Just buy a notebook with a well-known Graphics Chipset (Radeon, Geforce) that DOES NOT have shared memory and you'll be fine.

Id reccomend one probably with a amd athlonXP mobile 2500+ or better with maybe like a geforce 6600GO which offers the perfect mix of performance/battery life.
Something like 512mb of RAM should work.
Just make sure u dont get like a Celeron system or a Duron or anything. And try to aim for at least a 6200GO chipset or maybe a radeon chipset like a ATi mobility x700 would work great too.
If you want to go for last gens cards (which should work great with ffxi still) I would reccomend an ATi mobility 9600. Dont go nVidia for the FX 5xxx series because frankly they sucked compared to the ATi.
And this is coming from a geforce 6800GT user so im not ATi biased or anything.
Hope this helped

It's hard to find a laptop that can run things like FFXI decently. I put FFXI on mine once, but it seriously blew for these reasons:
1. It would only run at the lowest possible settings.
2. It still ran like crap.
3. It made the laptop run so hot it shut down.
So I uninstalled it and refilled the 6 gigs it took with "questionable material".
I think the one thing you're going to want to avoid as well is "Intel Extreme" graphics or whatever it is, because they won't work with FFXI.

Dell Inspiron 8600... spent about 1300 us dollars on it. runs perfectly. hardly any graphics lag at 1280x800 1280x800
Radeon 9600 Pro turbo 128
can't go wrong with this machiene. also when newer video cards come out. you can get a better video card instead of buying a new laptop. trust me it's the best

I have been playing on my laptop since November of '03 and I never had any problems playing and I have the settings set up pretty high. You will definatly need to buy a fan that your laptop will sit on while the game is running. The game is very tough on the laptops so do what you can to keep your computer very cool.
