For starting the game war/mnk or war/thf are excellent. War/mnk if you plan on being a main tank and having more HP or war/thf for being a continued damage dealer. Once you hit level 30 you have your choice in what you want to do.

Monk would be your best bet for starting out, and I'd level the sub first, it just holds you over til 30.
So start out in san, and level monk. It levels quickly because its got two attacks and tons of health, kill outside in West/East Ron til level 6 or so then cautiously try making your way to the Ghelsba outpost til 11, then off to Valk. When you hit 18 with monk you can do the subjob quest THEN start leveling war. Then you don't have to worry about going back to ever level your subjob to max your main unless you plan on carrying warrior past 30.

elvaan isn't really a good warrior.. imo because of low dex, but anyways if u plan on lvling war high best choice for subjob would either be ninja or mnk imo.
ninja so u can use 2 1h axes + utsusemi: ichi (blink) so u can blinktank
mnk for boost / higher hp / mnk also will give u higher dex/agi/str which is nice bonus esp the dex if you're elvaan, also chakra / counter attack etc higher level
but i'm not a tank i'm just going from speculation,

elvaan have low DEX but higher STR=MOST DAMAGING, u can always buy DEX gear, and eat DEX food till u get money to buy DEX gear, I started out as Elvaan War, and now im DRK, DEX and Accuracy gear make up the loss of DEX, also sub THF for a better bonus with DEX and Damage

Yeah... Elvaan rule all...
around the lvl 20 range... 18 actually... if you are going to be using a Great Sword... the Braveheart is a good weapon... awesome stats... raises your DEX and everything and Accuraccy... I don't miss nearly as much... rather seldom do I miss now ^^
I love this sword... :boing

yup, braveheart is the way to go at lvl 18.
(greatest movie of all times too)
as far as a sub goes, I went with thf because I moved on to drg
once my war hit lvl 30. If you are going to be moving on to a dmg dealing class, definately go with thf since sneak attack + WS inflict major damage. Also if you are going to be a drk, many say that drg has an advantage because they can shed hate with high jump, but drk can shed hate with trick attack if they have thf subbed.
I may be getting a little too far ahead.
at least you made the wise choice of going with elvaan for a war

Hmm. Just found out one of the coolest combos. 75WAR/37NIN, you get to use Blink 1 & 2. could be just as good as a Tank as a Dmg dealer.... maybe if you can duel wield Kraken CLub.... then holy shit...... ><

Well im going to agree...Being a Elvaan Warrior is pretty counter productive. Truthfully, your gonna miss alot. This is bad no matter what route you go in...
Protective Tank = Not your full potential hate drawn to you because your missiong
Damage dealer = Your not gonna be dealing damage
So yea, if you plan to be elvaan, go for it...I support not being a stat watcher. However, keep in mind that your choice will yield consequences. Just be ready for them, and best of luck...

well i have managed fine with an elf WAR didnt really worry about the dex thing when i started doesnt really effect me that much now best wpn i have found to help this out is Gaxe then when you start a fight with an IT mob in a party you use your TP at the start of the fight to buff (shield break lowers evasion and then the party hits more often too
) the STR does help alot esp when you are partying with a pld and not required to go main tank.... just whack on berserk and go wild heh heh oh yeah and warrior sub monk = boost and berserk fantastic for playing at damage dealer

I'm not sure what DEX will do for a WAR. My WAR is 33 now and will probably level it again when my friend's BRD get up to my level soon. I have had some extra DEX but it didn't do "jack." However, increasing VIT and/or STR solidifies my ability to become a great 2nd tank in a party with a PLD or another WAR.
2HD Axe is very nice with WAR plus the WSs give greater options for Renkei. However, 2HD Swd is not too shabby either. Incidentally, AF1 for a WAR is some 1HD Axe which is why I see alot of WARs level that skill up. Not sure how beneficial that may be ... but you still have good WS with that.
1HD Swd if you're gonna go the way of a PLD. Plus 1HD Swd is still the trusted Renkei participant in the game (if anything, to bridge any gaps between funky WSs).

1H sword, axe, great axe, and polearm are what I try and keep leveled. 1H axe really picks up at later levels especially 55 plus when you get rampage thats a 5 hit WS and from what I hear the 1h axe questable WS is alot better than the great axe ws 70+ =/ Kind of a bummer as I like the idea of using great axes but I guess dual weilding 2 axes will have to do!

thing is as you level up your need to tank isn't needed at all, but your need to be a damage dealer is, and you need higher dex. As you get higher you'll need to spend alot of cash on +dex so you don't miss your swings, and if you're using a 2h weapon, or subbing ninja and going dual axe, then you're going to have alot of delay.
but in all honest for a tank it doesnt really matter what race you pick, any faults you can make up for with your equipment.

Smurv is absolutely correct regarding stat deficincies due to race, here... I think the only race I'd PERSONALLY say would make a substandard War would be Taru, but even that can be overcome by smart playing and the right equipment.
As far as your subjob goes, you will DEFINITELY want to go with Mnk... and you may not ever want to drop it, really. There are other good subs (thf is excellent for the damage once you hit 30 with War, and its evasion is nice too), but IMO Mnk is the ultimate subjob until 30, and ought to remain viable beyond it. Its abilities fill out a War's complement nicely; where a War gains an early defense bonus and a lot of strength, then an attack bonus later on and a GREAT Double-strike, Mnk adds great evasion, Counter (one of the most useful defensive abilities a War can have), Boost, stupendous Vitality, and has TONS of HP.
The thing is to decide whether you want to be a tank-inclined War or a Damage-inclined War; I went with the latter route for 30 levels, using a Greataxe instead of 1h-and-shield, and as a Galkan I generally found myself more than able to main-tank as well as any Pld (I feel sorta bad about that, now, since I realize how hard it was on Plds I played with at the time). In fact, I really recommend just going with the Greataxe; it's your best weapon skill, even though you start with a sword, and with the War/Mnk job mix you'll be stacking a lot of extra attacks that do really GOOD damage (this goes for both Galka and Elvaan, who are the Str hogs of the game), what with Counter and Double Strike going off every so often. The effects of these two skills are kinda muted if you're 1-handing, because you'll be doing lower damage-per-hit, and not gaining as much tp per Double-strike as you would with a 2-handed weapon.
Of course, as an Elvaan you're not as durable as a Galkan, but you're still a PRIME heavy-hitter; don't listen to all those folks who say that the low DEX means you won't be a good War; if that were the case, Galka and Elvaan would be HOPELESS races, since they're primarily melee-oriented. I've never had more than a useless +1 to my Dex at any given time, and I've rarely suffered for it; I'd imagine that in higher levels it becomes much more of an issue, but as mentioned before it's something that can be fixed with gear.
Good luck!
