Ok, my NPC is a 39 healer, and i thought that she would lose her weapon, but i guess i was dead wrong. They get spells as they lvl, she used to cast only Protect and Shell and dia and parlyze slow, but now she has Protect/shell 2 and dia 2 which is really nice.
HEALERS ONLY HEAL WHEN UR HP IS BELOW 50% (i have been farming since she was 35 and thats when i notice her use Cure 3) Also, they get off a good 3 cure 3's and a few enfeebles before they send you the low mp notification.(NPC is elvaan, so if its taru should be more) If the npc does not use an enfeebles afterwards, they can still cast one more cure3 before they are totally out. So take notice of this, they arent OUT of mp, just below 25% i believe. My npc carries the Brass Zhagnal, however because she's a healer, she rarely uses a WS (never lets me know but w/e, i like the cures) I have seen slice dark harvest and one other one, im not familiar w/ scythes tho so i forget what the other one was. The next update apparently on POL website will include new stuff for NPC including a "G1". For the appearance upgrade i got a cruddy Brass Cap, makes her look stupid (tried changing several times, only one she gets).

Also, it should be noted that healer gains many white magic spells as it levels. So far I've noticed Haste at 40 and Cure IV at 41, same levels players get them. I haven't died with my npc out, so I haven't gotten a chance to see if it will raise (doubtful, but damn would that be nice).
I'm looking forward to the update. Since it shows a pic of an NPC in old movapolos, I really hope that means that they will make NPC's summonable in new areas (maybe unlocked after completion of their G1?).
One more question -
Every time I chat with my NPC, she asks for an update on the little girl from Eldieme Necropolis. Could this be another part of the quest? I forget where to find her or her mother, but exploring this might open a few new options.
Edit: Laurana (Artisan Bridge, Upper Jeuno) is the girl's mother. I'll have to go bug her when I get back from class today.

New command abilities sucks. What have been really added are: Talk (useless sentence) and Disband (usefull so now you don't depop your NPC by mistake)
Im told you can play with your NPC in some Dunjeon. People who thought NPC were useless will maybe see them usefull since you can call them in Garlaigue Citadelle, Crawler Nest (didn't tried myself).
And does anyone have any information about the New quest where you have to go to windurst to find a book? Didn't look it up now.

You can trade with your NPC directly now. Has anyone tested this? I'd like to know what can be traded before I go off buying 500 pieces of armor. xD
The menu at the R. point is more complex now. I assume that after you trade it a piece of armor you can pick it from the menu? I don't know, but I can pick a Seer's crown in the Headgear menu. >_>

anyone have any thoughts on what to try next? I don't believe any of the weapons used thus far have had any +stats on them for any of the weapon upgrades. a running trend maybe?

I'm in the same boat Demetrius, I've tried all those as well as a Military Axe. I'm trying to see if someone I know has a Neckchopper so I can try trading that. If it's not a Neckchopper I'm about out of ideas.
Edit: I tried a neckchopper and that didn't work either. I seriously have no idea which.
Edit2: I'm starting to think the greataxe is bugged or something. I even tried downgrades of the gaxe and she still didn't take anything. I'm thinking of maybe having a Kheten made but that seems awfully high and its a huge loss to make.

BTW, upon completing the Genkai quest (and calling my NPC twice... dunno if that matters), Luto gave me the 3rd weapon upgrade dialogue. Even if you can trade directly to your NPC before, maybe you still have to wait until this talk with Luto?

callable in crawlers nest, and sea serpant grotto, also by talking to my npc about quest she told me she has an important mission in the empy and that if i go she will join me, i got a party during this, so i havent been to any prommy yet to see if anything special happens, ill update it later (level 38)

I had a kheten crafted, and no that doesn't work either
Leucos Voulge does not work as well
