I've been doing custom .dat files for a while now. In fact, I had no idea other people were into making them as well. (Besides all the Japanese people, who's websites I got my programs from.)

Anyway, this is my first post on Killing Ifrit. So "hello" and, uh...here's some of the crap I've done:

This is the BST AF set. I made it for my friend who plays a mithra. He didn't like it.

I have another friend who didn't like the way THF AF pants looked. So this is an evolved THF AF outfit with Scorpion Harness. The harness is mostly the same though, but I did add some fishnet on the sleeves and the back is a bit different. She seems to like it. Success!

Here it is again with the custom THF AF vest. I still don't know what to do for the head armor, if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

On to the important things, Elvaan:

Here's my character model. The outfit on the 2 on the left side is what I will look like as soon as I get Osode (soon...). Next to that is full God armor. The kabuto is equipt with a friendly spike on top, and Sieryu's Kote was done with Batman spikes. The last one was the very first thing I changed in the game. I made RNG AF pink. I still like it, even though it's really only just a color change.

Ok ok, last one. This is some SAM stuff I made for my friend. Everything you see is modified (some only slightly) even the sword. So here's my stuff and I don't care if no one likes it cause I can draw pictures too!

Katoke, I'm new to these forums, but I think Cyphorith pointed you in a pretty good direction. I used his advice and found this: http://ffxi.killvoid.com/forums.php?m=posts&q=58412

It's pretty easy to understand and requires only a minimal amount of "google searching."

Also I notice you are using "msPWNT.exe" for you graphic indulgences. Is that anything like Photoshop? If it isn't, you may have a hard time when you skin the models.

Not bad for a first attempt, half the battle is actually getting your .dat files into the right folders. Photoshop/Metasequoia is the other half. I'm not sure I'm the best one to give you Photoshop tips, but here's a few things to consider (or not).

1. Don't make everything a flat color. You have to create a texture that looks like the material you are going for. Cloth needs to looks like cloth, metal needs to look metal, etc.

2. Be careful how "birght" and "saturated" you make the color of your armor. Blue armor is cool, but I think if you used this in-game, you might stick out a bit. Not a problem though. Just lessen the saturation to "grey" it up a bit.

3. Watch out for "extreme" contrast. If you take a look at the FFxi armor, you will notice the blacks are not jet black (RGB 0,0,0). The reason for this is, if you are standing out in the sunlight, your black armor should not look as black as it would in a dark cave. You need to leave some of shading to be done by the game engine.

I kinda lost my train of thought, but I think maybe some of that is Ok advice. Also the harness seems to be a bit blurry. I look forward to seeing your next model! Maybe I'll make some more too!
