Question on Raising Guard...

Howdy. I'm a 23 MNK/10 WAR (Been playing since Jan. Would be higher levelled, but I wanted to go off and work on trade skills). I've read up on Guard somewhat, and I am having problems raising it.

I am in Qufim, amid a bunch of PS2 folk who don't know much at all about FFXI... I find myself having to Tank since the WAR's I've been with sometimes don't provoke quickly enough, if at all. My Guard recently hit 20, which is nice. It gains in bursts of .3-.5 usually. But I read on some forum about some fella who had his around 80, claiming he was about lev 40 or so. Now, MNK's move away from being primary tanks sometimes, but their HP makes a nice cusion to fall back onto in case they have to take that role into their hands. I want to get my guard to a high level and keep it somewhat close to my Hand to Hand and Evasion skills, which I cap every level. Is guard something I just need to set aside sometime and work it up, or is there no need to do so? I realize it is a very handy skill. But raising it is quite difficult. Do I need to raise it against weaker creatures before it raises like evasion does on these higher-lev mobs?

I think guard is one of those you just let go on its own, kind of like shield and parry skills for warriors etc. Im level 50 and just got guard to 80-90.

You gotta be getting hit for it to rise so just go out and farm a lot

Kind of how I got it to 22 (Now its 22). Farmed for Stinging Sophie to get the occasional stinger for some quick cash. But she's overcamped now, from what I hear. Influx of PS2'ers and all X_x

Guess I'll let it go, then. Maybe it'll start gaining quicker once levels get longer.

I'm level 36 (or 35, depending on how recently I've de-leveled in my farming and screwing around) and my guard just hit 70 (still about 40 points below the cap). I solo quite a bit and end up tanking a fair bit. It's a shame you can't raise Guard in other classes, such as Paladin or Warrior when you are more often called upon to tank. Ultimately, though, as Monks aren't meant to be tanks and don't do so often, your guard skill will rise to match your solo'ing more than anything else.

yup just find a weak mob, hit it once, and let it go nuts.

A MNK should never be tanking at the higher levels anyways (Unless they have the -perfect- set of equipment for it and know what they're doing, but even then, a PLD is better) so you'll have trouble raising it later. I'm Lv. 62 SAM and my Parry skill (Which SAM have A- in, mind you) is only 100... /cry

Hey, how would you guys recommend a mnk/thf raise his gaurd skill, seeing as I'm a mnk/thf i never get to tank (or pull for some reason), I currently have it at 15 and my level is 23!!! Is there some god way of raising it that i dont know about or do have to go solo some really weak creature and let it sit??

Why not try pulling for an exp party, the mob usually get a hit or 2 before the tank realize that something is taking your HP down.

Be kind to thief later on, and be a trick partner. This would cuz the mob to hit you once or twice before the tank can get the hate back.

I have max evasion as a SAM thanks to those tanks tongue.gif

Best way i have yet seen to raise Guard and Parry skill is pretty simple. Take off all armor sub ninja, dual weild 2 weak clubs, and get a rdm or whm friend with Blm sub to tag along with u. Then go fight Yagudo Sentinels, they will use Mnk 2hr on u raising ur skills at a decent rate. If things look bad have ur friend cast escape. Or just go fight mobs like Mandroga's or Hare's that hit fast.

From what I have seen (and do) to raise my guard is just by solo farming weak prey.

Level 61, and my skill is at 105. Cap is around 190 at my level from what I've read. I've started to pull hate a lot more and my Evasion and Guard skills go up pretty fast. Evasion I've never had a problem with capping, but Guard is obviously another story.
