I am now a lvl 13 MNK. While I enjoy being a MNK, I hear really bad stories. I hear no good parties want MNK's. I also have the Strategy Guide and have talked to others and they say that MNK makes for a poor subjob. I really do not want to be a MNK for my whole career and was wondering what your opinions on this matter were. I would love to become an Advanced Job when I get the choice, but I really want to be a nuker, especially a RNG. I fear this won't work at all with a MNK sub, but give me your opinions and your personal stories on weird job mixes...

MNK sucks as a subjob for RNG.
Anyways MNK is a pretty heavy damage dealer at higher levels with all the haste they get and all the attacks they could get in each round.

Monks are a solid main job choice. If you're looking to switch to an elite job later, then monk may not be your cup of tea (mistake I made), since Monk sub is kinda worthless most of the time. As far as the "horror stories" of monks, it's the same thing that you hear from almost any damage class. Around level 30 and beyond, there are so many solid damage dealing classes available (DRKs, SAMs, DRGs, occasional WARs, THFs AND MNKs), finding a party that needs another damage dealer can be a hassle. If you can try to form your own parties, you'll have better success.
Check the DRK forum if you don't believe me

mm monk. Its an awesome class. I was helping a friend get his subjob skull at lvl 35, and a JP monk asked i we needed help. We said yes and he was killing the ghouls in 4 hits or so, not to mention haste. Monk is a very solid job indeed.
edit : he had full AF on ... his lvl was hidden though.

Tarutaru Monks are an odd breed, but not nearly as bad as people think. Like a Galka White Mage, it just forces the player to be that much better.
That being said, Monk is a valid subjob for exactly two jobs, in my experience: Warrior and Thief. Warrior has all the hate control it needs, so the VIT boost, HP boost, and effects like Counterattack and Dodge are an appreciable help, if not the best support job for them. Thieves should only sub Monk when they are using Hand-to-hand weapons (and there are some good status-effect ones out there that are only THF/NIN/DRK).
It's an incredibly rewarding class, in my opinion. I can solo better than some jobs 10 levels above me (that or the people I've watched are incredibly sucky players), which makes me a farming machine with Thief subbed. The damage output is tremendous. But if you're looking to go with an advanced job, you may as well train Monk long enough to serve as support for Warrior and take Warrior to the point that you can get an advanced job.
