I have a question pretaining to RDM and my sword. so I will ask here.

My RDM is 68 and my sword skill is 167, I want to go solo/farm/skill up on mobs. What level do teh mobs have to be to me to proc a sword skill up? Even Match? I was messing around with Goobbue's in Rolanberry [s] but after I dinged 165 the skills ups didint come anymore, the Goobbue's there con DC+

I was thinking about messing with Leeches in the Mire they are 63-65, but I don't know.

thanks

Your target must be Even Match in regard to your weapon skill level, if I remember correctly.

BUMP...if it wasn't a sticky... Anyway...

Just to chime in on this topic as a 67WHM:

I static with a RDM and have been doing so for the past 20 levels. And we both melee.

Yes, you read that correctly.

As a WHM, I take care of main heal duties, he takes care of refresh and we both split up haste duties. We've been doing it like this for the past 20 levels.
Every once in a while, we'll have someone make a snide remark at the start, but once the PT gets rolling, it's always these people that say things like,
"I didn't expect things to go so well. That's pretty crazy." or "Did you guys just Skill chain together?! Damn, that's cool!" I constantly get on the RDM's ass to upgrade their gear and farm for more gil if they want to make it in this melee business. Nothing crazy, but he has SH, Woodsman's, Specs and swaps belts depending on what he needs. I have a lot of hand down stuff from MNK (well, just the PCC, Diabolos Earring and woodsman's rings) and just recently got a Tabin Jupon and feet+1 since I cant use my Noble's yet. Like I said, nothing crazy like Toreador's Ring or Sniper's +1. We both eat either Marinara Pizza or cheap sushi if we fight birds and we have a lame tank or DDs.

One particular time in LS chat, I asked if any DD wanted to join for a Colibri camp synced to 65 and a DRG agrees to go. The PT setup was:

PLD/DNC (they were thrilled to come /DNC), BLU/NIN, THF/NIN, DRG/WAR, RDM/BLM and me as WHM/SMN (I just recently leveled up SCH and think it would have been alot better!)

At first, the DRG was very much against the idea of both the RDM and WHM meleeing and us having no BRD for songs, but still went along with it saying, "meh, I just need some quick XP anyway."

The THF would pull a bird to camp and the PLD and I would alternate Flashes to minimize damage. Hate was hardly ever an issue since the THF would promptly Trick Attack onto the PLD(unless the RDM wanted to do a 300% TP Spirits Within, that darn show off! lol ) All in all, it was a very fun experience since the DDs didn't have to hold back; the PLD got to try out their fun subjob saying, "Honto ni {Thank you.}" (since they didnt speak much english) and the RDM and I keeping our weapons capped. There was never a sense of someone going to die and no downtime whatsoever.

After about 2 hours, we disband since the RDM and I have work and/or school the next day. As I was saying my goodbyes in LS chat, the DRG sent me a /tell saying, "I'm really impressed by that PT you put together. Did you know we were making a little over 10k xp an hour?" To which I replied,

"No kidding? I was having too much fun to notice. See ya ^^" and logged off.

I'm still pretty new at this whole Red Mage thing so I'm still open to the possibility of Red Mage melee, but last night I saw exactly why people cringe when a Red Mage pulls out their sword.

I was in Qufim BLM/RDM leveling my subjob. I end up in a party that doesn't look too bad. We've got the RDM party leader, a WHM, and some forgettable DDs. We start out on worms and slowly make our way to crabs, simple enough. All the while the Red Mage has been on the front lines with the DDs. Now I don't mind this too much, I figure we've got a White Mage, we'll be fine and if there's some emergency both the RDM and I can throw some cures around until the WHM gets back on her feet.

To put it bluntly that's not how it went down. More often than not I was the one performing RDM duties of enfeebling and tossing the occasional cure to keep someone alive. That's not to say the RDM isn't helping out on occasion, but I feel more of my mp was going towards RDM duties than blowing shit up.

Shortly after we end up at the pond camp the White Mage informs us that she's going afk for a little bit. Now with all the aggro running around the pond at that time this would have been a good time to slow down and stop to heal up. Well no, that clearly wouldn't be a good idea since we still have five players and two of them can heal. Chaos ensues. I'm now hardly doing any nuking, my mp pool is dwindling really fast and I barely manage to sleep an aggroing goblin for the team to deal with when they finish their worm.

During this I've somehow been switched over to main healer, because I'm looking at the RDM's mp pool with at least 40 mp left in it, while I'm sitting here running on empty spamming Cure 1. The guy isn't even tossing regens out. A Black Mage with Cure 1 is not a main healer. It just doesn't work that way.

Somehow we made it to some downtime and we suddenly see that the afk WHM has just lagged out. Thankfully at this point whichever melee was tanking has the sense to say he's not going to continue without a white mage. A good excuse to dissolve the party, I took it and ran like hell back to Jeuno.

About ten minutes later I ended up in a new party with a RDM that knew how to main heal and enfeeble for the party. It went much smoother.

I still think RDM melee should be allowed, but god damn, if your performance is forcing a BLM/RDM to main heal put your sword away and help keep the party from wiping.

Sadly, the community at large believes rdm's meleeing will automatically suck at life all thanks to the large number who do it, suck at it, and keep perpetuating the hate.

it's entirely possible for rdm's to keep up their duties to support a party while meleeing. can a rdm do it while main healing? possibly while at low lvl using regen, but not in today's era of ToA tp burning.

not sure if this is the best /nin melee setup, but this is what I would use ideally

if using swords (maxed merits etc):

main: joyeuse
sub: justice
ranged: virtue stones
head: w.turban
neck: fortitude torque
ear1: brutal earring
ear2: suppanomimi
body: goliard siao, or morrigan body if available
hands: dusk gloves
ring1: rajas ring
ring2: ulthalam's ring
back: cuchulain's mantle
waist: swift belt
legs: duelist tights, or haste pants (mayhaps shantotto legs)
feet: dusk feet

if using daggers (capped merits etc):

main: blau dolch
sub: joyeuse
ranged: lightning bow +1
head: w.turban
neck: love torque
ear1: brutal earring
ear2: suppanomimi
body: goliard siao or morrigan body if available
hands: dusk gloves
ring1: rajas ring
ring2: ulthalam's ring
back: cuchulain's mantle
waist: swift belt
legs: duelist tights, or haste pants (mayhaps shantotto legs)
feet: dusk feet

eat sushi for both, use enspell 1 and let melee DoT go to work with death blossom or evisceration when available
this is likely not nearly enough acc for merits, but for things like campaign or farming it should provide good entertainment.
