Thank you for the guide, it was immensely helpful.
Question: parts of some textures that are supposed to be transparent are filled in 3ds Max, any way to fix this?

Probably.
And I'm not a quitter. Just don't have the time/patience/attention span to try something like this out.

I think the Fan Art section would be appropriate, although I'm sure many of the people over there probably know how to do it but I think they'd still appreciate it.

ive got a problem wherin i follow all the directions.. its all pretty straight forward. everything works - except that my models dont load with their textures. they are just blank white models.
I cant open and close them from withing Mesq just fine and see the textures, but 3dsmax wont display them.
Spent some time trying to figure out why the carry-over isnt happening, but i cant find any options in 3dsmax that might be on/off to prevent it.

Heres one I did >_> - yeah its a bit random lol.
Also I think someone asked if 3dsmax was for free, well its not, but you can download a free trial from their site which lasts usual 30days. Also you could try Gmax(freeware version) except it cant import .mqo files and cant export them either which makes it useless for editing FFXI models.

i've been moved'd. maybe it'll be more popular now?
hmmm.. i remember this happening to me a couple times, but i don't remember why, and i don't think it was a big problem. i think it may have been from me changing the material for the models (which is a no-no) for fun. but i dunno. so i can't really help ya there.
p.s. Jammey, that screen's awesome XD

When I render, as with a few other people, all I am seeing is a non-textured person, and I didnt change anything. The Metasequoia program shows me with gear on, but 3DStudio Max doesnt.

Can you make one with a Paladin fighting a Dark Knight in some huuuuge epic battle type atmosphere? I'd like to make it a desktop pic or something. That would ROCK...
Adaman gear with Koenig Gear or something... THANKS

when i went through this tutorial, i had the same problem - i followed the link on the 1st post but the only 3dsmax trial available is version 8. the plugin for MQO files works in 8.. but if you import models in version 8 with that mqo plugin, they dont import with textures. If you use the exact same plugin with 3dsmax v7, the textures DO import.
seems to have something to do with 3dsmax 8 and that older plugin.. as long as im using 7, its flawless.
Hmmsphil, the textures on ffxi models often seem to have transparent regions in them. 3dsmax isnt picking up on them quite right in the import process. Course, its not unexpected, but any textures with transparent regions will show as shaded in. If you import the chocobo model, its especially noticable and almost unusable it looks so bad.
I havent personally tried yet, but the two options that come to mind is
A. Modify the structure of the 3d model to compensate for the desired look your after.
B. Find a way in 3dsmax (im sure there is one) to set the specific color its using to shade those transparent regions - back to transparent.
This is one I did for a friend the other day:

Notice around the waist, the leaflets on the body armor are shaded green inbetween where they should be transparent.. that just how it goes unless your real smart and can modify the model or texture in 3ds.
