Let me try to do my part to make Valkurm dunes ninja's a little more tolerable.

QUOTE (Mgirardi)
DISCLAIMER: Only plan on doing ninja if you have money, or can make money. It is not a good first job because you will not always have what you need to xp even. It isn't like pld where you grab food and head out. Grab your tools, grab your food, grab your echo drops.
This is from experience, I got war to 30 and tested out some jobs and went with nin... I had a hard time around mid levels for gear and tools, but eventually got going well. It is one of the most rewarding jobs out there. No other job I can think of can break off a VT mob from a party and solo it either completely or until the party gets back on its feet and can help out again.

For any simple questions not answered in this sticky, please use the search button or even ask here.

Also, Ninja is by far as hard as this game gets. I'd go as far as say it's the only job that's actually very difficult If you can't handle it, level PLD.

2008 Disclaimer: Just kidding PLDs... kinda.

Might as well start with race eh? Stats arent VERY important, but they are noticeable at times. HP is usually the most important stat. Gear > Race in most cases. For the most part however, stats are useless. Ok, not totally useless. STR is nice at higher levels for pumping out Epeen Jins. The DEX/AGI difference between races might very rarely save you from missing or not evading a hit. VIT might VERY VERY rarely save your life, and over time has a slight difference on damage taken depending on your race. CHR does not effect enmity, and any race can be a NIN/BLM (although INT for this combo is one of the few cases where stats make a difference). MND/INT might cause you to occasionally resist an enfeeble, but chances are if an exp mob wants to enfeeble you, you're getting enfeebled.

The reason I bolded stats are useless is because for the most part they don't make a difference, and people like bolded words it seems.

Mithra- A great race for ninja, they have great DEX and AGI, but lack str. The str problem doesnt hurt them all that much.

Galka -Arguably the best race for end game tanking. Usually when it comes down to it, HP can a major deciding factor on whether you wipe or survive. They have great VIT and decent str, and their slightly below average AGI doesnt hurt them that much. But who wants to be a giant lizard guy?

Hume- A good mix of everything, and decent HP. They have the same HP as mithra and have more str, but slightly less agi and dex. Hume or Mithra ninja, you wont notice much difference.

Elvaan - Also one of the best races for ninja because of their high HP and decent VIT, their below average dex and agi doesnt hurt them much.

Tarutaru - Probably the most dangerous race to play ninja as, because they have about 300 less hp at 75 then other races, which really hurts them sometimes. They can still do the job though if enough work and skill is put behind it. They are definately the coolest looking race. They are the best nin/blm, and have been proven effective in certain situations (usually not exp), but you must have a LOT of money to put into gear (HQ staves etc).

Suggested food. You can try what you like and your playstyle of nin will decide what food you will be using. Really though, playstyle is a pretty loose term and there's two playstyles for NIN. Gimp, and effective. What I should say is that depending on what mob you're fighting, you might want more ACC or ATT. Here are my suggestions:

-

Navarin

Does not Stack
This item is Food that lasts 3 hours.
Auction House: Food - Meals - Meat & Eggs
Slot: Inventory
HP: 20 STR: 3 AGI: 1 INT: -1
Attack: 27%
Evasion: 5

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=2748

I used to use this when I was leveling ninja in kuftal, its good because of the +5 eva and hp bonuses, and still provides you with str and attack. Pretty cheap too, this will slightly help you with evading, and makes that tiresome crab grind all the more easier

-

Meat Chiefkabob

8

[sea]Stacks to: 12
This item is Food that lasts 60 min.
Slot: Inventory
STR: 5 VIT: -1 AGI: 2 INT: -2 CHR: 1
Attack: 26%
Jobs: ALL
Races: ALL[/sea]

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=2734

Used to be the most commonly used food. It provides high attack and STR and even gives a nice AGI bonus. Don't let the -VIT scare ya, thats nothing. It's pretty good for low levels like valkurm and qufim.

-

Sole Sushi

Description: Sliced, raw sole served on a small portion of sweet vinegar rice--a popular dish in the Eastern empire.
Slot: Inventory
Type: Food
Races: All
Food Duration: 30 minutes
Stackable: 12
Auction House Category: Food / Meals / Seafood
Affects:
HP +20
Strength +5
Dexterity +6
Resist Sleep
Accuracy +15%
Ranged Accuracy

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=5640 (Alla hasnt updated the food info from the recent patch, but scroll down on the posts for info.)

These are amazing at any level, although they are more expensive then other foods. These are really helpful if your having trouble hitting, but if your having no trouble hitting, I recommend attack food. If you're in an exp pt situation, go for Dorado.

Dorado Sushi

Stacks to: 12
This item is Food that lasts 30 min.
Auction House: Food - Meals - Seafood
Slot: Inventory
DEX: 5
Accuracy: 15%
Enmity: 3
Ranged Accuracy: 15%
Resist Sleep
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=8984

Nice because of the small Enmity bonus. Great food to use at the lower levels, and even at 75. Up to you whether you use this or Sole, but I think this would be more useful in most situations.

Sis Kebabi

Stacks to: 12
This item is Food that lasts 30 min.
Auction House: Food - Meals - Meat & Eggs
Slot: Inventory
STR: 6 VIT: -2 INT: -2
Attack: 20%
Ranged Attack: 20%
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=10040

These are the most used foods on ninja, try allakazham or something for more detailed food info. Nice against mobs with high defense and low eva, or just low eva. (Crabs sad.gif(). Plus, it's cheap

Gear Tips

Starting out gear

Most people when they hit level 14 think "hmm I'm ninja, so I should wear AGI rings to dodge more, derp." Although its not a bad concept, +STR rings are usually better. +4 str helps when you do really low damage like in valkurm and qufim crabs. The only reason it helps at this level is because your base STR is already very low, and ACC rings aren't available yet, besides DEX (but STR is still better.) Hitting for single digits makes it a lot harder to hold hate.

At early levels, you want to buy all the +evasion gear you can, but as you get higher, +acc and +str also become a factor. For example Jujitsu GI at 40 is very helpful because of its +4 acc in holding hate, and life belt at 48 also.

SH is good, get that or Hauby. SH is a safer choice, but don't get neither.

That's lazy, and pretty bad.

Evasion and Evasion Skill

REMEMBER , Evasion Skill >>>>> Evasion. An example, Spirit torque at 38 is +5 evasion, but Evasion torque at 65 is +7 evasion SKILL. Everytime you level you get a few points of evasion skill, so +7 evasion skill from torque makes you dodge like a 67 (saying you were a 65). This is why Melody earrings (+5 evasion skill when you have a song on you) are -fantastic- in exp pts, when wearing 2 its an incredible +10 evasion skill. +10 Evasion skill is MUCH greater then +10 evasion from Elusive Earrings.

There's some theories and testing that say Eva and Evasion skill work a bit like Attack and STR, but disregard that. It's meant for 75 Evasion builds and just confuses people.

*Some of this information is debatable, but in my opinion +5 from Elusive is slightly worse than +5 evasion skill from Melody. Meanwhile, there's really not much difference between +3 Evasion skill from Evasion Earring and +5 Evasion from Elusive. Confusing I know, but nobody cares enough to test so just go with what I've experienced for now. My experience leans me towards Evasion skill.

Defense gear, because there will come a time...

For tanking gods and other thinks that you won't hit well with your katanas, or monsters that hit you just too damn hard and fast, having Defense gear is essential. Equipping things like Arhat's Gi +1 (-9% phys dmg), Jelly ring (-5% phys damage), Genbu's Kabuto (+15 VIT and +50 HP), and earth staff (-20% dmg and +4 vit) really help you stay alive. Examples of mobs like this are Faust and Zipacna. Zipacna spams Crystal Rain, wiping shadows to the point of it being futile to rely on Utsu, and Faust knocking you around so much its hard to recast. +Defense food on you is great also, I recommend Tavnazian Tacos.

However, this is meant for 75 or endgame, and not for exp. Never exp in an Earth staff or Arhat's Gi (unless you're too poor to afford SH or Hauby). That's just gimp.

Stop that.

ENMITY

It's good to have enmity gear swapping into your voke macro. For example I have for my voke macro:

1st line: /equip "Ear1" "Eris' Earring"
2nd line: /equip "Ear2" "Eris' Earring"
3rd line: /equip "Body" "Arhat's Gi"
4th line: /equip "Legs" "Arhat's Hakama"
5th line: /equip "Hands" "Arhat's Tekko"
6th line: /ja "Provoke" t

This helps a lot, but its only weakness is when your character blinks from changing appearances as the result of swapping gear. This can make it harder for the whm to target you, but it's easily avoided if your whm can type out "/ma "Cure III" Watkins" or has a macro just for you! How friendly. It helps greatly against overnuking BLMs (though if they're really stupid, nothing can really save them.. If you don't feel safe with your whm, its kinda risky, but if you have confidence in your ability not to get hit, go for it.

Anyway I have another macro to switch back into Normal Gear, and I hit it after I Provoke. Note yours will be different because mine is based off a 75 NIN.

/equip "Ear1" "Supponamimi"
/equip "Ear2" "Elusive Earring (or Melody if there is a brd)
/equip "Legs" "Byakko's Haidate"
/equip "Hands" "Seiryu's Kote"
/equip "Body" "Scorpion Harness/Narasimha's Vest/Kirin's Osode etc"

Those are pretty much the basics of gear, if I get more suggestions then I'll be sure to add them.

Here's a rundown on how I believe enmity works.

Enmity is how slowly your hate deteriorates. If you have -Enmity and launch off a 2k Sidewinder, the mob will lose interest faster than if you had +enmity. Got it?

If you voke with +10 enmity, it will cause more hate than with none. However, if you keep that +10 enmity on, the mob will hold interest in you longer because your hate level lessens slower. Hate lowers by itself normally, regardless of how much enmity you have, but equipping +enmity will not only make it lessen slower but rise faster. This is why you see people tanking and kiting in +enmity gear sometimes.

_______________________________________________________________

Macros

Here's how my macros are setup, consider them Guidlines.

1 2 3 4 5 6
CTRL Provoke Utsu: Ichi Utsu: Ni Kurayami: Ni Hojo: Ni Jubaku: Ichi

ALT Provoke Utsu: Ichi Utsu: Ni Blade: Ku Blade: Ten Blade: Jin
recast recast recast

CTRL 7 is the element of the current SC, 8 is Defense gear, 9 is Evasion gear

ALT 7 is Berserk, 8 is Defender, 9 is warcry

The reason behind my recast macros is I want to know when Provoke is up or not without actually using it, so I don't switch to all my enmity gear just for Provoke to be down. I like to know when Ichi and Ni are up also too without casting them sometimes.

I also have a whole seperate macro set with the elemental wheel so I can MB on the fly, easily accessed by the up arrow.

Macros vary from person to person, you can do whatever you want (though I owned my way to 75 with these), just don't suck.

_______________________________________________________________

Subjobs

WAR: You will be using this from 10-75. You need Provoke to take full advantage of Utsusemi's damageless hits, and even if you don'twant to tank (you do), Warriors berserk and double attack make it the best DD subjob anyway.

THF: Good for soloing, because of the Evasion bonuses. Things that you solo like aquarius that attack fast etc and that you -need- to evade it's handy for. -NOT- good in experience parties, Sneak attack with a katana = 1 critical hit, which is useless. No excuse for subbing THF in exp pts, please, sub war.

RNG: ubbing RNG and throwing shurikens is nice, but easily the most expensive job combo in the game. They have great damage potential, but unless you have money flowing out of your EARS, I don't recommend it, because it's VERY expensive. /RNG is neat at 75 with a Coffinmaker, but in Ballista only, not exp (though I haven't tried it yet on Colibiri... I still doubt it would be good). If you must try it, do it at 75 when you have the gear to back it up. No, Ninja tekko do not own hard enough to magically justify NIN/RNG exping to 75.

BLM/RDM: Useless till 51 and you get the HQ staves. You have to whore out on INT and magic attack gear, moldavite earring is a must. Taru is the best race for this. I sub BLM for stuff like Aquarius and Sewer Syrup where melee attacks are relatively weak. Still, don't sub it in EXP in most cases.

DRK: Note that you should ONLY use this subjob at 75. 74? Fuck that, level to 75. The reason I say this is because most of the haste gear that keeps /DRK running is at 75 (Turban, Haidate). Spamming Stun, Bind, and Sleep over time combined with the availability of spike tools like Last Resort and Souleater quickly generate more hate than Provoke over time. The only problem is lack of Defender, but if the mob is stunnable than Stun can nearly make up for that (excluding mobs with Triple attack like Byakko or other abilities to make shadows laughable, aka blood tanking).

Elemental Wheel
If your having a hard time getting your debuffs to land use the following steps listed below for casting. I've noticed that weakening a mobs resistant to the element
that your debuffing the mob with helps to increase your chances of a sucessful debuff. To me having my debuffs stick is important.

Elements go as follows:

Doton (Earth) >> Huton (Wind) >> Hyoton (Ice) >> Katon (Fire) >> Suiton (Water) >> Raiton (Thunder)

For Hojo: Ni -Earth Element

Use Raiton: Ni
Uses the NIN tool Hiraishin
Lightning Damage
Lowers the targets resistance to Earth
Then Cast Hojo: Ni

For Jubaku: Ichi -Ice Element

Use Huton: Ni
Uses the NIN tool Kawahoriogi
Wind Damage
Lowers the targets resistance to Ice
Then Cast Jubaku: Ichi

When I cast I go in this order
Kurayami: Ni
Raiton: Ni (If Needed)
Hojo: Ni
Huton: NI (If needed)
Jubaku: Ichi

Also when your a high enough level macro in a Ninjitsu torque. They help out a bit.
/equip Neck "Ninjitsu Torque"
/ma "Spell Name" <t>
/wait ?
/equip Neck "Spectacles or Evasion Torque or whatever"
/recast "Spell Name"

Ninja tips

-NEVER- panic. Keeping your cool is very important. For example, a whm seeing the tank in red hp and freaking out and going "OMFG BENEDICTION" instead of flashing sucks. A stressed out ninja can't tank very well, if your upset or something in RL, although FFXI is a good way to tank your mind off of it, its not a good idea to blink tank. Sucky ninjas make baby jesus pull aggro. sad.gif My point is that sucking in one party can add to your reputation and prevent you from being invited again so... yeah.

-How to take care of adds? What I do is cast Kurayami on the link, therefore getting hate on the add and blinding it at the same time, so it doesn't eat your shadows as fast. You usually don't want 2 IT mobs wailing on you, but if it must happen you want at least one blinded. Kurayami generates enough hate to pull it off a failed sleep II (because of your enmity gear), and also doesn't get you killed. If kurayami is down, you can also use Hojo, although its not as effective. Using provoke on an add lessens your hate on the main mob, making the fight harder. Don't want two out of control mobs running around. Melee's usually see how well you fare and find the "hate" line, and they can usually adjust themselves to not go over that line. If you miss a voke and the ranger doesnt see and pops off a Barrage, things won't go well. Of course, you still want the add slept as soon as possible.

-If your having trouble getting hit and making mistakes you wouldn't normally make. Turn on /away and take off your linkshell, it enables you to focus on combat a lot easier, and after you find your groove you can turn off away and turn on your LS. This goes back to tip one as to why. People remember sponges. By taking my job seriously and as a result playing well., I got re-invited to parties when I wasn't even seeking or on NIN itself.

-ELIMINATE all unnecessary party chat macros. The only party chat macro you need is Weapon skills, and even then... it's not required. By cutting down on the amount of party chat spam, you will see the important things like TP calls or some teammate warning of a pop. Give it a shot. Provoke party chat macros are useless, nobody cares that you're provoking, they will only care if you're not provoking. Same for Utsu, you don't need Utsu in party chat. Nobody cares, and if you get interrupted, that's just more spam.

-If your having trouble with Utsu Ichi getting interrupted, heres a tip. If you get hit around 15-20% your utsu will has a good chance not get interrupted. But unless the mob is slowed it will usually have time to hit you again before your done casting. Slow is very important in this situation. A thing to note is that your ninjutsu skill effects your interruption rate as well as the amount of shadows taken from AOE. So keep it leveled.

-Still having trouble with getting hit? Sometimes for unpredictable mobs with moves like double attack and Whirl of Rage or stuff like that, I like to rely on Ichi, and save Ni for emergencies. For example, I usually go Ni, the mob is pulled and eats 4 shadows, Ni , Ichi, Ni etc. But if I'm having trouble with shadows being wiped or eaten, I cast the initial ni, and when the mob is pulled I cast Ichi, then Ni, then Ichi. If your recast timers are shot, after your 2nd Ichi you will probably be naked. If you do it in this order, you will have Ni up sooner then Ichi, which makes things a bit safer.

-Not really a tip, but a reminder because I can't stress this enough, it's important. Your parties exp depends on YOUR performance. If you are playing badly then you will use more of the healers MP or even die, causing more downtime and probably less party invites in your future. You get a reputation from parties you tank in, and if you perform well you have a higher chance of getting invited again. If your bad, well, rumors spread fast. If you suck normally, then level DRG. People will at least expect it then, and people probably won't die.

- You may have heard of people spamming elemental ninjutsu to keep hate, and while its true that this is a useful technique, it's also misinterpreted a lot. This isn't a viable strategy until at least 40. The Ichi spells are completely useless, and you could even say that you could get away with not buying them at all, but I don't recommend that, it's always nice to weaken the mob for the SC and not having all your spells is gimp. But if you don't buy them all, it can be our little secret.

Gear

Earrings

Levels:

1: Cassie Earring (If you can afford, if not, wear whatever crap is available)
10: Hope Earring
14: Silver Earring (if you are tanking)
16: Bone Earring (if you are DDing)
21: Beetle Earring (if you are DDing)
24: Mythril Earring (if you are tanking)
29: Dodge Earring
52: Melody EarringAmazing boost to evasion with BRD
54: Eris' Earring (Awesome for voke macro, get +1 if you can)
55: Waetoto's Earring (If you're taru)
55: Morukaka Earring (If you're taru)
60: Elusive Earring (Use these if you don't have a bard in your party)
72: Suppanomimi
75: Brutal Earring

Body

Levels:

13: Power Gi
16: Bone Harness +1
21: Beetle Harness +1
25: Windurstian Gi
40: Royal Squire's Chainmail or Jujitsu Gi (preferred)
45: Brigadine +1, arguabley better than Jujitsu Gi because of the higher defense and bonuses to other stats, but if you can't afford the +1, just stick with your Gi, you won't notice a difference.
50: Nokizaru Gi
55: Master's Gi or Royal Knight's Chainmail, I prefer Chainmail because of the slightly higher defense and damage stats, but some may prefer the more expensive Gi.
57: Scorpion Harness. A great piece of equipment to have and definitely worth farming for.
59: Haubergeon. You won't need this unless you want to swap it into your Jin macro, because usually parties at that level won't allow you to wear -20 Evasion. However, if you have a good burn party... Regardless, make Scorpion Harness a priority. You can always sell it to get this later for merits.
63: Arhat's Gi, good for enmity, however the lack of accuracy on this piece will hurt you more than the enmity will help you in my opinion.
70+: You should know by now what you want.

FAQ

[b]Is Ochiudo's Kote worth it?

Yes, it's awesome. Don't level without it.

Haubergeon or Byrnie

Haubergeon. You may hit a bit harder with Byrnie, but the Acc from Hauby is what puts it ahead.

At level 24, should I get Emp-

Yes.

Should I use Shurikens?

They are usually too expensive for their price, and you'd have to spam them to keep your throwing skill at a level where they would be useful. I'm going to say no with this one.

Should I use Sword/Dagger/Club etc?

No, stick with your A- weapon.

What weapon skill should I be using?

Rin > Retsu > To > Chi > Jin.

Ten/Ku might do decent damage if you're closing Darkness (unless you're at 75 with top tier gear), but Teki and Ei are useless.

Can I sub T-

WAR? Yes, sub WAR always.

Well thats all I can think of off the top of my head, please post any suggestions or comments, or tell me if I'm wrong so I can change things. This is just a basic guide, not trying to lay the way of the ninja in stone or anything, just do what you want, I'm not paying for your POL account, but if you suck, you're getting booted from my party. /elitist

1. evasion torque is +7 eva skill

2. narivan is 27% attack but cap 30 @ 111, so it's not good once your attak is beyond 111, so I would say it's food for lv 37

3. Squid sushi has +6 AGI, good for eva style ninja, sole sushi is for attack style ninja. If conside race, i would think hume, elvann, and galka use squid, while mithra and taru use sole, but it really depends on ninja tanking style.

How do you carry around so much extra gear? I love swapping equips but I find myself short on inventory space so I cant carry as much extra equips as I would like.

Just get used to the fact that we aren't designed to tank so as a result we have to bring additonal gear to adjust to our parties, mobs, and so on. You throw in tools, meds like echo drops, silent oils, and so on and your lucky if you have an extra slot open. Playing a NIN I've learned that during exp sessions your not going to have the same oppertunity as other jobs to capitalize on mob drops. Plan to make gil in other ways.

Nice post Watkins. I have to agree with Areen's food choices though. I typically carry the squid with me to help with the lack of Elvaan agi, and also a stack of Dorado for the enmity if hate is a bit sketchy. Sole sushi will definitely be my food of choice a bit later in lvls when being a decent DD and Tank will be somewhat easier to juggle.

55/60 when heading to exp ; ; I would love to have some room for the loot.

for the nin/blm, i think at 40 is when you can sub blm since you get the Ni version of every elemental wheel and we know that they do about the same damage or lower as level progresses on. i don't recommend subbing blm ever, but lvl 40 is where you can sub nin/blm instead of 51.

If you do it in this order, you will have Ni up sooner then Ichi, which makes things a LOT safer.

i wish someone would of mentioned this earlier. i'm 75 and never really thought about it but knew about it and never put it to use. when i tanked bune for my 2nd time, i was the only melee. I was the DD, i was the tank, debuffer etc. i used Ichi only and whenever he did radiant breath(silences u and hits through blinks but doesnt take off blinks) i would take about 800 damage and wait for someone to silena me. i told my mage silena is priority over cures since a ninja who can't blink is a dead ninja. having Ni ready and spamming the button since you sometimes lose count when you get hit for 800+, i got my blink up and survived. I recasted Ichi and continued tanking Bune with Ichi only and when he fang rushed(takes off 3 blinks or does like 1k+ dmg) it would take my blinks off and do some damage and I would have Ni up again. I truly wished I wasn't such a retard to think tank garlaige bats with Ichi only because I was able to tank them with Ni only thinking I'm saving gil from that extra blink. i'm just now a less retarded nin XD
