It's official: rabbit mantles suck. I'm currently stuck at leathercrafting 4 because rabbit hides have reached an all-time stupid high on our server at 3k a stack for a pair of mantles that wouldn't sell for 100 gil a pop. Now I'm used to gritting my teeth and biting the bullet on suckass stages like these on other crafts, but I figure if I can weasel my way past bonecrafting and its waste-of-gil bone arrowheads by making fly lures, I can weasel my way past rabbit mantles by making sure that leathercrafting is a sub for some other recipe. The problem is, other than iron cuisses, mittens, and subligaria (none of which sell very well), I'm not sure what other crafts use leather as a sub. Suggestions - or have I just answered my own question?

Farm the hides, they drop at a good rate. Or check the Leathercraft guild, they might be cheaper there, not sure.

Guild's camped like mad, really; rabbit hides are gone in less than a second after the shop opens. Of all the crafts, leathercrafting is the one I least look forward to levelling.

lol kabbalah, farm them. kill the rabbits in w/east ronfaure. took me about 2hrs to get through the rabbit mantle lvls. also i dont know why 3k a stack a prob for a 60pld should be. go farming in jugner forest, and sell all the beetle jaws/elemental drops. 20k+ an hour is easy, 40k+ with th

The mantles need five hides for one synth. Camping the guild means you only get two synths per game day, IF you even manage to snag 'em, which is a big if.

Farming them is nearly as bad. You'd need about 30 stacks of rabbit hides to cover the gap that a lot of "guides" tell you to do, and the AH prices are absolutely inexcusable.

I clawed through three levels of mantles before I said "Screw it" and started working on Solea a couple levels earlier than I should've.

I took Woodwork to 45 and none of the synths from those early levels were as annoying as rabbit mantles were for leathercrafting. Hated it.

Then just wait until you get to lower 50's you have to basically do the same and make Himantes..which take a lizard cesti and raptor skin.

But lizard cesti are never in and you have to make em yourself. And raptor hides are 3-5k on Asura and never on AH...glad I can make tiger leather now.

If it's too expensive for you, you should stop crafting now as it'll only get worse as you go higher up. Also the path a guide mentions isn't the only/absolute path that you need to take. If you're able to do research, there ARE other paths you can take to skillup that might be better for you. You just have to look for it.

You might be able to solo Yowie as SAM/NIN or RNG/NIN cani. I'm not really positive though.

Oh, I think I found a way around it. I can either level Bonecrafting or Smithing. I want to level smithing, but right now, it seems that bonecrafting would be the more economical choice.

FARM, easy as shit, or get a BLM friend to gather the entire zone, and 'ga them all to shit woo million of hides all for you!

Leathercraft is getting more and more expensive... I'm on Wyvern Skins right now which are up to 40K each... 90-95 has cost me roughly 10M and 95>100 is looking to cost me roughly 10M more.. not bad, but could be better

I wonder how many rabbit mantles you can purchase at the guild? Hmmm... If you could buy a lot of them, then toss in a lightning crystal, you could possibly have a few extra hides to "remake" some mantles. This would also give you a very low chance at skilling up while desynthing.

I did leathercraft from 11->13 bridging on leather belt desynths only. You might be able to do something similar with rabbit mantles.

the thing is about himantes, farm a lot opf lizard skins in dunes, go to npc shop in sandy, buy cesti, make lizzy, cesti, lizzy and send all those lizard cesti to your crafting mule, then when your at 50s and rdy for himantes, u farm raptor skins, and u have all the lizard cesti u need

damn pyros, why didnt you say that earlier? i npc all my lizard cesti ><. oh and yeah, its all about farming. i farmed 2 nights and made 220k just with rams (without th mnk/rng style XD). then i farmed even more for the waistbelt and ram mantle ingridieants and finally, i lvl from 35-42 in 2 days with only spending 200k. but now its seems to get realy expensive and posts like blights allready give me nightmares

lvl 80 leather here, i didn't do rabit mantles or any synth invovled with raptor skin (stupidly expensive/ never on ah) and i've learnt to know when to just npc crafts and take a loss.

You've pretty much nailed it right on the head. It's not that I can't handle the cost - I've taken two crafts into the high 50-60s so far - but that the recommended synth (rabbit mantles) is just such an incredible waste of time, gil, energy. It's just not worth it.
