RDM melee contributes positively to any party, and can be a DD on the same level as DRG and WAR. When I melee on my RDM, I do more per hit than the PLD not even counting my en-spells! And my vorpals do 400-500 consistently.
So I say, phooey to all you naysayers!

I managed to persuade a party into letting me melee, o_0... I can't multi-task for shit, so I stopped

well since I can stick slow and blind on a mob without switching anything, I just do those, hast my one DD and slap the mob around.
I tried sticking paralyze, but even WITH an Ice staff, it still got resisted at least 70% of the time, so I stopped bothering. My time in a party is better spent contributing to damage dealt with my sword.

yeah, its annoying when a prty doesnt realize the dmg potential of a good rdm. I havnt done the job yet. But I've seen some rdms in action and they can do very well with their enfeeb and their swords. Blind alone works wonders. Slap on a mithkabob an/or sushi and your good to go. Plus, another source of dmg is always good. makes the fight go faster. IMO, thats a good thing. But then, again, as you can see, I havnt gotten to higher lvls yet. Therefore, I dont the situation for that up there.

Rofl at this Sticky. I thought some n00b created a new thread for RDM Melee and was expecting it to be locked already. But I just saw its a Sticky thread. So Roflao again.
RDM do w/e you want. Go Melee if you want, just don't be surprised if the leader send you a "/t See you again".

RDM melee, like all RDM abilities, is situational.
if a party is fighting IT++ with no additional refresher, healer, enfeebler, the RDM will most likely detract from the party by engaging in melee. vs IT++ you won't hit unless you are melee-geared and merited in sword from a high lvl melee job.
[examples of above]
RDM NIN BLM THF RNG SAM - RDM needed for 2 refresh, enfeeble, main heal. the pt stops and starts on your MP here, so be the wise guy and rest up. the NIN handles some enfeebling, so that takes some pressure off.
RDM PLD WHM DRK SAM RNG - 4 refresh if you're on your game, you are Batman's Utility Belt here. you keep it rolling, enfeeble the crap out of the target, and save the day when an unlucky add happens or the pt needs Escape. /blm 4tw here
if a party is chaining VT to IT minus and has an additional RDM or a BRD, the RDM can usually engage in melee, and open skillchains to allow the party to reach more of its damage potential.
these parties are most often made up of a desperate band of DRG and Fenrirless SMN that are not accepted into the standard-type parties listed above. they can't reach their potential because their weaponskills don't really match up very well, or because there is not the right setup for the THF to stack SA and TA.
in the case of the THF unable to properly stack SATA, a frontline RDM can easily take opening hate with Sleep, Bind, or Blind, and mitigate the damage thru stoneskin/blink and gearswapping to heavier armor. the rest of the RDM duties follow as normal.
in the case of multiple RDM, or the mythical "RDM DD" the goal of melee is to create a renkei upon which to Magic Burst. the combination of DoT thru melee, enspell, enfeeble, Weaponskills/Job Abilities. plus any Magic Bursts in a given fight is signifigant enough to be considered for a 'DD' role, but in order to be good it requires extreme dedication and attention to detail. gear can easily cost millions just to get you started, and beyond that challenge is a further challenge in even finding a party that will accept you, or know how to play with you if they do.
the most typical problem for a 'RDM DD' is finding that their party actually needs a main healer, and assumes that you will play that way.
that's all i got. i don't care what crawls out of the muck to flame me, if you're going to sticky a melee thread, put some good info on the front page.

I dont care what they say, Ima melee if i am not bogged down by parties who have only been experienced with Rdm/War
/blm
(and /whm but thats a different story)

I for one am totally fine with a meleeing RDM. As long as it's not a mob that likes to spam AoE's and uses up unneccesary MP. As long as the RDM is able to keep up with their expected job duties (refresh, enfeebles, etc.) a meleeing RDM doesnt bother me at all. Or maybe with a NIN tank and bard in pt where the RDM is playing main healer, melee might have to wait.
But after all, why would RDM's AF1 weapon be a sword, have access to unlocking the Savage Blade WS, and be able to use Excalibur if they were never intended to melee?
