually not that weak?

From lvls 10-25 in PT, you'll be using your avatars for their damage abilities and having a good time Gryffes. That's how every SMN plays in the early stages, as long as they have avatars (I kinda miss lvls 1-25 ;
It's from lvl 25 on that you'll start to feel our pain, and as Liquidsnake so eloquently points out in most of his posts (=P,) things go from bad to a lot worse after lvl 50. However, if SMN is only going to be your sub, then you'll have a pretty easy time of it. Qufim> Yhutunga> Yhoator> Garlaige and you're done with it, though you'd better get really good at casting Aerial Armor~^^

ok, to let you know now, Summoner can do ok damage up till 30+, after that it cant do crap for damage. read some of the other post and you will get info on that. im a level 60 summoner and im on the verge of starting another job because once you get higher up summoner has nothing to offer to groups accept more downtime

So...... whatever happened to that summoner petition?

Suppose a chemist job was implemented that let you use items on yourself for like 2-3X potency, would that maybe make SMN worthwhile? A SMN/CHM able to use ethers and mulsm could be efficient, maybe?

since theres no chemist, it doesnt help any of us summoners as of now, i wish there was something i could do to make this job better at the higher levels but theres nuthin i can do, no items are foods help fix all the over all probs of Summoners higher up

That still wouldn't make up for the fact that they do shit for damage. Even if they made summons have NO mp drain, I think that they'd be useless for damage.

do you keep summoning skill capped though? when i exped 16-20 tonight i noticed the damage at lvl 20 was really poor.
I cap mine before and after any xp session, and its very boring.
My staff skill is 150+ from playing whm and blm so i dont have to worry about that.
I noticed when playing blm with a good staff i was outhitting many melees with average equipment, i see summoner as even better because summon does good damage as well.
At lvl 20 i was hitting just under the monk if you added avatar+my damage, with a level 10 staff ( left my elm pole on an alt ack ), with elm pole i would have been outhitting monk equipped with best weapons for his level and he had +15 str ( chiefkabob + eq ).
I'll try and update this every 5 levels as a rolling playtest :-]
I intend to get smn to 60 for full af then stop. Its just something to do for fun really.

well higher up A summoners def and melee skills suck so you really wont be able to stand close and attack, well it would be pointless anyways because summoners melee misses constantly and the damage you do with your staff in weak, which is not worth dieing for

Summoner has a similar argument that rdms have when they get over the melee stages.
1-26 are very fast and rdm does fine with a sword.
27-33 rdm realizes that they arn't getting better damage and other jobs are outpacing
34+ Dispel, Refresh, Haste, enfeebles, aure Cure3 are everyones friend. Little to no reason to melee a IT unless you want to use Flatblade to stop a gob from throwing a bomb or a Spirits Within attack to kill an enemy at the end.
I think Summoner has similar problems that rdms go through untill an rdm learns to adapt, which is what rdm is about. Their investment on their character past level 37 (max /smn as a subjob currently) isn't as good as other jobs. The nice thing about summon magic is that it is free compaired to other magics. Do the quests, fight the avatar, get the summon. No paying 100k of gil for a spell. Don't know what you want to do but after level 40 a summoner enhances, cures, and sits down.

WOW did you think about what you JUST SAID! its free, OMG gettin level 6 fame in every nation is not free. I spent about 100k+ in fame because you have to do massive repeatables, and a few singles. huh ,and gettin high enough to kill the avatars in nothing huh? I guess Discordian, but you have NO idea what your talkin about( not tryin to be rude are negative) but your WAY off. And once a red mage can get phalanx they can melee as much as they want too.I MEAN, crap, a level 70+ red mage has soloed avatars :|:| the 2 classes at 40+ can not be compared at ALL.

Dunno, I personally wouldn't get max fame for the avatars, I'd get max fame so I can buy stuff cheaper and gain some items/gil while doing so. That does amount to 'free', ecspecially if you choose to do quests that are repeatable but cost no gil. Bastoks quadav helm comes to mind, you get 900 gil per and it raises your fame. Not to mention, when you fight the avatars you can choose 10k gil as your prize.

you must not understand the fame avatars require Afija, more than 60+ to sometimes 80+ needed PER nation with the completion of rare singles,
(lets stop the madness please, if you dont know, dont assume)

I got max bastok fame by lvl 40, the only thing I did 'out-of-the-ordinary' was stay up all night and do quests I hadn't completed. Otherwise it was pretty easy, short quests or else I could buy the item off of the AH(Quadav helms and silover nametags going for cheap
)
Now, if all you do is quest for avatars and try and do it very quickly, I can see that getting frustrating to the point where you pay gil. otherwise, I quest for the hell of it and get rather good fame.
Edit - I only stayed up all night to do quests once.

well when summoner was your main job your not gonna wait weeks and weeks and weeks to get the fame for your avatars, which is sorta like a wht mage, once they need a spell or teleport spell they do the fame or farm/craft the gil to get it ya know. there not gonna wait while still leveling to get a needed spell(unless they wanna be underskilled).

Norg fame isn't cheap - in fact, its quite expensive till you get to the point where you get Utsusemi: Ichi - selling it might make up some of your costs.

true, true very true, norg fame is costly, you end up paying more than what levethian is worth

Yeah, I swear, I spent more on fame than I ever did for armor - at least I won't need new spells, and my RSE for now is fine (I think) until I start AF. My mp is fine, don't need astral rings, will wait till 40 for electrum, so...
Anyone have any advice for AF 1? I'm at work, and bored...don't wanna go in the lab, it's a Friday~

back on topic yeah summoners are good. fenrir the new avatar, while i hear it is the hardest to get, gives evasion down (!!!!!!) any melee job or a ranger would do anything for evasion down every fightl.
