It's not the
biggest deal, nor does it make that much of a difference (every single JP I've pt'd with has been able to easily
differentiate the two), but the extraneous "u"'s that Westerner's favor using so much when pronouncing Romaji is
infact incorrect spelling when writing.
It began as a tool to help Westerner's more easily pronounce the
ending vowels of many Japanese words (arigato(u) is the most common, yoroshik(u) is another). Pick up any
Japanese-English dictionary or Rough Guide to Japanese book at your local book store and you'll see this
descrepancy.
A small point, irrelevant to some. Fine for pronounciation, but technically incorrect
spelling.

Odd.
I've seen every
spelling of arigato in hiragana from the Japanese themselves in the
game:
arigato
arigatou
arigato~
arigatou~
etc.

How is it extraneous? If you look at
ありがとう in japanese, it's spelled with the u at the end. Are you thinking of
the opposite? Where technically the correct spelling of Tokyo is actually Toukyou?

Probably of
no use to anyone but I want to know:
How would you go about saying
" Please"
?

Question....
Dozo Yoroshiku.
The First o in "Dozo" is a long Vowel. Ive seen the long O voiced in
different ways, and spelled in different ways...
- Just Dozo, Arigato
- Douzo, Arigatou
- Doozo,
Arigatoo
Which is the most acepted? I usually like to keep it with one O. If i could find the symbols for
the long vowels, it would be better

Since Elizabet has explain how to talk to your JP PT members in Romanji, I'm gonna type out a few of the most
commonly used words/phrases in Japanese so that you guys can somewhat read what they are saying ^^
*note:
you would need a regional language decoder to read these. I personally use NJStar. There are others but you'd
have to search for it ^^:
1) Greetings,

One question, though:
How do you say
"Please wait" in Japanese?
Thanks in advance...

One
thing.... Kakkoii usually means smart if you say it like "anata ha/no/ga (dunno which to use) kakkoii desu."
Usually it means "You are smart". I have learned this from playing a different Japanese game and the japanese
people on there told me it meant that they were smart... not a big difference its still a complement. Anyway good
guide though ^^

"Please wait a
moment." is "Chotto matte kudasai" or "Chotto matte yo"
matte = wait
(Please correct me if I'm
wrong)

In roomaji, you'd
use "wa" which is really the character "ha"
so, I guess, either is acceptable, but I personally use "wa"
^^;
wa (ha character) = subject marker
no = possesive (anata no neko = your cat)
ga = hard for me to
explain x.x (boku wa anata ga suki desu = I like you)

Hi all this is my first time posting. Some of you
may be familiar with my Japanese/Nihongo Guide: http://shigemo.com/FFXI/nihongo_guide.html . From time to time I
search on Google to see if my page is listed, and this time I noticed this forum. I thought it was interesting to
find a topic with the subject: Elizabet's Guide to FFXI Japanese language.
So, I checked it out, and my
goodness did it look familiar. Then, in tiny letters I saw "Written by Shigemo of shigemo.com". Um, yay?
In any case, THANK YOU to those who acknowledged my site. I put quite a bit of my extra time to make this
site and keep it updated. I also recruited my best friend to help me with editing to make sure it was
comprehensive, and mistake-free. (He's nisei - second generation Japanese, and I'm sansei - third generation).
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail them to kristy@shigemo.com. You can also
visit my blog: http://www.livejournal.com/users/shigemo_design for more commentary on this guide.
Thank you
once again to Pikapuff, Laucian and anyone else acknowledging the actual site.

First a
short introduction so I don't sound like some "know-it-all". lolz I'm the "azn_lion" listed on Shigemo's
site...the one that helped her with the guide. I tend to be a bit lazy when she asks me questions about Japanese
and I half-heartedly checked her work for her...correcting her here and there. There may be SOME mistakes (I
recently went through the guide again and corrected the mistakes I saw so please check again for an updated guide.
^^) but I think I caught most of them.
Chinami ni ore ha nikkei/nisei nanode...nihongo ha toriaizu kanpeki
kana? (Just to let you know, I'm a second generation Japanese/American and my Japanese is pretty much perfect?)
That being said...some corrections on the corrections listed in this thread.
"Romanji" wouldn't be
spelled or pronounced this way. It's definitely "romaji". However...when speaking it's pronounced
"roumaji/roomaji/ro-maji".
Onorgul is right...when saying words like "As h i ta" the "h" is not needed.
Using the IME, if you write it out as "asita" the Japanese comes out the same way. "si"="shi"
A direct
translation of "Doozo yoroshiku" isn't "please give me advice". It's more along the lines of "please take care
of me"
"W"="warau/warai" It's basically the same as lol. Used only in chat/bbs/text
messages/internet.
"Nihongo wa benkyou sita" is grammatically incorrect. In addiction, it's in the past
tense. If you want to say you're "learning Japanese" it would be....."Nihongo wo benkyou site
imasu".
"ioio" isn't "no problem". It's actually "ieie" which isn't an abbreviation. "ie" is basically
"no". So when they say "ieie" they're saying "no no". It has more of the feel of "No no...it's no
problem"
"gozaimasu" is added when you're trying to be more polite. Japanese has different degrees of
politeness. "Arigato" or "Omedetou" is acceptable on their own once you get to know the people you're with.
Though it really depends. Some people don't use "Keigo" (polite japanese) in the game. This might be due to the
age of the player.
WC is the abbreviation for bathroom. (on the doors of public restrooms in Japan
you're likely to see this) Japanese has a lot of terms taken from not just America but from Europe as well.
When speaking though....we use "toire" which is just a Japanese pronounciation of the word "toilet".
"を" or "wo" is written out like this way for a reason when you use romaji. Japanese players WILL
understand even if you write "o", but "wo" IS actually the correct way to write it out. If using the IME you type
out "o" you'll get the hiragana ”お” which would be incorrect.
In addition....it's the same for
"wa" and "ha". In phrases like "Watashi no namae ha ____" or "Watashi ha _____ desu" the "ha" could be
substituted for "wa" and Japanese people would still understand you. However...."ha" is actually the correct
way to write it out. If you used "wa" in the Japanese IME, you'd get the wrong character. (I know there are some
discrepancies in Shigemo's guide, but I was too lazy to fix it all. lolz)
"roomaji o yomimasuka?" would
translate to "will you read roman lettering?" The correct way to say "Do you read roman lettering" would be
"roomaji o yoMEmasuka?" or "Romaji wo yoMEmasuka?"
Also it would be "Boku ha gakkou no Nihongo Ichi kurasu
ni ITTEmasu". I know if you were to directly translate it...."ikimasu"="I'm going", but it also implies a "now".
So if you say "Boku ha/wa gakkou no Nihongo Ichi kurasu ni ikimasu" you're actually saying something along the
lines of "I'm going to go to my school's Japanese 1 class".
As for "u" being extraneous...in the
examples you gave...they aren't. "Yoroshiku" and "arigatou" are most definitely spelled with a "u". Though you
can write out arigato without the "u"...."yoroshik" doesn't mean anything at all.
"Kakkoii" doesn't mean
"smart". It generally means "cool/handsome". Though just like in english....many things can be "cool". For
instance....I could tell you I have an IQ of 200 and you could say...."wow...cool". It doesn't necessarily mean
that "cool"="smart".
Whew....*wipes brow*...I think that's it for now. I hope I haven't offended anyone.
I just wanted to clear up any misconceptions or mistakes you might have had.
If you have any questions,
feel free to ask, though like I said before...I tend to be lazy about this type of thing, and I have no idea when
I'll be back to check on this thread. lolz Your best bet would be to ask Shigemo at her site.

I'd like to
make a note A friend (Yuukey) told me that
"My Japanese is not good – Watashi no Nihongo wa yokunai desu"
sounds negative, I'm not sure what he meant by it but he said
"Nihongo sukoshi wakarimasu" would be better to
say.
