Reason
why I'm getting discouraged about playing a dragoon is because of what I hear about them
after 60. Are they really as bad as some say they are?
Dragoons after 60

Yes, DRG
suck after 60, that's why you never see them around. Their WS chain horribly and don't
even do that much damage compared to other jobs' weapon skills.

On the
other hand when you cast poison you get a pretty fat heal from your dragon (I think it is
poison) so if you sub the right job you can solo pretty tough mobs with nearly unlimited
heals using the proper magic regen items.

Any
spell will make your Wyvern use Heal Breath if you sub a mage class. Poison is the most
efficient since it costs the least MP. Your HP also has to be under 1/3 for it to work.

From what
I have heard they do good damage, but maybe not as much as a Drk or Rng...
You may
feel a little less discouraged after you get Penta Thrust and start poking things alot.
However you need to have very good accuracy to get the full use out of penta thrust since it
totally depends on how many times you hit, more than how much damage each hit is doing.

Well
even if I do feel a bit better 49-60 with pentathrust. After 60 if all that effort is for
nothing then I should stop now and switch to something else probably. I know rangers will
outdamage dragoons no matter what, but if dark knights do more than whats the point of
getting a dragoon. They also have spells to help out the party somewhat (the absorb stuff,
stuns etc).

You get
to wear the sexy purple armor?
And you can actually solo well with a Rdm sub.
Dragoons are just the epitemy of "cool"
If you are looking for something
oh so special to happen after 60, I dont think you will find it :
There isn't
really any gear over 60 that they get, and they will only get a little better each level
with the minor stat adjustments that they get.
If you are unsure, I would just get to
49, throw a few pentas see how you feel.
Then try a different class to level 30-40
and give dragoon a break, and see how you feel about them. RNG will cost you a buttload, so
you might try drk for fun. My friend just started Drk and is loving it over his Thf.
I havn't tried either drk or rng past lvl 5 so I really dont know how they "
feel" if you will. But everyone has different tastes, I may switch my self at Lvl 60,
just so I can be decked in Purple Sexiness Armor.
But if you want to be the best of
the best and do the most insane damage, Spend 100's of K on arrows and the most
ridiculously expensive gear and be Rng. Seeing a rng blast something with a Gun is just
cool

Dragoons
really aren't useless after 60 the reason you don't see that many of them is that Dragoons
along with Samurai and Ninja haven't been out as long as the other jobs (if I remember
correctly they came out at the same time as the NA release).
DRG in the only class
that can act with almost total impunity since they can shed their hate (DRK and RNG can
never spam weapon skills as safely as a DRG). A well equipped DRG will always out damage a
poorly equipped RNG (aka most of them) or DRK (such as the why bother upgrading AF1 even
though I am past level 50).
Penta Thrust can chain well in certain situations at
level 50 I could do 700-1300 damage as a Hume DRG/THF versus the 300 a DRK could do with
Berserk + Souleater + Last Resort going and the 450 a MNK could do on the rare occasions
where every hit in Raging Fist landed + Berserk (mostly saw 100-200).
It isn't like
DRG damage falls that far behind DRK and RNG in the long term. DRK hits harder a hit, but
has a longer delay and less accuracy. RNG hits very hard a hit, but even with all the
equipment money can buy they still have attrocious accuracy.
I know a few Paladins
that prefer Dragoons because they don't screw up hate and several Thieves who like them
when the group doesn't have a second tank.
I remember when I started out and figured
out how to do /sea all drg I noticed that almost all of them were below level 20 a week into
the NA release, considering almost no NA players are at 75, the fact most NIN, DRG, and SAM
didn't hit that high (even for a JP player who has a better chance of finding a group) till
recently isn't saying that it is a bad job, just that it hasn't been in the game for very
long. (The fact that all 3 expansion jobs were given armor pretty much at random doesn't
help, NIN didn't get doublet or scale, but they got chain SAM got just about everything but
Doublet and Mage, and DRG got doublet and scale but no chain which is odd since the Job
comes from San and is referred to as Dragon Knight a few times but can't wear the Knight
armor).
A bit long winded I guess, but just a point.

Dragoon got doublet, scale, and banded. Banded looks a little too disgusting, even on
Mithra, so I try to stick to Scale. Doublet? I use Battle Gloves, that's it.

Oh,
and the sexy purple armor is all to which I aspire. Past there, I will go Bard or something
if it slows down too much.

When you
use sneak/trick attack on multiple hit WS's does it count for all of them or just the 1st
hit?
I heard that the dragoon WS's after pentathrust are horrible, and eventually
pentathrust gets outdated compared to Guillotine, Sidewinder etc. I'm still not convinced
its worth playing dragoon after 60 :-/. Even if dark knights and dragoons end up hitting
for equal. Without the wyvern, it will put Dragoons down. Considering how fragile the
wyvern is...
. Dark knight's magic seems to be more useful for groups too. I want to do
great damage, but I don't have the $ for ranger and I hate being a caster. Not sure if
dragoons are what I'm looking for anymore

Stick
with it no matter what. The damage I do is only rivaled by a Ranger (whenever they can hit
the mob) with incredible accuracy bonuses. Dark Knights hit harder but only after using up
their Attack Buffs and I can still hit 1-2 times before they even land a shot (which usually
miss anyway). Dragoons are very reliable at high levels and don't require an insane amount
of money to maintain. Once you get your first lance at lvl 43, you'll see the difference
in your damage output.
Also, Dragoon's WS's are not dead after Penta. Vorpal
Thrust isn't the greatest WS I'll admit that, but Skewer is just downright insane.
To whoever said they can penta 700-1300 a ws, I'd like to see a screenshot of that
and the difficulty of the mob you were fighting. Personally I doubt you were able to deal
that much damage but ifyou were I'd like to see your equipment.

He
said he can Penta that much damage as a DRG/THF. Which means he was probably using Trick
and Sneak in combo with it. So I can believe that

It was a
VT Exoray at level 50. I actually found it odd there were still VT Exos since almost every
other one is tough. Keep in mind the range is based on TP since I always landed 4-5 hits 700
is 100% 1300 was 300%. That is adding my damage, the Gravitation skill chain, and the 60ish
damage the wyvern did with Breath Attack and it was stacked with Sneak Attack.
Weapon: Mythril Lance
Face: Nothing (I de-equipped my Steel Mask since it just
looks silly)
Body: Brigadine
Hand: Human RSE (+3 STR +3 DEX and some other stats)
Leg: Magic Cuissances
Feet: Steel Scale (not sure of the right name)
Earring: 2
Dodge Earrings
Waist: Royal Knight Belt
Ring: 2 Balance Rings

i
don't know much about drg lol cause i never had the rank to do it lol!!
i am currently
50drk/25thief and from my experiences i say drg is really good..
( seeing pentra thurst
is really coo lol )
your wondering why you don't do heavy dmg in 1 hit like drk do
..
thats b/c you guys have something drk doesn't have... a wyvern
dark knights
are fighter who Sacrifice a sense of self in the pursuit of Black mage magic and physical
poweres.
Dragoon are dragon warriors that have enchanced powers and have the ability
to summon a wyvern...... dragoons have another ability to perform jumping attacks that are
very useful in 1 hit k.o lol
i dunno if i made a good example to show that you that
should continue with drg to lvl 60-up, but You made it this far why give up now? once your
at lvl 60 you get ur sick af amor and what not.....
ps: drg/thief really good at
farming!!! having TH and Wyvern by ur side you can make fast 8k at lvl 35-up at batt.down
farming
tiger fangs from sabertooth tigers ^ ^

Sneak/
Trick on Penta only effects the first hit.
After 60 there really isn't all that much
to look forward to-- DRG still compete as much for PT space as SAM, MNK, DRK, etc. Some feel
there's only 15 levels left in the job so they push it to the cap. A lot of DRGs I competed
against went the same path as me and ended the job upon hitting 60 or so.
It was a
fun job, mind you that. Just it grew very tiresome for me-- not for the long PT waits, I had
a static.. just DRG grew boring after a while. Same routine over and over, 30k tnl, and to
the point where I would engage the target and leave the room or turn around and go back to
playing a console game on GCN or PS2. :|
Boredom is probably what stopped a lot of
DRGs if anything else.

Im not
here to shit on anyones ideas but this is my personal experience from being a dragoon. Im a
54drg/27war elvaan and ive dropped a bit of money in gear....i got 2 snipers rings, life
belt, valks mask. i have +23 accuracy and +35 when i use eyeball soup but i sorta prefer
chiefkabobs since the atk boost is pretty radical compared to 12 accuracy. But anyway right
now i land 4 outa 5 hits on penta avg and they are usually 200+ on shit like crabs/beetles
since thats mostly what u xp off of from 45 to 57 but on basically anything else thats not
bones it can be upwards of 845 (highest hit on vt bat). From what ive seen most of the adv
jobs are pretty balanced in how they are setup.....u gotta have money or ur gonna suck. All
adv jobs blow unless u got cash and the only reason ppl think thieves are awesome is cuz any
gimp thief can do a sneak/trick/viper for 480 every other fight when a drg/war with some
pretty nice shit can throw down about 600 in ws dmg alone in a fight.....and thats being
pretty modest most of the time. As far as Sam/Drk/Rng they are only gonna be better than u
if they got better gear...its the only way. If ur crying cuz dragoon sucks it aint the job
its you....farm harder.
