About Me
Not going to get personal detailed, so I'll just write a summary of my life as a gamer.
Started playing games however long ago the Sega Genesis was. My grandmother threw it out.
Console after that was the Nintendo 64 when I hit about, 3rd or 4th grade, maybe. My grandmother threw it out along with my Sega Genesis.
I have the original Gameboy, Gameboy color, and Gameboy Advance. I never bothered with Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Advance SP, or any Nintendo DSs. All long gone, somewhere.
Probably at around this time, in Junior High School, I was really into Counter Strike, and Starcraft: Brood Wars. I was okay at Counter Strike at the time, and was pretty good with Starcraft: Brood Wars. By this time, I only started coming up with a Gamer name for myself through Trial and Error. In other words, if the name and myself was good enough or not. Too much to factor into good enough, so I'll just leave it at that. The name that stuck with me the longest was 5pid3rm4n, a messed up way to spell Spiderman. Influenced by my sister's ex-boyfriend while they were still together because their friends called him Batman.
I got a Nintendo Gamecube after that, still in Junior High School, along with the Gameboy Player attachment. I loved playing Super Smash Brothers Melee casually with my cousins. I thought I was pretty badass, kicking their butts. It got stolen by my sister's ex-boyfriend.
I'm not exactly sure when I got a Playstation 2, so I'll just fit it in right here. Playstation 2 was rather, very fun. Had good games. Modded the PS2 so I got a ton of burnt games to play. I still have my Playstation 2 til this day. I actually got a few Playstation 2s with me right now, thought I rarely play them with our current generation consoles.
I started Final Fantasy XI as a Freshmen in High School. I wanted to come up with a good name for Final Fantasy XI. Just finishing Kingdom Hearts 1 at the time, I had a lot of fighting beating Sephiroth's butt. Online, there were discussions or guides, that debated on what Sephiroth said during one of his attacks. One, being "Heartless Angel", which I really liked. So I decided that would be my name. I was a little weaboo back then, I guess, I tried to find a Japanese translation for Heartless Angel, but failed. Since there doesn't seem to be a japanese meaning for what the english word "Heartless" would imply. Which I liked, "Absent of the Heart organ" and "Cold, emotionless". I found, Hakujou no Tenshi, but I hated how that sounded. Not as cool as Sephiroth's One-Winged Angel translation, "Katayoku no Tenshi". I especially hate the "no" in between the first word and Tenshi. I eventually I found and decided on "Shugotenshi", which means Guardian Angel. Sounds neat, just unfortunate it's almost complete opposite of Heartless, and it doesn't have "No" in between. So from then on, even in Counter Strike, I used the name Shugotenshi. Unfortunately, Starcraft died for me by this time.
I got myself a first generation PSP when it first came out, no games whatsoever for the PSP at the time. It got stolen/lost when I left it in the back seat of one of my friend's car. What a fucking bitch, seriously. There was nothing I could do about it.
I went to a Console Arcade at Anime Expo at Long Beach in 2007 and decided to play Super Smash Brothers Melee, thinking I'd completely destroy them like I did with my casual cousins. I was wrong, these are real competitive players, and I was highly disappointed. I swore from then on, I'll definitely become competitive in Super Smash Brothers and kick lots of butt! Too bad my Gamecube got stolen, so I just brushed it off.
My father bought a modded XBOX, that came with all those games installed. It was fun for a while. XBOX really doesn't have that great games at all. The only game I ever really played often on it was Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball. I was rather surprised the Gameplay for Volleyball was rather fun. The game wasn't just all fan service.
So for the next few years, since my Gamecube was stolen, I've pretty much the only platform I played on was the PC, because of Final Fantasy XI and Counter Strike:(Source). Final Fantasy XI ruined my High School life, no joke.
I moved to Texas to make up for my High School years. I'm still playing Final Fantasy XI at this point, unfortunately. Wasting money and time, you know, the good stuff. By this time, I got pretty tired of the name "Shugotenshi", and since I'm Vietnamese, I rather not have a Japanese nickname, being Asian, it feels wrong. So, I went back and attempted to find a translation for Heartless Angel, this time, in Vietnamese. Once again, no success. It's difficult to get the same two meanings for 1 word in another language. So, I just asked for the translation for Angel. I got my new name, Thiên thần, but to make it easier to type in english. Thien Than.
My father bought a PS3 for me when it first came out, even though I didn't want that shit cause it didn't have any games at the time. So I was rather salty at the time since I wanted a Nintendo Wii for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Beggers can't be choosers, so I just looked into some PS3 stuff and set up my Playstation Network account. Having a new name now, I set my Playstation ID as ThienThan. Feel free to add me.
I got my Nintendo Wii. Had a blast with Twilight Princess, and once Super Smash Brothers Brawl came out, I rocked it out with people from Final Fantasy XI who were interested in it as well. As you read earlier, I was going to get competitive with this game, and I did. I joined a few Super Smash Brothers Brawl Community Website, and learned Match-Ups against other characters by playing against other players using Nintendo Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, I am still new to Texas, so I haven't been able to find a Brawl scene just yet. So all my Brawl skill and experience comes from Online Play. I main Ike, an incredibly low tier character, that means he sucks compared to the rest of the cast. I was told that I was a Semi-Pro Ike, so I guess I feel rather accomplished. I'm still using the name Shugotenshi, so if you just so happen to see my name pop up on any forums and whatnot, it's me. I decided Shugotenshi will be my public name, whereas Thien Than will be my private name.
A few or several months after I picked up my copy of Super Smash Brothers Brawl. I quit Final Fantasy XI. With the continued releases of expansions, and the lack of Ballista updates. Final Fantasy XI had died, and has no place for me to waste money on. Paying money to chat with friends is nice and all, but that is what Instant Messengers, Emails, and whatnot are for. Spending years to collect items for the sole purpose of collecting more items that takes years to obtain is utterly pointless. Sure, I need items to complete Story related Quests and Missions, but those you get done and over with, then what's the point of the items then? To help your friends with the quest, sure. Your linkshell members? Sure. But that's not a very exciting motivation, I say. Ever since I had my first taste of Ballista back when I first hit level 30. Every item from that point on that I went out of my way to obtain was for Ballista. It wasn't until maybe I had four level 75 jobs that I actually was trying to get items for Merit Parties, which explains certain items of mine, such as Byakko Haidate, and Sickle Scythe. Sure, Byakko Haidate is a good item, but I play Samurai, and I should have Strength legs, and I can't equip Byakko Haidate on my Dark Knight. My two main Ballista jobs. My point being, if we all would like to spend time together chatting, we should just use Skype, or whatnot, and if there isn't much Ballista, the only fun mechanic of Final Fantasy XI, then screw this game. Competitiveness in Ballista is a hell lot more fun and satisfying than being Competitive with wasting hours and years in camping monsters and lotting/bidding against other players. That's why the item distribution system on Final Fantasy XI is fail, it allows players to get screwed over in the work and effort they put into that relies on the help of other players. Every player should have their own treasure pool just like White Knight Chronicles and the Monster Hunter series.
After hanging around the Online Brawl Communities, one of few friends on Final Fantasy I was able to stay in contact with suggested this 2D Fighter game, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger for the PS3 and 360, to me, a genre I am completely new to, competitively, at least. I guess you could call Super Smash Brothers a 2D fighter, but it just wouldn't sound right even if you did. I never liked playing 2D Fighters when I was younger, because I always saw these "Directional Inputs" for "Specials", and I never understand wtf that shyt was, and I was never able to do it. So I've ALWAYS hated playing 2D fighters, except for Giggles and Laughs, aka Mashing the hell out of the controller and see who wins. So my friend showed me videos and pictures of the game, I thought it was pretty badass, and I was right too, when I got it. It came out maybe a year or so after Brawl came out, I pre-ordered it and everything. This game was just too hype. It had awesome characters, awesome music, awesome story mode, awesome design, graphics, EVERYTHING! There shouldn't be a reason why you wouldn't like this game. Then there ARE haters from other game communities. For example, Street Fighter and Guilty Gear, since BlazBlue is made newbie friendly, in other words, easier enough to the point where it could attract players who are new to the 2D Fight games, like myself. So if you have been playing Final Fantasy XI for the past several years and haven't touched a 2D Fighter, I highly suggest for you to pick up the new BlazBlue now out on the Playstation 3 and XBOX360, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. It's only at $40, a real good deal for an awesome game.
I guess you could call me Semi-Pro at BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger as well, once again, I since it's rather new, I wasn't able to find a BlazBlue scene in Texas, so I was left with learning matchup experience online. Luckily, I joined a few BlazBlue Community Websites for that. It helped a lot. Though, unfortunately, the sequel came out exactly a year later, so now I'd have to brush up on the new matchups they have in store for me. I went to Anime Expo in 2010, and spent a majority of my free time in the Console Arcade room, where they had BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger going. I had to say, I was very satisfied with my hard work and dedication to this game. I was destroying opponents one after another for a couple hours before the scheduled events I had planned out for Anime Expo. Not to mention, I even won a BlazBlue Ladder that earned me cold hard cash. Putting effort in a Fighting Game really pays off, compared to Final Fantasy XI. You work at a fighting game, you get your just rewards. You work at Final Fantasy XI, you lose time and money, at least you gain few friends who actually stays in connect with you, right? Not to mention constantly being screwed over by other players. Still no Kirin Osode up to the point when I quit.
My friend who got me to play BlazBlue betrayed me and decided to play on XBOX360, where we wouldn't be able to play each other. So I plan on buying an XBOX360 so I can play against him, since he is pretty against buying a Playstation 3. Unfortunately, my Playstation 3 broke down from an incredibly rough Air Flight back to California for Anime Expo, so now I have to save up money for both consoles.
I got my hands on a Hacked PSP, so that and the PC is all I have left now for entertainment. Unfortunately, no games at the moment to keep myself busy with.
