Ok last
night I get a invite from a JP party because well I have a few JP friends and I tend to do a
good job tanking when I'm with them so they pick me up pretty often for groups.
This party was all JP minus me and the RDM and it consisted of:
A ranger using a
gun (big damage)
A summoner with all avatars (Fenrir is soo nice ^^)
A blackmage
A
Dragoon
A Red mage
and me the Paladin
our pre fight buffs would be Gaurda's
blink and titans stoneskin.
Ranger pulls, I flash and voke off. Now here was my
problem
Flash = 3-4 missed hits
Blink = 2-3 more missed hits (I think)
Stoneskin = a few hits for 0 damage
Now what do I do? Cure spam only works if HP
is recovered and we had really big damage going down I was not getting hit until about half
way through the battle. If I wasn't able to cure and stack a good amount of hate and huge
damage was being delt. I had to use Voke and Flash whenever avial and cover is things got
too rough.
Now this really gave me a big hit on my confidence I just felt so
helpless.
Has anyone else had something like this happen? If so what did you do or
what would you do to have held hate better?

The most difficult time I have ever had holding hate...

Damn,
sounds like an excellent party, and I can see why you couldn't hold the hate. No, I
haven't had that problem, because I play a WHM. The problem I have is that the tank can't
hold hate, therefore I get a nice screwdriver on me, deleveling me(happened last night. i
cried).

It was a
damn good party I was just not preforming how I normally would. Any comments from my fellow
PLD's I'd like to know what you think?

I've had
a similar problem as Panzar. I haven't had the pleasure of getting group stoneskin just
yet (only 36, but I always group up w/ a SMN w/ the avatars).
When I first
experienced group-blink, I thought it was a blessing. Then I realized that it is great in
some cases... and can wreak havoc in other cases.
Sometimes I'll evade/parry/block
or blink-miss about 7 hits before the mob hits me. I am always very proud of having high
parry and shield skills... but not when I don't hold the hate.
From my experience, I
always try and keep my HP not close to full. This requires some cooperation of the local
WHM though. If you HP isn't full, you can get in a few Cure III's before your HP is full
and hopefully by then you'll be absorbing some damage.
If your HP is already full,
I usually take the benefit that if the mob is hitting one of the other melee, so what...
they lose blink and/or stoneskin and you toss them a heal to get the hate back to you. If
it goes after the mages, I toss up cover and step in the way.
You can "try"
using Flash a little later...
How ironic that having good parry/evade/block + blink
+ stoneskin would in the end impair our ability to hold hate

*note*
I'm not a pld but being a whm, I pay *lots* of attention to what my group's pally is
doing... That being said, the stuff I'm suggesting is just me throwing out ideas. Tell me
what you think.
First, the summoner "problem". Perhaps you could try standing
a little ways off before the fight so you *don't* get blink and stoneskin. Then you would
take hits as usual, and be able to cure yourself to control aggro. Heh, good luck explaining
that with the translator.
Second, rather than starting out with Flash so the mob is
missing hits, use Banish/Banish II as soon as you can target the mob. Then by the time that
is cast, you can provoke and start attacking. My reasoning for starting with this is so you
can cast while the mob is still getting to you and not worry about having the spell
interrupted. (i *know* these don't get you much aggro, but they at least get you a little
right from the start, and not having the mob miss at the start opens up more hate
'opportunities': curing yourself)
Third (but he was probably already doing this)
make sure the RDM keeps you refreshed so you have enough MP to Flash/Cure. You could also
suggest that the Summoner or Red Mage do not cure you unless you are below XXX hp or your
spell is getting interruped. All the Japanese parties I've been in tend to keep hp in the
white *at all times* but sometimes it's more advantageous to let the Paladin get down a
tiny bit more so he can throw a Cure 3/4 and keep aggro.
The bottom line is, don't
get discouraged, just try different things until you find something that works out.
Good
luck

My
stragedies for this situation would be to provoke first then flash. Flash make mobs miss so
it's a good idea to draw it to you first then blind it. The fact that he can't hit you
really peeves a guy out.
Throw in a shield bash if you honestly feel that you
haven't maintained a good hold on enmity. It's justa feeling thing so if you FEEL the
hold isn't good, shield bash (unless you're saving it on a mob weapon skill like Bomb
Toss). I say shield bash because Sentinel draws some hate on you and you don't have to be
next to a mob to do it.
Of course provoke every 30 seconds.
When the ranger
starts getting hit a lot (or anybody. I have a white mage who likes the Cure IV a lot and it
really screws up my aggro hold) be quick to use cover. It will assume it hit the player
you're covering and alleviate some hate. It is a damn good ability. When we do Double
Thrust - Sneak Attack + Trick Attack + Viper Bite - Freeze Magic Burst for 1015 dmg I really
need to cover the black mage and he knows. Cover is nice.
Of course it is always
important to throw in a Cure. Maybe not always a Cure III because a Cure II is effective as
well. But in my case the SATA+Viper Bite causes huge problems for my Dragon Knight b/c he's
the one getting Trick Attacked off of. So I time my Cures for that moment to get hate back
on me.
If I may add, I've noticed that hate holding at level 50 is really really
difficult. I assume that my friend Paladin told me is true. Once you get Holy at level 55 or
the first of many Gallant armor you will have hate 24/7/365.

Hmm... I
had problems like this at 20ish, but for a different reason. The WHM in my group kept me
cured at full, and the WAR in my group kept 'voking the baddie (I HATE fighting over main
tank).
I was a bit vindictive tho, and let him have a hit or two. Then I cured him.
Hate was mine again. This might not work for you, though. I dunno, I haven't been in the
50's yet.

I am a
American stationed in Japan, which usually means I get some Jp invites. Anyways, they set
the same way, I wasn't gettin hit. I basically did what others have already said: voke,
wait some then flash, and if i was worried banish. But it took me acouple of fights to
figure it out, it was wierd not getting hit and having that valuable cure to help with
keeping hate.

My method
- I don't pull, ever if I can help it. I have someone with out voke at all yank a baddie, a
ranger, a thf, a ninja maybe, depends... when the mob comes in, and I'm lucky enough to
have a second tank a thf with me, the second tank will voke, the thf will trick off me...
viola' I get the hate without hardly any effort to keep it there.
However if I
don't have those, I voke it right off the puller, if it takes the bait (and it usually
does) I just toss out a cure every few seconds... if it starts to stray and my voke isn't
up, use Flash on that mofo, it should come right back to you and be pissed as hell at that.
If THAT for some reason doesn't work, I'll use sentinal and cover, which mobs hate. By
then my voke is probably back up, so I'll use that as well... but typically all I might
have to do is use a voke once and a while and throw out flash once a fight, unless the blm
does some uber damage MB spell that does 1000000 damage or something insane, which btw, has
happened a few times. ^^

What i
usually do is Provoke the mob off the puller, then wait approximately 5-10 seconds to take a
fair beating. Then use flash and immediately use Cure III. And remeber, sentinel attracts
a fair ammount of hate so never forget to use it, same goes for shield bash.
