If you avoid silent oil like the plague, Alchemy is profitable 0-60. You just have to get cooking to ~ 10 or so (easy enough).

Hard to give a specific number Trixie, all you need to do is look at the recipes and follow the path that you wish to invest in. If you do farm most of your items, it should be really easy.

Some tips to start off,

•Learn who sells what from all the regions. That will be a big money saver. ffxi.somepage.com as a good search engine.
•Never Buy Items from the Jeuno AH. Never, never, never. Paying 2K for a stack of Rock Salt is just stupid.
•Learn what other crafts you will need to lvl with alchemy. For instance, some smithing skills are required to synth certain alchemy items, such as bullets, bolt heads and other stuff. Other crafts are also needed, but try aiming at the important ones.
