i've heard drk/sam generate a lot of hate and are pretty bad, i'm going to stick with war and maybe go thf after a while

I'm quite curious about this as well. My boyfriend is going to be playng the game again, and has a lvl27 THF, and a MNK (leveled enough to max sub for THF, but I'm not sure what level it is) with no other jobs leveled. He has expressed interest in becoming a DRK when THF hits 30 (mostly from me talking him into it, I think he'd love DRK ^^) but he doesn't want to go back and level a WAR to sub on it (who would?). He doesn't get to play often, so it would be a waste for him to level another job just to sub on his new job.

So does DRK/THF work from the beginning?

well so far the only thing i've heard is that it only works over 60, i'm not sure when thf gets sneak attack and trick attack but i know that would play a major role in it, the thf dex boost really helps, but as far as i know war is best til 60 but i guess thf might work at low levels too

Parties will demand he sub WAR on his DRK until his DRK hits 20 or 30 because of Provoke. PLDs at low levels are not able to keep hate well due to the fact that at such low levels, a lot of melee classes can tank and therefore "Voke Passing" is a must unless you are xp'ing off of worms and have a party full of mages. O.O At low levels, DRKs are on almost equal footing with PLDs in tanking and he should not neglect that fact. THF sub is useless on DRK at low levels (pre-30s) because there isn't a useful ability like other job classes have with a level 5 subjob (MNK w/ Boost, WAR w/ Provoke). Tell him don't be lazy. Only takes an hour TOPS to level WAR to 5.

Most parties would also like a DRK with a properly leveled WAR sub well into the 50s, because Berserk > Sneak Attack in my opinion for post-30s play. (You do have Last Resort with a THF subbed, but that's only 30s duration with a 5 minute recast and only gives 10% to attack for a 10% loss to defense versus Berserk which gives you a 25% boost to attack for a loss of 25% in defense and a 3 min duration on a 5 min recast and LR is a soft voke which can screw up hate management if it's already on the edge mid-battle).

A subjob THF shines at post-60s play because of hate management, but that is the sole reason that I can think of.

Not sure what benefits a subjob DRG would bring to the table seeing that the only real hate shredder is Super Jump, which can't be gained as a subjob unless SE raises the level cap really high.

I want to expand on anyone that suggests that a NIN/WAR would nullify the need for her BF to sub WAR at low levels. First of all, not many low level NINs actually do the Usesemi Quest (Must have high Tenshodo Fame to acquire). Secondly, not many NIN/WAR would be available to PT with.

Even if he finds one and makes a SPT, long recast of Usesemi:Ichi (It absorbs 3 attacks before dissipating although it can be stacked, the recast time doesn't allow multiple stacking in-battle) makes it near impossible unless you have a 2nd voker. How this works is this:

NIN/WAR (Casts before battle)
=> Vokes
=>Usesemi Dissipates
WAR or 2nd /WAR
=> Vokes
NIN/WAR (Recasts)
=> Vokes

>> Repeat as many times as necessary.

Until Usesemi:Ni is acquired or you fight monsters with high delay attacks, this is really the only option to tank sucessfully as a NIN/WAR, unless you are an anal-retentive "Usesemi expert." ;p Not to mention, stacks of blink powder can be consumed every time a NIN/WAR parties (esp if it's a good party) and that can be very costly to a low-level blink tank.

In this scenario, you need /WAR if there isn't another main WAR or any other /WAR. So I highly suggest your BF to level up WAR to at least 5 (Don't blame me if he gets stoned and cursed at for not properly leveling his WAR subbed when his DRK is 12+ though ...) Better to be safe than sorry ...

I guess I'll have to PL him a WAR to 15 I'll ask him about it. I'm NOT going to let him run aorund with a lvl5 WAR sub until 30 ;p He's not lazy, he doesn't have time, works days, has night classes at the university.

You can go DRK/WAR at level 60+ too. Nothing wrong with it.

There should be a sticky on these kinds of questions. Some kind of a FAQ would suffice , this or "which race is the best" question always comes up.
