Corrupted Files. Useless GMs. Boredom and Lawsuits.

Alright... a few months ago my character got stuck in a zone and I was unable to log on him at all. Couldn't figure it out, but it was my PC cuz I got on him from my girlfriend's PC just fine. So I completely uninstalled FFXI (didn't have CoP yet). Re-installed, it worked fine. About a month ago the same thing happened in a different zone. So I uninstalled, re-installed, and I couldn't do the update. GMs were useless both times, gave me no help at all, and told me to re-install. So I deleted FFXI and CoP and played when I could from time to time on my girlfriend's PC.

Just last week I finally had some time, re-installed FFXI, did the update, re-installed CoP, it made me re-do the update (for the love of god). Worked fine for a week, I booked it from 68 > 70, tanked some gods, skilled staff to 200+, and was generally happy with my online life.

Tonight I go to within 800 exp of level 71, party disbanded, I figured I would do an ENM to level. Got disconnected mid teleport-dem... Tried to log back on, disconnected and PC froze. Repeat, same thing. Log on mule, call GM...

"Well I see this has happened before, I'd suggest you do what you did then."
"I re-installed then... that's ridiculous."
"It's probably corrupt files, you should speak to tech-support and re-install."

GMs are fucking useless. I love FFXI, I have a real life and all, but I enjoy playing FFXI when I can and I have some good friends online, so this is pissing me off. I don't have time to spend 30 hours uninstalling/reinstalling/updating/failed updates/updating every week and a half. Nor do I have the patience. I'm going to bomb SE if they don't tell me how to fix this permanently.

Anyway, I guess this is mostly a rant, but I was hoping that someone would be more technically experienced than I am or have had a similar problem. Is there a reason I'm getting corrupted files repeatedly? Could the corruption be POL itself (the one thing I just now realized I never uninstalled)? Does god hate me?

I would just Re-install again, your entire computer.

Reformatting is always fun, and healthy.

My advice: reinstall, and backup all the dat files so you can try to replace them if it happens again. It should work in theory, but I've never done it. Worth a shot though.

OMG I agree with you...GM's are worthless. Have you tried sending an email through playonline? That goes directly to SE without going through customer support and GMs. Maybe you could get some answers from them. Worth a shot at any rate. Hope you get back on m8 biggrin.gif.

Just change the POL folder name to POL2 then reinstall, and when you are done installing, just copy the POL2 contents into the PlayOnline folder. When it goes to update, it will say something like weird install, and make you go through check files. It will take roughly 45 minutes on a dsl connection. I think I had to Download a total of 20 files? But had to check files of 20k files.

Just remember... GMs are not tech support. They really don't have many answers at all and are just every-day gamers like the rest of us. They're there to solve player-based issues and not technical concerns. They were giving ou the best advice they could come up with. And from the sound of it, only the files associated with your main character are having the problem. Your mules have never had trouble?

Have you edited any .dat files for appearance or used and 3rd party software? I also agree with Vindictive about a system reformat. Even if it doesn't solve the issue with your character, at least you're running on a faster, cleaner system. I also suggest using playonline's tech support rather than in-game.

Well I understand the GMs aren't tech support and are just doing their job, it's just frustrating. I've never changed any .dats or messed with any of that stuff, and the only software I use with FF is fraps. I guess it wouldn't hurt to reformat but I'm not entirely sure where my disks are for that, I've had this PC a few years. Maybe time for a new one :/

Heres an idea...You probably have a virus/trojan/malicious something on your computer. Scan for them using virus software. Also, if you are running with Anti-Virus software in the background, it could cause problems, as it detects pol.exe or whatever to be a trojan. I'd suggest reformatting before you re-install if nothing comes up.
