Just because a man didn't have the best gear available doesn't mean he's not good, it just means he didn't kiss ass, and didn't leave friends to flock to the next LS who could get him those things, but when it came to things that were easily reachable like being the first person on your server with full blu mage AF when it came out, while people were running around crying about how they couldn't get the silk threads and cried for patches, and partying with blu mages who were amazed when I used magic spells that they were to lazy to get.... yeah, I think I played the job well, pretty damn well, to be in a party without a red mage, and still get chain 400's holding my own with samurai's and other DD's back when we were frowned upon like we were brats who couldn't function without a refresh.... yeah i think I did aight....

I'm sorry to say this, but there is more to being "good" than "playing the job well" and getting high chains on colibri. This is something only achieved by getting high/top tier gear. Same can be said for all jobs. At any rate, BLU in part was not "respected" because they were less efficient when it comes to merit PTs or endgame content. The top tiered BLU could be bested by above average geared SAM, WAR, DRG etc-- which is why I find it hard to believe you kept up with anyone and more rather rode the coat tails of a party to a high exp chain (something that's not very awesome in the first place).

First with full Blue Mage AF? Get serious, that's no accomplishment to be proud of then, and it isn't now. You actually remind me of my self... I was feeling elitist over stupid shit like that as well, lol.

With all that being said, you can gear yourself to top gear status extremely easy these days-- you can defeat Proto-Omega with as little as 3-4 people now, so Homam (only feet and hands are useful as of right now, before this upcoming update) should not be a tough hurdle to over come. The rest of the Abyssea gear is extremely easy to obtain, now that "!!" triggering has been decoded. All minor sets in between are a joke to obtain now as well. The only thing of relative difficulty to obtain anymore is Tizona, to which is because of a lack of Alexandrite supply.

Zazaza, haven't posted in forever, so I'll post in the fashion of Pro earlier. Got every piece of Abyssea gear imaginable for BLU sans Mavi Neck/Earring (lol). No level 90 Almace. (not worth the stone waste yet) Still no Fort Torque. (lolol) That about covers it.
