Path to being a dragoon, advice plz

I have just gotten to level 18 with my monk and after planing out my course of action, I came up with the following.
Raise a lvl 18 monk (easy to raise)
Sub the monk job and make Warror my main
Get warrior to level 30 and do dragoon extra job quest
Sub war and have Dragoon as my main job
Train to as high of a level as possible =P

Right now I don't have any aspiration to "try out" many jobs. My goals are straight foreward.
I WAS going to make a DRG/SAM, but after reading the post about the SAM job, I was dicuraged... a lot... (sleep.gif)

I suggest leveling thief at some point in there, not because you should 'try out' other jobs but because at some point you will need to farm (chain mail in a full set is 30kish (varies per server)) and level multiple weapons at once for the PT sense. (Leveling War I'd stick with polearm and a great axe. Or Polearm and a Sword/Shield.)

If you want to be a Dragoon, I wouldn't even bother leveling Polearm. You will cap Polearm in no time with Dragoon (I started with 0 skill can was capped at level 7 soloing). You only use one weapon with Dragoon so you really don't need to worry about it. Use whichever weapon you want with Warrior (I personally like Axe and Great Axe since no class but BST with Axe uses them anyways). Dragoon is a pretty cheap job so you don't need to worry about money much. At level 50 you will still only be paying less then 10k a weapon and most of the better armor you get is cheap (no heavy armor).

However, it is good to have more then one subjob, especially later on.

Thief is a lot closer to what it feels like being a Dragoon (except you don't do a lot of damage with regular hits). You don't generally want to get hit. You get a feel for hate control. Also Thieves won't normally be in many skill chains till level 33 and Viper Bite, and Dragoons aren't normally in skill chains because Polearms don't chain very well.

Just my thoughts on it. Some people may agree and others might not.

Last I checked, you can buy chain armor right off a vendor, though I guess it would vary with fame level.

Yeah. I just did a quick AH check on the prices for him. Body is usually around 16k, legs around 7k, then like 12k total for the other peices. But thats not the vendor. It's going to be different either way. The only annoying thing is you don't get to use that chainmail on Dragoon again, so you'll be toted back into a doublet.

As for the Polearm comment, that was for two reasons: To make sure he liked the weapon, and just to have the initial skills to pull off a WS at some of the lower levels. I like 1h axe also, helps a ton when leveling in Dunes (Smash Axe <3).

I wanted to be a Dragoon too >< But they're so popular and overdone on my server it makes me sad. Everyone keeps telling me to stop being a bitch and just get the quest done though. Only need that and Samurai and I've got all my jobs unlocked.. but bleh

It's still gonna run you that much or more (30k)

And, you might as well use spear as warrior. It's nice to be maxed each time you level.

I think thf is the more popular DRg sub though.

DRG

Job is cheap compared to other jobs... i will tell you that. Yeah you spend some money on

body and hand armor and of course lance. After I was 55, i grabbed a sword and a dagger and

leveled them as well just for fun.

I agree with the THF subjob being popular, but I

sub thf when i am farming gils. I have been using WAR as sub since day 1. Now when I get 60

DRG, I will sub my 48 SAM. Most ppl love SAM sub after the main is over 60.

What sam post are you talking about?

Don't forget to go all out

Accuracy and Dex ^^ (IMO anyways)

Money was not a problem for me as a dragoon. The AF

armor was a breeze to get. Warrior, Samurai, Thief are popular subs for the class.

i like armor thats suited to upping my stats while keeping my def at a ok level so

i probally spend more then a normal drg.. my current eqs cost me probally about 700k in the

end, but its worth it to me

For my suggestion if u want to Join up partys .. be a Pal/War or a Drk/WAr those i think are the best jobs for a War as subjob .... Paladin is thes best to get in partys with because every1 wants a good Tank..

First off, who is that girl in your sig banner?

Secondly, this isn't about DRKs and PLDs, its about DRGs. Sure, some may argue that DRK does better damage, and thats fine and dandy, I personally don't want to be a DRK because on my server they are very overdone.

If I am going to take a heavy melee job it will be either Dragoon or Paladin, and I heard DRG/RDM had some nice solo-bility, so I lean toward that monster if I do head into the DRG realm.

Aside from that, there is nothing wrong with DRG, except their abilities begin to twindle (Whewt! I am uber at dragon smitezoring, and a gymnist at that!).

I really like the AF (Kain from FF-IV was cool), and even if purple is the nationally reckognized color of homosexuality . . . all the more reason to be a Dragoon! Erm . . .

/em was defeated by typing too much.

If I were you after 18 I'd go thf/mnk and get drg then sub your thf. Elv miss ALOT, but if played correctly are very high damage chars. As an elv your most important stat to upgrade is dex, don't even bother with other stats, always get dex over anything. Acc = 2 dex, so once you get into the 50's you should start trying to get sniper rings, life belt, assualt earrings and anything else to get the most +acc possible. Thf sub helps with this alot, not to mention sneak+double will work very good for you from 30-49. Stick with your thf sub until you hit 60 on drg, then go back and lvl a sam up to 30. Thats as straight forward as you could possibly get. This is pretty much the route I'm on except I played whm to 30 then went drg and lvl'ed thf to use till 60 then lvl'ed sam to use at 60.

Everyone has pretty good advice, although I can offer something, if you're REALLY bored, and waiting for a group, do what I do and Skill Up your Sword, it's not anythign you'll ever use in any practical way, but it's nuts to see the Jump animations with a sword instead of a Polearm :crazy

Heh, my friend in my SPT (Level 51 DRG) just bought 2 sniper's rings. Man, that's already 800K right there.

DRGs aren't *that* cheap. It's how you want to equip it though. If you start off in Windy, however, you can spend CPs to get your goods instead of gils ...
