A beginners(ish) guide to whm. (always in progress!)

Read the title, it's a beginner's guide. You'll notice that most of the advice etc is for a starting whm, there's not so much about endgame in there, just more of a "what to expect" if you do level it past 37. Thanks for the ideas, but the guide is long enough XD If I add to it I will have to have it published as a book >.>

Also, if anyone has the time to compile a list of the new equip that is beneficial to whms I'll add it to the guide and credit you for it smile.gif I would do it myself but I don't have the time ; ;

Key things for WHM is MP Regen/Regain - Cure Potency - Regen Potency - MP - HP - Whatever else.
It isn't that difficult.

Any job can take up a cheap craft and turn it into gil.I started with alchemy...how hard is it to kill bees,fish yellow globes and kill rabbits...lol .All you gotta do is put a bit of time into a craft and you will see the gils flowing in.As white mage i find that mining and fishing are crazy gil if you can smelt as you dig and split as you catch.

When I /SMN i use this earring. The latent effect is activated simply by subbing SMN. biggrin.gif

This is a good guide. It's very difficult to try explaining everything you have to consider for being a white mage all in one place.

If there's one thing I'd suggest, it would be to clarify the racial choices a little.

There are subtle, but significant differences with racial stats, even at level 75. While a white mage tends to focus on mp for their frequent use of Cure 1 through 4, you still need to pay attention to a few other things.

For example, both mnd and vit significantly affect the strength Cure 5. Health and vit play a part in survivability. Mnd is important for enfeebles (not so important at 75), divine magic, and stoneskin (which is very important at 75). And health affects the strength of Martyr and Devotion.

While the distinct advantage of being a Tarutaru is mp (which is probably the one and only reason to use that race), you should point that out their worst hp will always be a problem, and that when they get to 75, they'll have the worst mnd score of all races (tied with Mithra). They also have the lowest vit (tied with Mithra). While Taru are the best at sustained curing (and casting cure spells is what white mages spend most of their time doing), they have the worst survival rate, the weakest Cure 5 (tied with Mithra), the weakest Devotion and Martyr, and the least potent enfeebles and divine magic (tied with Mithra). With low mnd, a Taru also needs to take care in getting enough mnd gear to cap Stoneskin, which is doubly important to Tarutarus considering their low health.

For Mithra, while they have the same health and mp as Humes, they share the Taru's fate in having the worst mnd and vit scores of all the races at level 75. In that respect, Mithra white mages are like Taru that have given up some mp for hp. You're probably better off choosing a Taru if you like mp, or a Hume for stronger mnd and vit scores if you're choosing a race for a new white mage character. Nevertheless, I can say from personal experience that Mithra white mages can still do the job just fine, despite arguably being the weakest race for the job.

Humes, in my opinion, may well be the best race for white mage just because they are so well-rounded. They have the third best health (tied with Mithra), the second best mp pool (tied with Mithra), the second best mnd (tied with Galka), and the third best vit. While they aren't the best at any one thing, more importantly, they aren't the worst. White mage is one job where being well-rounded to avoid deficiencies is a good thing. This makes Humes very flexible in which stats they'd like to improve on instead of being forced into focusing on improving only certain stats.

Elvaan have the best mnd scores, and their health and vit are second only to Galka. Judging from the white mage AF quests being based in San D'Oria, SE seems to feel that Elvaan are the top race for white mage (and with good reason). But, the problem that will always plague Elvaan is their second worst mp. You can get gear to give a well equipped Elvaan white mage as much mp as a naked Taru white mage, but there's no way they can ever surpass even a decently equipped Taru white mage. At level 75 a naked Taru naturally has over 300 more mp than a naked Elvaan (304 to be exact). That said, they can get enough mp gear so that it's not really an issue. With mp taken care of, Elvaan have the best Cure 5, the most potent enfeebles and divine magic, and the second best Devotion and Martyr.

A Galka white mage is often underestimated. Having the worst mp will make playing the game for the first time as a Galka white mage oppressively challenging. But with the right gear, Galka can make up for their lack of mp so that it's never an issue. With their worst mp aside, Galka have the second best mnd (tied with humes), the best vit, and the best health. They have the second strongest Cure 5, the second strongest enfeebles (tied with humes), the strongest Devotion and Martyr, and they have the best chance to live whenever they're hit. A live mage is always more productive than a dead one.

So, to sum up...

Tarutarus are best at uninterupted curing without resting. Galka are best at Devotion, Martyr, and staying alive. Elvaan are best at using Cure 5, enfeebling spells, and divine magic. Humes are well-rounded and don't have any deficiencies. And finally, Mithra are best at looking cute :love

Somtimes, my cures don't seem to do max power. For instance, in a party, I would cast Curaga I: 4 of my members would get 112 HP, while the other 2 only get 100 HP. I thought curaga should be the same for all members when it is casted. Another instance is when I cast Cure III, the target member only gets 211 HP instead of 235 HP. In both cases, I know the members are not close to full HP, so I know I am not topping them out. I also checked to make sure it wasn't darksday.
