Here is a little mini guide that I made up for gamefaqs users to keep gil questions down to a minimum and to help newbs starting who were having trouble with getting decent gil early in the game. This was the primary method that I used to make gil at early levels so I could get all the gear that I needed including Ochiudo's Kote, Sniper rings, Brown Belt, Cross-counters, etc. And if there are some parallels with Path's thread I do apologize as I skimmed through this thread a few years ago and haven't really since then, but this is what I had done before I even knew KI (or any MNK forum existed for that matter in early '07). It should also help somewhat for those starting out, especially MNKs as I believe that the MNK job coupled with /THF as the subjob is one of the best for farming.
I know that prices have somewhat changed in regards to the economy these days as opposed to then, but the guide is still pretty helpful I think. Enjoy!
If you’re just starting this game one of the biggest obstacles is making a good amount of gil to purchase the goods you need. First and foremost, never buy anything that you can get cheaper from the NPCs in town. I talking about shields, swords, daggers, h2h weapons, staves, etc. Always see your local shops before you spend gil at the AH.
Now on to the mini-guide…
On average, I'll make about 75-100k for 3-4 hours of farming a night right now. The reason why I’m able to do this, is because I’m able to see what things sell well at the AH and find the places where I can get it. Having a melee job with a decently leveled THF as a subjob can make a huge difference between getting good drops, to decent drops, to hardly any drops. At levell 15, THF will have two helpful things: Gilfinder and Treasure Hunter. Treasure Hunter is good because it increases the chances that normal items from mobs will drop as you farm. I don’t think that it really helps much with NM drops, but I’m not an expert on that so take what I say about that with a grain of salt. At lower levels, odds are your THF will either be too low for a subjob or hardly leveled at all for a main job. Some people will level up THF to 15 for the traits I listed above. But if you’re a melee (WAR or MNK), THF is great for farming. Just remember to change your subjob before you go out for exp parties though. No one likes a gimpy subjob.
One important thing you need is a good system that works for you. I pretty much farm Monday-Thursday and I try to party/do quests and missions Friday-Sunday. I know people who party Monday-Friday and strictly farm on the weekend. But depending on your lvl and job (and also your server) the amount of gil you make can vary as does the schedule that feels the best for you.
So here are a few suggestions based on my experience so far.
This is a mini-guide based primarily off of my game experience, from farming at early levels to my current level. I will give a little history as to why I needed a lot of gil so many of you won’t think that I’m a greedy little bastard. Most of what I’m writing isn’t a secret nor is it path to guaranteed gillions. All it is, is a small guide on how-to make some decent gil early on.
First and for most, my main job is MNK. Despite what people may think or say, the MNK job is the MOST EXPENSIVE job to gear, especially from lvls 34-40. When I was going through those levels, Ochiudo Kote (level 34) were going for 800-1000k gil, Mthr. Knuckles +1 (level 38) 50k, sniper rings (level 40) were around 500k and woodsman rings (level 40) were around 450k. Brown Belt (level 40) was stable at 500k and Jujitsu Gi (level 40) was going for over 300k at the time. And this is gear that you can equip up to level 40. So if I wanted to be a decent MNK, I knew what type of gear I needed to get. So here are my strategies for getting gil and all of these items before I even reached level 40.
Remember, these prices at the AH can change and primarily come from the Jeuno AH prices, so I’m using what I’ve seen today at the AH for the basis of what to look forward to when selling these items for gil. Please remember that some items for sale in Jeuno can be more or less, but not a huge difference. We’re talking mostly farmed items here, not endgame drops. :)
A) First of all, one of the quick and easy way to make gil is to use your Conquest Points to “purchase” weapons and gear from your nation’s NPC who gives you your signet. The great thing about this is it doesn’t cost you any gil up front. The Nation guards usually stand outside the gates of the cities. Depending on your Nation Rank, at what level you can purchase gear will be determined. For example, if you are Rank 3, you can purchase gear anything Rank 3 and below. Basically, you can not purchase anything higher than your Rank, regardless of the Conquest Points that you have at the time.
A good example of an exploit here is the Mercenary’s Knife. Due to the popularity of the DNC job, the Mercenary’s Knife which cost 2000 Conquest Points and usually sold for about 8-9k at an AH was going for an easy 20-25k on some servers because of the demand by the DNC job, but usually around 15k now. Not bad if you have some Conquest Points to spare and the Rank to get it. Rank 2 is very easy to get and if you had 6000 Conquest Points that could have easily been at least 60k in the bank for you. Some of you are thinking, “Why would I waste Conquest Points like that?!” Trust me, it’s not a waste. And if some of you worry about getting those points back, simply change to a level 1 job, get signet going, and kill the mobs around the starter cities. If you do this to lvl 8-10, you’ll get back a pretty good number of conquest points easily and you’ll have leveled up a job in the process. Do this with again picking another level 1 job. And as an extra, all the drops that you’ve gotten from the mobs as you leveled up and got more Conquest Points, can go right into the AH for even more gil.
I actually had a friend who leveled all of his unlocked jobs (beside his main job which was level 60 RDM and primary subjob WHM at lvl 37) to level 10 just to use the Conquest Points to get gear to sell at the AH for gil. He made a really nice amount of gil and he also had more than enough crap leftover that he ended up throwing most of it away because it wouldn’t fit in his Mog House and he had all his slots filled at the AH, even on his mules.
Stingy Bees
B) We all joke about killing the stingy bees and getting their beehive chips for mad gilz. But it’s actually a very easy and quick way to make some gil. Granted that when I farmed for beehive chips, they were going for 7-8k a stack so I made a killing off of them. Though they are going for roughly 4-5k now, that’s ok because they sell super fast and at a steady price. And usually bees will drop the chips more often than not (stingy bees is just a fade/joke thing from the message boards). When I used to farm these, just two/two and a half hours of farming for beehive chips, I’d normally have three stacks of chips (4k x 3), a stack of pot of honey (4k), and two or three stacks of insect wings (1k x 2) around lvl 15-18. So for two hours of farming just the bees alone would be roughly 18k gil right there. The two best places to farm for beehive chips (in my opinion) are:
1) Zegham Hill in North Gustaberg: Why? Because all that hill is, is pretty much bees, goblins, and sheep. Though I’d stay away from the sheep and goblins; sheep drop skins and meat and all they do is take up space and the goblins do drop goblin items that go quickly at the AH from 500-1k. But the main reason you’ll be here are for the bees. And as an added bonus, there is a chance that one of the bees on the second level of Zegham Hill will spawn Stinging Sophie. Stinging Sophie was the second NM that I’d ever killed. What’s special about her is that she can drop the Beestinger (rare knife) which used to go for an easy 30-40k. Now the Beestinger will go anywhere from 7-10k, maybe more on starter city AHes. So basically, farm the bees on both levels of Zegham Hill and you’ll see Stinging Sophie replace one of the bees every hour/hour and a half or so kill for the drop. If you’re a melee job at around 15, 16 or higher, she’ll fall to you no problem.
2) Giddeus: Ton of bees here. This is also a decent place to farm for beehive chips. But the difference between here and Zegham Hill is the level you need to be. If your level isn’t high enough, some parts of Giddeus will get you some annoying aggro from the yagudo that roam these parts. And on top of that, if you’re level isn’t high enough, you won’t be able to farm bees here in an effective manner either. So if your level is plenty high and you don’t have to worry about aggro, by all means farm here, and kill some of the yagudo (Mendicant, Theologist, Priests, and Votaries. These mobs levels go up to level 27 so be careful). The items that you should be keeping your eyes on are the slacks, linen slops, holly clogs, and silver beast coins. These items you’ll want to store in your inventory. The slacks and linen slops go fast for a decent price (anywhere from 3-5k) and the holly clogs should go for about 2k. The other interesting thing about Giddeus is that there are two notable NMs that pop here. The more popular one Hoo Mjuu the Torrent, who drops the rare-dropping Monster Signa, usually has a couple people camping him almost always. If you’re at least lvl 24-25, you should be able to beat him. Be warned that he’ll use benediction to restore lost HP at about 50% HP loss and that can be the difference between winning the fight or getting ko’d. If you do manage to get the claim, beat him, and get the drop, congrats! You just made an easy 100k of the Monster Signa. The other NM that you may run into is Vuu Puqu the Beguiler. He’s bit tougher than Hoo Mjuu the Torrent and the only significant drop he has is the Bird Whistle which goes for roughly 9-10k. Good thing about the Bird Whistle is that it drops fairly well. Now, if your levels are too low for Giddeus than save it when you’re high enough to farm there. On to…
3) East Sarutabaruta: On the map from I-7, J-7 to the Stone Monument in K-6 and along the river out toward the road is where I got most of my gil. The two main mobs to camp here are the bees of course and the crawlers. We all know what we get from the bees, but it’s the crawlers that we also want drops from too. The crawlers will drop silk thread if you’re lucky and when I farmed here they were going for 13-15k a stack, now they are about 8-9k. Still not too bad because the price of gear and other items are going down too thanks to the removal of RMTs. Granted the silk threads don’t drop as easily as the beehive chips do, they are still worth farming especially if you’re levels are up to low teens (8-12. Another awesome thing about this area is that an NM will spawn in place of one of the crawlers. His name is Spiny Spipi and what is so good about him is he drops the rare Mist Silk Cape. Whether you want this cape for yourself or to sell is up to you, but it is one of the best capes for mages at every early levels. When I was able to get the drop, I’d sell it at the starter cities AHes for an easy 70k because that’s what they were going for. It was going for 45-50k in Jeuno’s Ah but now it’s about 35-40k. Still a nice amount of gil!
So on average, I’d farm here for three hours to three hours and a half and get 4-5 stacks of beehive chips (4k x 4), 1-1.5 stacks of silk thread (8-9k), 2 stacks of honey (4k x 2), and 3 stacks of insect wings (1k x 3) for a nice total of 35k gil. Not too shabby if you do this for a few days.
4) North Gustaberg: J-5 to H-6 of the map you’ll find a nice amount of walking saplings. What’s nice about these saplings is that they will drop grain seeds which go for an easy 10-12k a stack. Also, like the silk thread, they are not a common drop, but I think they drop more often than silk threads do. On top of that, they also drop vegetable seeds which go for 5-7k a stack. I have noticed that when it’s Firesday and the moon is full, the grain seeds will be an unusually common drop. On other thing about this area, though the maighdean Uaine doesn’t drop anything that you can sell, she will drop the Optical Earring (rare/ex ACC +1, ATK -2) which is a 100% drop; one of the very few items that will directly increase your ACC at that such low levels (yes I’m one of those FFXI players who belief that you can’t ever have enough ACC ^_^). So if you can, try to take her out while you’re out there farming those grain seeds.
One last thing…
Always remember to look for the best prices to sell your goods, but also take into account how quickly they sell. Putting up an item on the AH for a nice profit won’t do you any good if the last time that particular item sold was 6 months ago. And unless you can flood the AH with your items to directly raise the price, don’t bet on yours being the only one left at 10k above the average price will be a guarantee sell for someone desperate enough to buy it. Always keep these issues in mind. Your goal is to farm well and have your items sell quickly on the AH to increase your gil flow. And no, I don’t mean to undercut the AH either by selling your items at 1 gil or 10 gil when it’s going for 1k-10k or something like that. People have been playing this game a long time and they’ll get really good deals of suckers like that. I once bought a something from the AH for 5k gil when said item was usually 50k. I was forgot to add an extra zero. All you’re doing by undercutting is making your item cheap for your profit return to be lower and everyone else’s as well. Don’t be greedy, just be efficient and smart.
Hope this helps a little bit at least.
Good luck. :D
