I apologize ahead of time if this information has been posted already, however I felt it was worth giving a detailed description of this new HNM and my experience with him tonight.
Shen is a forced pop HNM off the coast of Purgonorgo Isle (this Isle is reached by taking the Manaclipper from Bibiki Bay. The location of the ??? is at J-9 in the very lower left (South West) corner.
To spawn Shen simply trade the ??? a Shrimp Lantern. I am unsure of the level of synth of Shrimp Lantern, however I do know that it is a Goldsmithing recipe with subs of Smithing and Alchemy. The recipe is
Crystal: Fire
Ingredients: Tin Ingot, Beeswax, Moblumin Sheet, Moblin Putty
Moblumin Sheet is also a goldsmithing recipe. I am unsure of its level as well. I do know that it is above 64 as another goldsmither tried to synth it at 49 and was too far under the cap. I was able to synth Shrimp Lantern at 63+4 gold and 83 alchemy (although gold is the main synth so alchemy requirement is less than 60) and 53 smithing. The recipe for Moblumin Sheet is
Crystal: Fire
Ingredient: Moblumin Ingot
For the sheet I asked a friend who is level 83 to synth and he was able to do so with no problems. I am certain it is a lower level but I wanted to take as few risks as possible (I failed my first Moblumin Sheet synth without skillup).
Moblumin Ingots are dropped off of Goblin Freelance in Oldton Movopolis. These are the red golbins that lead a party of moblins around. There are only two that pop and are about a 15 minute repop. The drop rate with a thief with TH2 was not bad. We got 2 ingots in about 6 kills.
Moblin Putty was another problematic ingredient. Its recips is
Crystal: Earth
Ingredients: Flaxseed Oil x2, Shell Powder x2, Zincite x3
I synthed this at 83 Alchemy with no problems although I imagine the level is much much lower.
Flaxseed Oil was synthed by my fiance as its clothcraft. She is level 81 cloth and had no difficulty (again its probably much lower level), the recipe is
Crystal: Water
Ingredients: Flax Flowerx2
Shell Powder is yet another new item since the update. It is a bonecraft recipt. I synthed this at level 16 bone and had no problems, the recipe is
Crystal: Wind
Ingredients: Seashellx3
Finally there is Zincite which is Auctionable (under alchemy), however its in low supply. However these drop off of Glacier Eaters in Uleguerand Range. Simply go down the ramp and they live in the first tunnel straight ahead (just past the first set of Buffalo). The drop rate (again with TH2) was not bad, perhaps 1/4-1/5. The worms respawn very fast so this is not a hard ingredient to farm.
Finally After synthing my Shrimp Lantern I headed out to Purgonorgo Isle. The party makeup was the following (we really had NO idea what to expect other than with all the trouble it took to make the pop item we were probably underprepared)
Tank: Paladin level 69 (me)
Healer: White Mage level 75
Support: Red Mage level 70
Damage Dealers: Samurai level 70, Thief level 70, Black Mage level 50
We really didn't know what to expect so we just invited everyone with the expansion installed currently on the LS to come along.
Upon Trading your Shrimp Lantern to the ??? in the very South West corner of J-9 you get the following Message
The Shrimp Lantern begins skimming quietly across the surface of the water
...Whats This!?
An enormous creature is chasing after it from below!!!
Shen then appears. Shen is an Uragnite type mob. Since we didn't know what to expect the Paladin, Samurai and Red Mage all saved up 300 tp for Spirits Withing. The plan was for the Samurai to take first voke and the thief to SATA Sharkbite onto me (the Paladin). This was a very bad idea. Shen was hitting our Samurai for 300+ every time with some 350+ in there. Spirits went off fine, SATA sharkbite landed (with 300 tp) for around 300 damage.
As a 69 Paladin Shen was hitting me for 280 with a sword and sheild and the low 200's with a Terra Staff on (after getting off Spirits Within). Within probably 10-15 seconds of the fight beginning Shen Summoned Shen's Filtrate which is a water elemental. Both Shen and the Filtrate seem to cast the following spells: Flood, Waterga III and Water IV.
After spirits was done with melee damage was the usual nonsense on HNM (0-5 damage with some criticals in the 20's). Shen's weaponskill went off before I was able to switch to a Terra Staff and it hit me for 800 Damage. A second one landed later for around 630 with the staff on. After about 2k damage from spirits and a samurai two hour Shen's health appeared to be 100% in tact, there may have been one pixel gone. He spams the spells very fast, between him and the elemental one of them was always casting. Our rdm tried to Elemental Seal Silence to no avail. The Elemental attacked our Red Mage and did approximately 150 damage a hit. We were unable to sleep it either.
Needless to say we did not kill him and therefore have no idea as to what the drop is. After a complete wipe (did not take but 1 minute and we only lasted that long because of 2 hours), Shen despawned in about 5 minutes and the ??? respawned about 5 minutes later.
Although I did not whitness them I would assume that Shen has all the typical Uragnite weapon skills. However he never once drew in his shell, however the damage dealt to him was nowhere near enough to justify this. He did not do the usual AoE poison that Uragnites do, but this was an incredibly short fight. I have no idea on his regen because we did not dent his health and he did not withdrawl.
Again I apologize if this information has been posted elsewhere. Overall fighting him was a very fun experience (death isn't so bad with an R3), perhaps anyone who has attempted fighting him with more luck than us can share their experiences in this thread.
