The Way of the Monk

Q: Do I need Ochiudo's Kote?
A: For the most part, yes. This question is asked regularly because the price tag is extremely high. It is high both as a result of high demand for a powerful item and because the item itself is generally monopolized by gil-sellers. Be aware, however, if that those same gil-sellers stopped monopolizing, the price would very likely rise due to a decrease in the supply.

might not be such a good idea to put into the heads of would-be monks, cause then they're gonna not read stickies and post annoying threads about it =P

I'm guessing from the Dragoon subjob section, you actually haven't tried Jump on a Monk tongue.gif 300-400 dmg Jumps humorous?

Lets not make this a subjob argument match, and have it overshadow the good info.

pathwriter :
-Store TP I (Job Trait)
Obtained: Monk Level 20 (Samurai 10)
Notes: Increases TP gained by 1 point per strike. Given that Monks attack twice in a round, this equates to potentially 2 extra TP per round with a possible extra point from a Kick Attack after level 51. This affects the first two strikes of weapon skills but does not affect successive strikes.

-Store TP II (Job Trait)
Obtained: Monk Level 60 (Samurai 30)
Notes: Increases TP gained from Store TP I by 1 point. This seems to be occasionally unreliable.

The reason that Store TP II trait might seem unreliable at times, is because it isn't as powerful as Store TP I. Kinda like Marital Arts I is the most powerful basic trait for Monks.

The first trait grants 'Store TP +10'
The second trait grants 'Store TP +5'

How it works exactly is each Store TP multiplies your base TP gain by 1.01.

So a Monk with both traits will have an equation like this:

(Normal TP gain) x 1.15 = Actual TP gain

-Focus
Obtained: Level 25
Duration: 2 minutes
Cooldown: 5 minutes
Description: Enhances accuracy.
Notes: The JA that other melee wish they had, Focus will give you a 2 minute burst of Accuracy. As with other JAs, this is percentile-based and becomes more effective relative to how accurate you are to begin with. Good Monks quickly learn how to save and use this ability for maximum effectiveness in XP and all other situations. Best used around XP Chain #4 to increased accuracy, thus increase damage, and reduce time needed to kill a target.

I was always under the impression that Focus gave a straight up 20 acc, 25 with Temple Crown?

Very nice faq. Just one thing I noticed though: Vit is a modifier on Asuran Fists also. I believe it's simply that whichever is higher, vit or str, that stat is chosen.

This is a salient point if you are using meats in KRT and have sacrificed a few str slots to beef up your acc, (e.g. when you're lacking a Brd) Using VIT as a stand-in modifier expands your options somewhat - Genbu's Kabuto for example.

I think using the shura head or the O.hat is better than using the genbu kabuto.

EDIT:
Unless you are talking about macroing genbu kabuto, in which case it would only be good if you only have the o.hat but no shura head.

Samskeyti, thank you for clearing that up. Can you point to where that's been proven? It would explain certain inconsistencies with Subtle Blow, as well.

As regards Focus... every Job Ability in the game that boosts anything does so on a percentile basis. Working with percentages automatically prevents any one ability from being over-powered one minute and too weak the next (example: 20 Accuracy at level 25 should make a Monk never miss, whereas at 75 it's just an ok boost). While I don't have hard numbers, I am assured that Focus is a percentage-based ability.

Genbu's Kabuto for Asuran Fists? No. First of all, the damage modifiers on weapon skills are not half as powerful as people think they are. Secondly, STR is not only a primary modifier in all Hand-to-Hand weapon skills, it raises the fSTR of the equation which, at least in terms of weapon skills, does not have the same sort of cap that normal melee hits have. Here's the kicker, though: Asuran Fists has a stat modifier of 50% STR or 50% VIT. Presumably, the game chooses whichever is higher. Unless you're a Paladin, you are not going to show up to an XP party with more VIT mods than STR mods and if you have so little STR gear that Genbu's Kabuto increases your VIT modifier to higher than your STR modifier, you need to rethink your gear. Additionally, considering how dependent Asuran Fists is on Accuracy, I'll take an Optical Hat or Shura Zunari-Kabuto long before I use Genbu's Kabuto.

The only time to macro Genbu's Kabuto in is for Chakra and Dragon Kick. With Dragon Kick, I'd still only macro it in when using SATA. Either way, VIT is a modifier in Dragon Kick but it's an and situation, rather than an or situation, so if you've got nothing better to put in that slot, a little VIT will make an incremental difference.

Another question...in regards to macroing in items for weaponskills (since this is a current topic of discussion), is it more beneficial to macro out Attack gear in exchange for STR or keep what +Attack you have?

In my experience, and I think the formulas agree with me, STR is best for most MNK weaponskills. I leave some attack gear on of course because it is unavoidable (amemit+1 and kote in my case), but I always tend to do significantly more damage with my STR gear macro. But you will miss the accuracy, seeing as all MNK WS are two hits minimum, and you double attack somewhat often during a WS. It is not efficient to take off all of your accuracy gear.

Attack will help do damage with weapon skills, too. For whatever reason, though, the way that weapon skill damage is calculated takes a lot more from primary stats rather than secondary. Personally, though, I never much believed in macro'ing gear on purely for a weapon skill, particularly because Monk is about damage-over-time and as fun as Asuran Fists for 900-1300 damage is... it's a drop in the bucket compared to the 2-5 strikes for ~100 damage every round. All I ever did for a WS was macro-swap Temple Gloves for Boost then let fly. Comparing Temple Gloves to Ochiudo's Kote, by the way, Kote was still stronger in the WS, though I know that Pallas outperforms Kote.

swap in temple gloves for boost, put back your ochi or melee gloves, you get bout 70 atk boost, i've notice this had increased my ws dmg slightly.

What about food + boost + berserk + armor + warcry stacking. I imagine the attack from armor is factored in before the percentage is taken, but will your boost be bigger if berserk is on? Will your Warcry be bigger if Berserk is on? I could test this really easily, but I'm at work and I wanna know now!
