Season's greetings and a happy New Year!

Incidentally, a certain impetuous summoner, looking for a way to accomplish the arduous, onerous task of defeating Maat, called on Fenrir to read his fortune for the New Year. Unfortunately for him, Fenrir refused to listen, and ran outside of town instead!

Won't you lend the poor summoner a hand and help him catch Fenrir if you see him?

Fenrir claims that he just wanted to teach the inconsiderate little summoner a lesson, but apparently the avatar does plan to forgive him�c <- Typo by SE >.>;

This event is scheduled to commence on Dec. 31, 2005 at 07:00, and will last until Jan. 10, 2006 at 0:00 (PST).

If anyone has information about this "summoner" or a moogle, post it, please! I've been scouting and cannot find anything.. going outside to see if Fenrir is indeed running around.

[Event Theories]

As of yet, no moogles or event NPCs other than the Summoners and Fenrir seem to be present. Last year the "New Year fortune birds" flew around and told fortunes/gave buffs just like the Summoners are this year as the hunt down fenrir (who is symbolizing the year of the dog, which 2006 is according to the chinese zodiac).

The "New years gifts" were found in the .dat files (as Dyire posted awhile ago, right after the december update) to have different new year greetings in different languages on them. However, it has been confirmed that the items are consumable and do nothing more than give a rather long "fishing enhancement" buff.

Theories regarding the new years gifts and obtaining them

- Trading the summoners in a certain predetermined order seems to be a pretty solid theory, though we could be wrong. AF -> AF2 -> Austere was an order of trade posted below by someone else. It could be that one of the Summoner NPCs at a given time holds the prize. Trade at the right time to the correct corrisponding NPC = Gift.

- We don't know what these do yet - Last year, there were moogles that showed up later then when the actual birds showed up (this is usually the case for most events). They introduced the card quest in which Goblins would be searching (on chocobo) for "Overturned Soil", which held a special card burried under the ground.

The Moogle would give you a set of cards to collect, bringing them back and stopping the goblins from getting them would earn you a reward.. that's where the "Holiday scarves" that gave chocobo stable warps came into play. It's possible that the "new years gifts" will serve a similar purpose, though we will not know that until a moogle shows up >_<

Apparently the only known facts about this at this time are that it gives the effect of "Fishing imagery" for the duration of one hour.

- Kodamatsu (bamboo) Decorations are in the starting nations! No moogles yet, or this "summoner"

- Reports say Fenrir has been sighted in Qufim, I OP'd and am scouting now!

- Fenrir sighted in Valkrum Dunes! Being chased by several NPCs

- Fortuitous Fenrir confirmed (all fenrir NPCs have the same name?) in Zitah

- "New years gift" can be obtained.

I saw a "Fortuitous Fenrir" running around Eastern Altepa desert with 3-4 taru summoners following him. This was on Ramuh server if that matters :satisfied

was running through Zi'tah and see Fortuitous Fenrir being chased by 3 npc smns, tried trading stuff to fenrir nothing but when i traded to the smns i was giving buff (Protect, Shell, Enthunder and shock spikes were all i got) but apart from that i've not figured anything else out

Saw the Fortuitious Fenrir and three Summoners run by while leveling NPC in Xarcabard.. but no moogles around the usual spots in the Windurst/Sarutabaruta areas. I'm under the impression that these traveling NPCs are the same as the animals in the years past, that really do absolutely nothing, but is just a nice little tidbit referring to the Japanese yearly cycle.

Along with the actual event coming later... perhaps tomorrow?

ive seen fenrir stop a few times now. my guess is, you need to talk to this "Summoner" in town, then pick a zone and lead him to fenrir and you get something from the summoner.

That's possible. It could also have to do with "holiday/event fame" like the Dream Hat+1 quest did last year (Starlight festival). Or that only one of the three summoner's following him is the summoner, and it randomly switches every now and then.. trade to the right summoner at the right time, get an item~

These are all just theories, naturally.

There are 3 SMNs behind each fenrir.. One in Full AF w/ AF staff. One in Full Relic with relic staff (Not fully upgraded.) The other one is in full Asture with the staff that gives +64MP. Kinda neat to see.

saw him and the summoners running around in qufim, might be like 2 years ago with the monkeys, you trade them something and you get a fire cracker

I traded earth crystals to all 3 tarutaru and i got protect shell and shock spikes, and when i traded to the last one(in austere) he gave me a Rare/ex "New Years Gift" which was consumable, I used it and it did nothing though.


The one in Austere is also using an Archalaeus's pole it looks like, not himmel stock.

I tried trading the NPCs in E. Altepa Desert, traded an item (I think it was a moblin mask) to the one in AF2, and got the gift, used it and recieved a fairly long 'Fishing Imagry' support buff (~5 min). Tried trading gift to other summoners and the fenrir running around the zone with no luck.

They also don't seem to give another gift after you've got one in that zone.

I'v got gifts 4 times in E.Sarutabuta... 3/4 have given Fishing Imagery...I havent used the 4th yet. Maybe fishing is part of the event this year...?

Btw: I traded G.Bird Plumes and got a gift every time, I think its based on how many and the worth of the item... Cause it took me 2 stacks of earth crystals and other misc items to get the first, then got the other 3 each time I traded a bird Plume.v
