As posted a couple times in this thread already, Polearm upgrades are:
Harpoon >> Bronze Spear >> Spear >> Lance
I just got the 3rd upgrade and thought it was Brass Spear, bought it and then found out otherwise

I've just discovered that the 7th Great Axe upgrade is the Hydro Cutter, which is the "improved" version of the Heavy Axe. The GA's seem to follow a pattern of a Great Axe and an improved version of that Great Axe.

Hmm I have a question. Say I give me NPC one kind of weapon. When it comes time to upgrade can I switch the type of weapon? For example I bought my buddy the first katana cuz that was the only weapon it could use selling in jeuno. When it comes time to update can I get it the updated verison of one of the others weapons like say the first upgrade of the GKT?

You can switch to whatever weapon you want that is on your current upgrade "tier", you do not have to restart from lvl1.
7th Katana upgrade found - Kabutowari (lvl61)
-Vyzrael

so just outta curiosity. I was gonna make my NPC a whm wanna be, and tried to hand in a bronze hammer...but it wasnt taken. Figuring my shit was broken, a friend of mine told me to try handing in another weapon, so I made my NPC a gilseller drg/whm with a polearm, by handing in a Harpoon, which was taken.
moral of the story: Bronze Hammer isnt the first club weapon
oops, allready been covered. gg me

An avid NPC lvl'er i've finally finished all of my NPC quests and just got the 7th weapon upgrade. The question now is
which weapon to choose ? Scythe, G. Kat. G sword an G axe all look appealing for skillchaining but what i really want
is the weapon with the greatest DoT, gil isn't an issue i'm only concerned with damage output. If anyone has any info
they can back up with proof/theory would be appreciated..
btw- the sticky about NPC weapon upgrades is pointless.. there's no reason to discuss or guess what weapons are
available for each upgrade, it's all documented right here:

I got my NPC Ram-Dao for the 7th upgrade and it has worked quite well. The dmg is quite steady 50-60 DMG per swing and 100 DMG on crits on Lizards in Attohwa Chasm that are 5-6 lvls above my NPC. It has the highest base dmg of all the weapons right now I think. I don't think I've seen Sickle Moon yet with my lvl 60 NPC, but I might confuse it with Crescent Moon >< The highest WS dmg I've seen so far has been 250 dmg on the lizards. Shock Wave hasn't been a problem yet. Ram-Dao looks cool too.

I was wondering if folks can clear up a few things for me in regards to changing your NPC's weapons...
I recently gave my NPC what is apparently his final Polearm upgrade. Now, I have no complaints about Polearm - most of its weaponskills chain nicely to the weapons I use - but it's certainly possible that I might want my NPC to use a different weapon in the future.
Now, I've read that getting your NPC to use a different type of weapon is as easy as trading the "beginner" weapon of that type to Luto. My questions have to do with what happens after that. Let's assume that I decide to change to Sword, and so fork over a Bronze Sword...
1. Will I need to proceed through all seven sword levels? i.e., will I need to turn in Spatha, Scimitar, Longsword, Tuck, Tulwar, and Schlaeger before my NPC will be at maximum Sword proficiency? And if that's the case, can I do it all at once, or will Luto space them out as I build up NPC affinity, just as she did with my Polearms?
2. If after having my NPC use a Sword for a while I decide that I'd like the Polearm back, how do I go about it? Do I have to trade the basic Polearm (Harpoon) to Luto and go through all the upgrades? Or can I skip straight to level seven again with a Mithril Lance?
3. If I have Shield levelled along with a one-handed weapon, and change to a two-handed weapon, are all those Shield levels lost? That is, if I turn back to a one-handed weapon, will my NPC have a fully upgraded Shield, or will I need to proceed through the Shield levels as well?

hey guys
i can confirm for polearm its harpoon -> bronze spear -> spear -> lance.
and it doesnt have to do with level it seems. my npc is only 40 and wearing the lance already.
but can anyone give me a CONFIRMED update for 1H sword, what comes after bronze? my friend treid both spatha and xiphos (which are both mentioned in different guides -.-) but wont work.

You don't need to start with the first weapon when you change weapon types. Once you hit a tier with one weapon, you can trade any weapon of that tier. For example, once you reach the third tier of polearms, you can trade any third tier weapon, be it sword, knuckles, club, or anything else. Once you reach the final tier for one, you've reached it for all. It's much easier than you were told ;o
