DONT FORGET US BLMS!
WHMs can melee and should if there isnt an AOE and if their arent any brds.
Same with BLMs (my dagger skill is almost capped)

Having a bard isn't a problem if you watch the battle carefully and make sure you're far from him in his melee stuff casting stage and run back to catch ballad

Everyone should melee if:
1. The mob has no AOE.
2. You trust the tank to keep hate.
3. You trust the rest of the party (Linkshell, Static, friends, etc...)
4. There is no BRD in the party.
Yes, I only deal 25 damage to those beetles and crawlers, but i hit 6-8 times a fight (I spend a lot of time casting spells). That's an additional 150-200 damage, which helps us bring the mob down faster.
I only melee with my static party (PLD, DRG, RDM, WHM, BLM, RNG).

Sorry, I was away this weekend to continue this thread.
It's nice to see the support here!
Anyway, here's a situation where AOE mobs are ok.
Just because there is an AOE doesn't mean you have to stay back.
The other day my party was fighting lizards in the Den of Rancor and the party leader tells me repeatedly to stay back because this is mob has an AOE.
Well....he was right it has an AOE, fireball, which did a whopping 100-130 dmg to everyone.
I'm sitting here trying to explain, I would cast curaga anyway on the party if this AOE went off, so really does it waste any MP if I got hit? NO.
So remember also, sometimes just because there is an AOE doesn't mean you can't melee.
If your going to cast a -ga spell anyway it wastes no mp. Now this is mostly for the higher levels because if your low level -ga might mean death.
But this is yet another person that needs to recieve knowledge from the MWA!

Not only that, we wear armor. Doublets, gambisons, Holy Breastplate... we wear midline armor that allows us to take a hit. My HP is still higher than my MP, by a good 100 so far.

I love WHM melee. How the hell do you get to enjoy the bliss of Hexastrike if you're always sitting in the back wasting away?

In a group that doesnt require spam healing of cure4 or whatever (i.e., relatively low dmg mobs), I typically do better meleeing, for some reason I just access my spells quicker and easier than if I was sitting back. I use a gamepad so that might be part of the reason, I'm very much into ATB, and sitting back hitting a cure macro just doesnt feel very ATB to me

Yea, because I think every BLM with us went AFK just as I pulled one, so the ONLY damage was me and Itchy's PLD.. it blew at 90% health left, and I'd been trying to pull hate off the PLD because he was too low to tank it, I was going to blink/stoneskin tank it. Anjin's connection had dropped
Fucking thing ripped through my stoneskin and barfira to do over 900 damage to me.

Ummm.... why would a whm ever need to melee in a party?..

Posted 14 June 2004 - 03:44 PM
Couple reasons:
1. To kill the mob faster (more chaining, less mp spent on curing)
2. To keep their skills up
3. To contribute more by taking on a new challenge
4. What almost every WHM wants..Hexa Strike
You don't NEED a WHM to melee, but (if their good and it doesn't effect their main job in a party) Every bit helps.

You'd be surprised. Those hammers are midline weapons.

A party I've been levelling with recently is Nin Pld Sam Sam Whm Brd (Or possibly RdM), and we've had no trouble at all. The way we handled our Bard was to have our Pld and WhM stand on the same side, so the Bard could easily catch them at the outer range of Ballad without hitting any of us that don't use MP. We even managed to pull off a few Club SCs for Fusion with Holy and Banish II MBs, and consistently got Chain #4 on ITs. I say go for it, if you know what you're doing!

Hehe.... well I'm a SMN/WHM.
I call the Avatar, have it engage, use the available WHM debuffs, engage myself, and heal the party when necessary. I must say it's quite fun.
Though, I'm only level 12 so yeah that could change XD
But I'll join!!!!!
