Beastmasters, I believe, are more skilled with the one-handed axe. The reason you see so many running around with a scythe is because 1H axe sucks for skillchaining. I think the common consensus is to use an axe while solo'ing, but in a party situation keep the scythe leveled up for skillchaining.
This, however, is only what I've been told.

BST use axe because it's A grade weapon, where Scythe is B grade, so your weapon lvl will ultimately be higher as axe. Plus with axe you get access to all weaponskills, but Scythe, we only get a few because some of the others are particular to DRK. Also with axe you get to use a shield, which is nice for added protection.
If you can, try to lvl up both. It's not too hard to do so each lvl.

I think axe is MUCH better, and I don't agree with the renkei thing. I love having someone with a 1h Axe because it's really easy for me to chain with them with either dagger or katana. Chances are the ones you see with scythes are wielding them because they were DRKs at one point and have the skill high, which gives an added bonus.
It's also a good idea to plan out what you want to do and your weapons based on that. If you're subbing BST, then it's better to go with the weapon of your main to get an added bonus to aid early leveling of your main later. If BST can't wield it, then it's best to use a weapon that you already have skill in from the original thirty levels to aid early leveling with BST. When soloing, you'll find that nothing really raises your weapon skill, since it has to be at least DC High Def and even that will raise it like half a point ever battle. Having your skill capped from a previous job will REALLY help up to where you start partying in the Maze or Dangruf Wadi or La Theine.
If you want to main BST though, you really have to go 1H Axe sooner or later. What you can do is this: Use another high level job that can wield 1H Axe and get the lowest level one availiable. Then go out and find something maybe 10 levels lower than you, but still IT to a lvl 1 (or whatever level the weapon is). Fight. You won't hit a lot, but when you do your skill will go up .5 points. It'll be raised in no time. Once it's up to 30, you can switch to your lvl 1 BST and solo up to 10 np, and even get the second WS before normal. Then go and party or whatever.
Don't underestimate the skill caps and weapon affinities that jobs have though. A difference in five or ten points can REALLY change things. For example, WAR is grade A in axe, but NOT in sword, and as a result my THF (grade A in dagger) got Gust Slash two levels before any WAR got Burning Blade, and got Shadowstitch LONG before anyone got Red Lotus (I suspect that Red Lotus is lvl 75 and Shadowstitch is 70, but they didn't get it till I was capped at 81-83). Also, your accuracy is largely affected by a few points one way or the other.
