Bump. Very good information.
I just started soloing bombs in Ifrit's last week because I was tired of the crappy parties I kept getting. At first I was nervous about it because I knew I would die if I screwed up and didn't get Carby back up in time. But after doing it a few times, it's almost second nature to me now.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v413/Charlo0oki/Ifrits.bmp
(Sorry, I couldn't save as .jpg w/o screwing up the colors. Only had mspaint here. Sorry for the size as well.)
Basically my strategy is to pull a bomb towards the zone area and go to each recast position and press my Carbuncle macro until I would resummon (meaning old Carb died).
My route: I/J-9 > K-8 > I/J-7 > K-8 > I/J-9 etc
I-6 works, but it's best to only use this spot if you're fighting that bomb or just killed it. No sense taking unneccessary risks for magic aggro.
When running from position to position, stay about 3-4 steps behind Carbuncle when he runs up to make sure he gets aggro before the bomb can hit you as it will hurt (especially when Double Attack goes off). And as mentioned before, if you get hit, stop and let Carb get hate and if in serious danger, don't hesitate to zone.
So far I've soloed about 7k which accounted for the last parts of my last 2 levels (5k for 56 and 2k for 57) and have only died once due to a stupid bat since I didn't noticed Sneak was wearing.
At 55 and 56, exp was 250 > 300 > 312 when I managed to get Chain 2s.
Notes:
-Have an Elemental Spirit macro. There will be times when the Bomb will have berserked alot and will tear through Carb before you're able to recast. At these times, it's important to get anything out in order to get to safety.
-Bring Pickaxes. In the F-9 area and in the cave by it, there are (at least) 2 Mining Spots. No reason not to make easy money while you're here. Consequently, I missed those 2 on my first visit there:( I now have a stack of them for when I go out again.

Nice map. I woulda done one myself but its been awhile since I last soloed in Ifrits Cauldron.
If you feel experienced enough, you can also venture into the tunnel area further on from B detailed in the map (near the crater ledge area) The risk of being nearer to the bombs is slightly higher, but no bats will pop there.. so its a good thing. (also a few coffer pop spots lol) This area is also advisable for BSTs who like to solo bombs cos there are a few monkeys around to charm

i have a question. i have been soloing in the cauldren for about 25-30k xp so far, and i found something to be very annoying.
when soloing a bomb, it can die on my 2nd or 3rd carby. however, there will be some bombs, that i actually have to solo so long that it dies by carby. it is almost 30-40 summons to kill a bomb that way. i didnt know if i was doing something wrong, since sometimes i will get a chain, and others i will spend 20-25min killing a single bomb.
any help would be greatly appriciated

Thats where your luck comes in.. Whether the bomb "chooses" to Self-Destruct or not is completely at random as long as it has enough TP to do a ws.
I once believed that if you recently zone into that area and kill bombs, they blow up faster.. but its hard to tell if theres much truth in that. (I used to 'zone' into pol after the end of a chain when i was fighting Akselloaks lol)

ok
i have this theory that if i stay close to a bomb for long enough during the first 2 carbies, he decides to blow up more often since there are 2 enemies in the local area to hit with a self-destruct.
once again, only a theory that i am still testing. just gets hard after a berserk or 2 to stay near for long and still have enough time to run away and re-summon.

Cool, I might do this to get 61 and some change. Snolls in Ulgerand Range?

another question.
snolls in Ulgerrland, their thermo-detonation, is that fire or ice based?
oh ya, is it possible to go there at 59 or 60? i notice my kills are starting to really lack in xp. im down to 188 and 200 on some. im sure at 60 it will get worse (im 59)
thanks.

Can I solo the Bombs in Ifrit's Culdron at level 54? I was messing with them earlier before going to find the ??? for Hojo: Ichi. It seemed doable. Just need some reassurance it is or isn't. Thanks.

snolls are ice-based, so u'd be casting buffs like Barblizzara..
54 at Ifrit's Cauldron is possible but slightly risky. Chances of your Carby dying before recast timer is up is high.. so it'll be wise to set a macro for IceSpirit or whichever you can reduce cost with using a staff. Your Carby will also miss the Bomb a fair bit.. so it'll take longer to gain tp => blow up

Where if at all should I go to solo at my level? And when is optimal for Ifrit's Cauldron?

forgot my other one,
what is the minimum level for xp in the U. range? 61 needed, or can a 60 go?

I'd recommend the minimum level for Ifrit's Cauldron to be 56, and for Uleguerand Range.. well 61 should do ok. Snolls are generally slightly weaker than Bombs in terms of physical attack (partly cos they do Berserk less) so they're more manageable if you get aggro.

I have tried hellmines and I noticed that basically you are screwed if it hasn't blown up by the 5th or 6th carby since you have to keep running around obstacles in the serket room. The hellmines rarely blow up from my experience and I've lost more XP than gained. I went to Ifrit's cauldron at lvl 52 because I thought, "What the hay, if I die I die... I'm not sitting around jeuno for hours waiting for party." I solo'd 1k XP in 10 mins off of bombs and got a coffer key too. So 52 is doable. In fact, I even took down the seek flag and put anon up because 1k/10 minutes is way faster than what I usually get in parties anymore :3

Lol.. good for you..
I'd like to make an amendment note tho.. I was looking through the JP Vana'diel World Report, and I noticed that it indicates Snolls are around the same level as Volcanic Gases (unlike I had previously discovered.. strangely) So.. I'd say you can go for Snolls at the same level as Volcanic Gases now..
The thing reads Snolls 62-65, and Volcanic Gas 62-68

I noticed something interesting when I went back a second time to solo tonight. The bombs would blow up after about 2-3 carbys. They would only blow up if it was light, dark, or firesday. Maybe the day also has something to do with their self-destruct. Every other day they would just keep berserking til I finally couldn't get a summon out fast enough and would have to zone or die. I know they can blow up on other days, I'm just saying that the self-desrtuct rate might be higher on those days for some reason.

I'm really excited about getting to level 51, but are there any places to solo before then?

i was really close to a hypothermal combustion, and i wasnt hurt.... is it an AOE? or is it a smaller radious then the normal bombs?
#58
Posted 04 April 2005 - 04:49 AM
Seems to be smaller radius. I had alot of stubborn Snolls that refused to explode. :/

i myself feel the hypothermal combustion range is smaller.. its about as big as the cold wave aoe range

I tried this today in Ul. Range on the Moskolopos there. The camp is pretty easy, since no aggro unless you are pulling without sneak or are stupid enough to run infront of a dinosaur... anyways, i got 300 xp/fight, 360 at chain 1.It seems really good but you find out its really determined by luck. Sometimes they would take 20-25 carbys to explode, sometimes they exploded on the pulling carby....
I died about 4 times tho ; ; mainly because i was stupid enough to wear my AF Horn and Doublet.. which give, in total, -5 Enmity for avatar, while I only have -4
