So how exactly does this help me make money? I'm not really noticing increased amounts of drops. I know that it'll help me get the rare drop from NM's but I hope that's not the only thing treasure hunter is good for.

Everyone always says that once a thf reaches lvl 15 they won't have money problems anymore... well i got to 15 and got my treasure hunter ability and was kind of expecting to get tons of items per kill the way people were talking... but i don't

Treasure hunter helps in the sense that it increases the probability of a monster to drop rare items. so maybe it will help you in quests like the subjob quest / kazham airship pass quest etc...
Edit: at lvl 5 you get gilfinder right? that actually helps a lot too, when you go killing beastmen of course. Treasure hunter is good for getting drops, but you dont always get want you want / need. Try stealing more often
.
To test you treasure hunter skills, try killing amethyst quadavs and see how many backplates you can get per 20 amethyst quadavs.... I clear the whole palborough mines and usually get 4, and I dont have treasure hunter. If you actually get more than ten, then the treasure hunter you have has greatly helped.

Treasure Hunter doesn't necessarily get you more items (altho sometimes it does seem that). It seems as more frequent items.
Treasure Hunter 2 i was expecting to find like 30 Emperor Hairpins from killing a rarab (j/k), but its just an upgrade from TH1. Altho weak at first, I eventually did realize a difference. Hunting for that stupid Leaping Lizzie I found around 50+ Lizard Tails in the process. Almost every Rock Lizard would give me a tail.
Also... crystals... wow... we were getting atleast 3-5 crystals for every kill in Crawlers Nest.
(Edit: I think that has something to do with how many ppl have Signet too though)

I started leveling a samurai sub job last week, and I got an enemy to drop something MAYBE once ever 7 enemies. My thief always gets something dropped within 3 enemies. Not only that, but it becomes a lot easier to find uncommon drops like gob equipment and Quadav backplates to sell. People without treasure hunter just don't find those items very often.
Also, most monsters only drop one thing at a time; worms, yagudos, bees, and sheep are the most often to drop multiple items, but even then it doesn't happen often, once again, non-thieves almost never see multiple drops.

Crystals are completely dependant on how many people in the party have signet cast on them. If all 6 have signet, the most crystals you can get per fight is 6. If one person doesn't have signet, the most is 5, etc. As for TH being a help...yes. It does help quite a bit. If you kill a 100 orcs in Ghelsba, you'd find maybe..1 or 2 equipments they drop (scale, leather, etc). With TH, you'd find at least 5. Ok..you'd probably find more then that but that's just rough comparison. TH indeed DOES help.

Well TH does work well. I hunted Lizards in dunes w/ WAR. I killed ~33 of them. I didn't get a single skin drop.
Enter my RDM friend, she subs a level 16 THF. She clears about 25 or so Lizards and had a stack of skins. I cried when I heard about that and thus began my arduous task of leveling my own TH THF

TH 2 works even better
Just two days ago I was in farming Yagudos for silver beastcoins (I was actually killing them for the coins instead of trying to steal from the harder ones). I would make big chains since it was more fun to do it this way. In a few hours, I ended up with around 15 silver beastcoins (1 or 2 were stolen I think). Not to mention the level 50 WHM ( I think their name was Zara?) my friend and I invited into the PT since they were looking for Yagudo beads. I think they went home happy with all the yagudo beads that dropped that day ^^

In another thread Leaks suggested that Treasure Hunter is all about the Thief in the party getting the killing blow.
A little bit skeptical, I traveled to the Highlands to go ram hunting with a lv 42 pld friend. For the first tremor ram, he got the last hit in, and it dropped 1 skin and 1 horn. Second ram, he got the last hit again, same drop.
On the third ram, I Hasted myself and got the last hit... 4 skins and 2 horns dropped. Fourth ram, used Haste again, got the last hit, and got 4 more skins, 2 more horns. By then even my skeptical friend was believing this theory.
Tonight I was helping someone get the Giddeus Key for the Kazham quest... everyone else in the party kept getting the last hit, and no key dropped. When I finally got in the last hit, the key immediately dropped.
Also, did anyone notice that you get Treasure Hunter 1 and 2 right before you need rare items? (subjob quest, then level cap quest) I wonder if SE did that on purpose. Hmm... :O_o

Heh, well, I was having issues getting Elshimo Marble so that I could get Teleport Yhoat. Got a lvl 50 thf friend to come and in 2 hours or so we had marbles for the entire party *boggle*. So i'm a believer. Granted it was th2, but even th1 helps a lot.

I've
noticed when farming in Sarutabaruta and Gustaberg that when I used my Boomerang to One-hit
kill enemies that they seemed to drop much less often, as if Treasure hunter hadn't kicked
it. I didn't used to feel this descrepancy when it would take 2 or more throws (even when
I never engaged the enemy). Anyone else see this?
an Example from Gustaberg
12
worms with boomerang (2 flintstones)
5 worms with dagger (4 flintstones 1 copper)

You
guys are missing something about Treasure Hunter it seems like to me. Treasure Hunter does
NOT mean 100% drop rate. Your level STILL effects how often items will drop. Meaning if
you solo Even Match monsters, there's a higher % drop rate in terms of items (I don't mean
crystals). So if you one shot monsters, it's not actually TH not kicking in but your high
level restricting you from getting as much drops as you normally would.
Also the ram
thing...that's invalid. Because the Ram drops randomly from 0-7 (maybe 8 or 9 or more)
items at a time. Regardless of whether you have TH or not. The only way TH will help in
that situation is increase the odds slightly in your favour that more items will drop.
Getting the last hit means didly squat from what i've noticed.
Think about a coin.
It has a heads and a tails. So if you flip the coin 10 times, it should be heads 5 times
and tails 5 times...but we all know that doesn't happen. Sometimes, it can be 6 heads and
4 tails or even 10 heads and no tails at all. It's all based on luck. Having Treasure
Hunter is like giving you a better ability to judge whether the coin will land as heads or
tails.

I never
thought TH or TH2 was 100% drop rate. I've killed many many monsters and not had any
goodies drop. About the "last hit" thing, I was just sharing my experience in case
others wanted to try it out and see the results. If nothing else, me getting the last hit
certainly won't *decrease* the drop rate.
There have been times when I've gotten
only one or two items when soloing Rams, or the Yagudo/Quadav/Orcs have not dropped the key
I wanted. TH still is going to help overall and that % drop rate increase is nice no matter
how exactly it works.

I'm glad that
you didn't take my post as a flame because i'm just trying to clear misconceptions. And
you're right, TH helps over all. It doesn't work on the last hit though from what I
noticed...mainly since I rarely get the last hit and I usually find the same amount of
treasures to drop as when I do get the last hit.

When I sub
THF and go out hunting too weak/easy check elementals I see some 1 cluster drops, mostly 2
cluster drops, and rarely I'll get 3 off each ele. Seems that when I get caught out with
my PT sub BLM I get 1 cluster nearly every time. Does it feel like the game has like a %
chance of item drop and keeps checking until it gets a no item result? And TH just widens
the % a bit? Sure is goofy to get 2 rabbit hides and a hare meat off the same bunny...

Piece of
clay? That's not a level cap item that I know of. The three level cap items for 50 drop of
Exorays (exoray mold), Liches (papyrus), and the bomb things in Garlaige (bomb coal). That
clay you got is probably for a quest or something.

Likewise, I know that TH doesn't make 100% drops, but I rarely encounter less than 1 drop
per 3 enemies. The fact that I kill 12 worms getting almost nothing then using a dagger got
the ores I was looking for plus more flints than I cared to have suggests that there is some
kind of difference. Either distance from the enemy, being engaged vs. not, or having your
main weapon do the last hit. I really hope level has nothing to do with drops as now I'm
worried that waiting for TH2 for Lizzie and Valkurm Emp might have backfired.

is a good sub for many reasons, especially if you need to farm for a job that you are going
to take all the way. Thief 1 doesn't provide 100% drops but does add to the frequency just
like someone posted. I've had the same freak accident with encounterin mutant rabbits with
2 or three hides, unless they swallowed another rabbit.
rdm60/thf30 is what I'm
gunning for currently so that I have access to the following.
Gilfinder
Evasion
Bonus
Treasure Hunter 1
Trick Attack
Sneak Attack
Flee
If you go a long
way in any job thief sub is awesome. Its also ultra cool as a main when people do it right.
Unfortunatly people have only now started to like thieves on midgard.
